Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.
January 29th: What things turn you off in a book blurb (courtesy of Roberta@ Offbeat YA)
I really do not know. I read, I pass, I read, I want. What makes it so?
Well, last night I was looking at book and I only saw the word reverse harem in the book and was all nope!
Caught between two boys, ugh, YA, must you?!
If the main character sounds too evil, stupid, silly. If I want to hit someone in the blurb then that is way too early.
If the blurb tells you nothing.
If it is boring.
Wow this was hard!

It was a hard one this week.
ReplyDeleteYes it was
Deleteyeah reverse harem is not something that attracts me
ReplyDeleteI see so many of them and no thank you
DeleteThat's a hard question. Reverse harem has been a nope for me too. And I usually stay away from sports related stories too.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at amazon freebies yesterday but saw too many harems and gave up
DeleteI adore your descriptions sometimes Blodeuedd :)
ReplyDeleteSomethings that are a real turn off are, blurbs that don't describe the book and all and covers that don't match the book
Though those you do not know before having started the book and yes then they annoy me

DeleteHaHa. Loved your answer. Made me laugh. “If you want to hit someone reading the blurb.”
ReplyDeleteHaha, well I have been there so ;)
Deletelol yup that sums it up :D
ReplyDeleteI admit, I'm a sucker for those "____ meets ____" blurbs, but when any of them are comparing to Game of Thrones or Harry Potter, I just know they won't deliver...because when do they ever? GoT and HP are like in a league of their own and they always will be :D
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
Good one! Yes those annoy me, most often two books that are nothing alike and then this book is supposed to be like both. And yes often I liked one and hated the other
DeleteI tend to pass on anything that sounds like it might have a love triangle or nothing but sex.
ReplyDeletePass on those
DeleteYes, definitely when I spot a trope, like your reverse harem, that I don't like most of the time (love triangles and secret babies, are the big ones) or when I don't care for the way the characters are even in the blurb. Skip!
ReplyDeleteUgh secret babies. They make me mad. TELL THE DAD!
DeleteReverse harem, I'm a nope on that one too. And love triangles! Why must YA include an inordinate amount?! Nope there as well.
ReplyDeleteI have no freaking idea!
DeleteI'm so with you on the reverse harem thing, a hard pass from me. Hmm, what else in blurbs turns me off. Usually it's something that is too far fetched/implausible/doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteToo far fetched, well it depends on genre for me :)
DeleteTrue. Surprisingly, or maybe not consider in my fave reads are SFF, it's the stretch or poor character description that contemporary romances or contemporary thrillers do. Like having a top performing lawyer at a firm, the one everyone loves and looks up to, having to achieve some weird goal to be considered for the new partner spot. If the lawyer was really the golden child of the company wouldn't they already be the first in line?
DeleteFor me it's "coming of age." And I hate love triangles, YA or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYes those can be tough
DeleteThere are certain tropes. I'm not a huge friends to lovers fan. I've read several reverse harem stories, some I like, some I didn't. I'm not a huge fan of YA, and it can't take place in a school setting. I don't know why, but I've never liked a single book set in a school.
ReplyDeleteMelanie @ Hot Listens & Books of My Heart
Lