Booking through Thursday

"I saw that National Library week is coming up in April, and that led to some questions. How often do you use your public library and how do you use it? Has the coffeehouse/bookstore replaced the library? Did you go to the library as a child? Do you have any particular memories of the library? Do you like sleek, modern, active libraries or the older, darker, quiet, cozy libraries?"

I love the library, and I am sure to go once a week, and of course I have been known to go more. I go in, have a look around, and borrows something. Other times I go in looking for something particular in mind. But mostly I just like to see where my steps take me. Not so often I visit my "old library". That is mostly in the summer, or if we happen to be in the area. I am actually planning to go there soon because there is this book I want. And then there is the library that is actually closest to me, but it's smaller than the main one so I don't go that often. Only if I am going in that direction.

Sure I love the book store, and if I am in town I go in, but mostly to look and get ideas what to borrow from the library. I don't buy that many books in the end.

As a child I loved the library. Every Thursday I was happy because we went to the school library. Every Monday the library bus aka bookmobile, came to school and I always ran to it. Every Tuesday the library bus came again, this time on it's round around all the villages. And of course I was there again. I still go if I happen to visit my parents on that day. And the driver sure knows me. A trip to the big library was always exciting, and I loved the place. It was so big and white. And the rows of books went on forever. It is still my fav library and if I dream about a library I dream of that one. I was very happy when I began high school because the school is located near the library.

My first time to the library in town came when I was something between 16 and 18. And I loved it, so many books I hadn't read. Then they moved it to another building, but no, this library gets to hot in the summer.

When I was young I often had dreams of the library, that I found a book, and when I went there for real I found the book. I loved to find a book I had been looking for, I got really happy. I always have warm feelings from the library. Like when I first crossed over to the grown up side, so many books! I even dreamed in the nights that I got married in a library, my friends were very amused by that.

I love all libraries so they can come in all shapes and sizes, and looks. iI's the books I am there for.

  2. library bus??? wow...that must be exciting. And yes, you are a library kind of girl. We don't have that many great libraries in my city, hence I tend to prefer bookstores. Also, the fact that I like to collect books doesn't help much :)

  3. I think libraries are great as they give you so much choice, I think they help you to find books that you may have missed when they first came out as well.

Violetcrush, oh yes library bus, I always loved it. Sure not as many books as the real library but sure plenty enough. They are everywhere here.

Dot, I agree, they do give you a lot of choices, and there are so many books that I didn't know about. But here you can find them

  7. It wonderful to see a reader who have the love for library as much as other do. While I may not visit my libary often, it always wonderful that the library are being in good use for people who rely on them for books. I don't think I ever seen a library bus before but that must be interesting thing!

Happy BTTs to you, I wish you a good Thursday!

  11. Most of my books I buy at the bookstore, but I do go to the library almost every week. I get DVDs and audio books from them. Those are too expensive to buy.

  12. Hey Blodeuedd:

Great post! I too inhabited my local library growing up. I loved it there, browsing, reading, studying, just being there. :)

I took my kids there all the time when they were little as well.

I don't go much anymore, because of time constraints and I don't find it as well stocked as in the old days. I think you are quite correct. People tend to gravitate toward the book store/coffee houses now so there is a whole shift in interest.

    Best Regards
    L

  16. Gautami, for living in such a small town I guess I am lucky :) we do have libraries everywhere, dunno how Finns became so fond of reading, lol.

Yvonne, I really should start looking at DVDs and audiobooks too. I am so enchanted with books that I never notice them.

Lea, how fun it was to grow up in the library :D That is what my childhood was made of. I do hope they always will be there for people who want them

  17. Kathy, lol, I do the same thing. After a trip into town I usually swing by the library since it's on the way home and check if they have the books I just saw.

Beth F, what would I do without the bookmobile as a kid. I just went out to the road :D

Janet, I do have the fondest memories :D The librarybus stopped in several places in every village so people didn't have to go far. Once I came home with 30 books...my mum was rather shocked ;)

  25. I love our public library. I got there at least 2 times a week. The one closest to my house is a library connection meaning all the books, CDs, and movies cannot be placed on hold. You never know what you'll find.
I remember going to the library as a child and carefully selecting my week's worth of books.

  26. What a great post. I loved hearing about your library bus coming to your school-that's so neat. I've always lived near a library although the one in my neighborhood is small; it's still the one I frequent all the time. I still go often, sometimes once a week or every couple of weeks. I love to just hang around and browse the shelves.

  27. Linda, interesting to hear about the library connection :)
It's always so nice going in, not knowing what you will find

Dar, thanks :) I will always remember my childhood through books.
Even if I have browsed thos shelves a hundred times, I still always find it new and interesting

  28. Wow... I thought I loved going to the library! I wonder if your library bus and my bookmobile were the same. Did yours have books on it? or did it take you to the library?

  29. I was such a magnet to libraries when I was young. I still remembered that sensation of getting my library card---that felt so privileged and special!

  30. Thekoolairmum, no it must be the same. First now i remember hearing about bookmobile, but mine was just a staright translation. It was filled with books :D

  31. Hi Blodeuedd!

I grew up in libraries, it was my mom's policy that Saturday was library day and we each had to pick up a couple of books to read for the next week.

I still love libraries today, and visit our library all the time. I donate books because the library here is so small and funds are limited.

    Loved your post!!

    Dottie :)

  32. Libraries are the best places, though they seem to be sadly neglected nowadays. Here is my answer. Cheers!

  33. Thanks Dottie :)
Library day sounds like a very fun day, and good of you to donate books. I never thought about that but it would be a good way to spread the love.

Kat, thanks for stopping by, and yes sadly they are neglected these days :(
