Today I taking part in the Elven Lords Blogger Hop and I am hosting the realm of Verdanthame. Author Katryne Kennedy has picked a few excerpts to show what this part of England looks like in her Elven Lord series. Get know this Elven realm, and take part in the contest for a chance to win all the books.
Ruled by seven dangerously powerful Elven Lords, who use the Kind as a pawn in their wars and games, the rebellion of humans and half-breeds (half elven, half human) have joined forces and risked their lives to try to defeat the treacherous rule the Elven Lords have over their homes. In each book in this series—The Fire Lord’s Lover, The Lady of the Storm and The Lord of Illusion—brave men and women sacrifice almost everything for the rebellion… but they also fall in love along the way!

Verdanthame
The sovereignty of Mi’cal of the green scepter, who transforms plants and trees into beautiful creations with often-deadly intent. His throne is a stump of tree carved with depictions of hunting scenes, and the great hall’s pillars are tree trunks. Vines sway from the high ceiling, white moss flowing down from them like scarves of delicate lace. The court dresses in browns and greens, blending with the plants that grow from the walls and edges of the rooms. The palace itself is perched within an enormous tree, the walls of stone so covered with green moss that it appears to be some odd growth of the tree itself.
Excerpts featuring Verdanthame, from the Elven Lords Series by Kathryne Kennedy:
The land:
“Now, if we were entering a forest in the sovereignty of Verdanthame, that would be another adventure! The elven lord of the green scepter has twisted and shaped his woods beyond human imagining.”
***
The eastern sovereignty, where Mi’cal ruled with his green scepter, sported tracks of barely impenetrable forests with a wealth of plants that defied description.
***
From their vantage point, he could tell that Breden’s water magic struck at both Firehame and Verdanthame from the sea on the south and east. Waves jetted in the air, a blue haze off in the distance. Verdanthame Palace lay too far away to see if it still withstood the siege, but Drystan could see a wall of seething green off to his left, an occasional crack of brown running through it as Annanor of Terrahame used her power of earth to break through Dorian’s verdant defenses. It appeared that the half-breed still managed to hold his territory against the elven lady.
The magic:
Dorian tried his green scepter, calling up hibernating roots from beneath the snow, weaving them together to form another wall behind the first two.
The dragons:
She had heard the dragons of the six other sovereignties had different powers associated with their elven lords: the black dragon of Firehame could breathe fire; the blue dragon of Dewhame, lightning; the green dragon of Verdanthame could breathe a mist that grew tangled briars and enormous trees. The silver dragon of Bladehame spat molten metal, the brown dragon of Terrahame emitted a roar that cracked the earth, and the violet dragon of Stonehame could turn anything to stone with his breath.

My favorite type of plant is the Japanese Maple Tree. I love how the leaves turn from red to green. Watching the leaves change colors feels like watching time move backwards.

Cheers!
Cottonwood trees. Yeah I know not very exotic or even flowery. But growing up we had these ancient giant cottonwood trees that lined our (very long) driveway on the farm. Every spring when they would let loose the cotton seeds it looked like it was snowing puffy little clouds. So to me these huge trees are strong silent watchers, that also get to be pretty once a year. =)
ReplyDeleteVerdanthame sounds beautiful too, all that greenery. Makes me think of Kauai.

My favorite is the River Birch tree. I love the flaky bark! We have one by our deck. Love it!

My favorite is the rose. I can't help it. The best are the ones that smell. I love to take the petals and put them in my bath water. It makes me smell good and softens the skin. I don't care what color the rose; I still love them!
ReplyDeleteI like trees. The are nice to look at, they provide shade and it's nice to sit under one and enjoy a good book!
ReplyDeleteI love orchids, all varieties. For a while, I kept killing them but now I know not to over water them!
ReplyDeleteThanks,

Good morning, Blodeuedd! Thank you so much for having me here today, and for being a part of the Elven Hop.
ReplyDeleteHi xiaopanda! I'm not familiar with that tree, so I will have to google it to see what it looks like...it sounds so pretty!
Hi Shellie! I think the gardenia has the most gorgeous smell, and they are so beautiful...they are on the top of my list as well!
Hi Lexi! We have a lot of cottonwood trees here in Arizona. The leaves flutter and seem to sparkle in the slightest breeze. And they rustle a lovely sound. I understand your choice perfectly!
Hi Diana! I expected to hear about lots of flowers today, so it's refreshing to hear about some trees as well. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Renee! My fav flower is a rose, and I'm partial to pink. I look for them in everything I buy, from my mouse pad to clothing. I'm surrounded by bouquets. :} Here's a lovely pic: http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-1704891/stock-photo-bright-pink-roses.html
Hi Carol! What a lovely way to spend the day. :}
I love Cherry Blossom trees. And anything Lilac.
ReplyDeleteYou've created such beautiful and creative worlds Kathryne.

I like willow trees

My favorite type of plant is a Bird of Paradise. They're lovely plants and their flowers are so unusual - they really do look like birds to me.
ReplyDeleteBarbed1951 at aol dot com
I always loved the small tiny wild roses. I know that they aren't large or that fragrant, but I just love them. My absolute favorites are the little yellow ones with pink and red tips.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the small, tiny wild roses. Pink, red, yellow - especially when I get all those in one small package. My mom has always loved the giant fragrant ones, but the tiny ones are just so appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteDo I REALLY have to choose just one favorite plant? My dining room looks like a forrest & I keep adding more plants from the Phila. (PA) Flower show each year.
ReplyDeleteIf I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY have to choose one plant as a favorite I'd have to choose a weeping peach tree. They aren't seen too often because they aren't disease resistant & take a bit of care. I've had one in my backyard for 14 years now & it still is an eyecatcher (Shocking pink flowers on weeping branches).
Mindy :)

I really don't know if I have a favorite - there are so many to choose from (like picking which one of your worlds I like best :) I will say an orange blossum bush for smell or maybe the honeysuckle and weeping willows call to me for some reason and who can resist a rose...oh, I could go on and on lol. So looking forward to The Lord of Illusion!

The flower gardenia is my favorite the wonderful smell and the greenery all year.

Great giveaway!! I LOVE daffodils - they are so sunny and bright after a dreary, white winter. I love that they pop up so early and make me so happy.
ReplyDeletedanakburgess@gmail.com
Hi Booklover! Orchids are hard to grow, but then again, I always forget to water my plants and they die. I've got a few hardy cacti that have made it. :}
ReplyDeleteHi Carol! What a lovely compliment, thank you! Cherry blossom & lilac, what wonderful scents!
Hi Jennifer! I have a scene with willow trees in Enchanting the Beast...there's a willow fairy in the branches. :}
Hi Barbara! It's so wonderful to be reminded of all the gorgeous flowers in the world. I had forgotten about Bird of Paradise, and you're right, it is fantastic.
Hi Alyssa! I love anything miniature...tiny pink roses are twice as special. :}
Hi Mindy! Wow, I'd love to see your dining room, and that special tree. I'd love to see it as well.
Hi Catslady! So great to hear from you again! It is hard to pick a favorite, I know. :}
Hi Theresa! The gardenia does have magnificent, dark green leaves. A beautiful contrast against the white petals, and I think I've already mentioned that their perfume is over the moon!
I'm loving all the answers, ladies!
Hi Dana! I just missed ya! Great description of a daffodil, they are a happy, sunny flower!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice having you over again Kathryne :)

My favorite flower is actually a bush, the lilac bush. I just love the smell of lilacs and they are purple. So they fit in my color scheme.
ReplyDeleteluvfuzzzeeefaces at yahoo dot com
My favorite plant/flower is Lilac. It reminds me of my belated grandmother. She always had a lilac bush in front of her door. I always had to stop and smell them. She's been dead for thirteen years now and I always associate them with her.
ReplyDeleteRaonaid at gmail dot com
Hi again Melissa! My pleasure! And we have good timing. :}
ReplyDeleteHi Jean! I'm not familiar with the plant, but it sounds lovely. Good to hear from you again!
Hi Julianne! I agree, lilacs are gorgeous and smell even better. :}
Hi Raonaid! What a beautiful reason to love a plant. Thank you for the touching and poignant comment.
I'm hearing from many familiar readers today. Thank you all for following the tour...you have made it so fun and interesting for me!
I really like Cherry Blossom trees (sakuras), some how they look so peaceful and when the petals fall off it seems magical (like pale pink snow). I also like irises and tulips.
ReplyDeletepams00 at aol.com
My favorite flower is the rose and my
ReplyDeletefavorite plant is the pecan tree. I
greatly prize the climbing "old rose"
bush, grown from a cutting, given to
me by my late grandmother. Also as dear to me is the pecan tree grown from a tiny tree, an offshoot from my late father's one and only pecan tree. I thought we had lost the tree, during
Hurricane Ike, to a tornado. I stood
at a window and watched as the branches
on the trees in the backyard twisted
and turned in fierce winds. It was
daylight before we could see that the tree still stood.
My favorite plant is the hibiscus flower. It has become a trademark for me almost. So many of my favorite clothes have it on them. My favorite earrings are hibiscus and my favorite colors are the bright tropical ones.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway and sharing your imagination with us!

I also love trees and in fact have 2 in my yard that are about 11 years old that I grew from seeds, theyre maple trees I grew from "helicopter" seed pods. I love most all plants and trees tho, I have always loved nature :-D

ReplyDeletecarolsnotebook at yahoo dot com
Well, I'm from Ohio, the Buckeye State, so the Buckeye tree is my favorite tree!! I can't wait to read these books because the foliage sounds beautiful!!
ReplyDeletejwitt33 at live dot com
What a great giveaway! Oh my fave flowers are lavender roses and pansies. I also love Aspens even though they aren't true trees. :)
ReplyDeleteI adore plants - without them, none of the myriad types of animal life on this planet would be able to exist.
ReplyDeleteOne particular species? Ayahuasca, the Shaman's gateway to higher consciousness and enlightenment to the nonordinary realities that surround us all the time. Plants are great teachers about how to live in harmony with all other life on this planet. We would do much better to heed their wisdom. Ayahuasca, originating in South American rainforests, is one of the great instructors.
Kathryne - I love your writing because it is so in tune with the magical dimensions that make life so worth living!
Peace and so much thanks!
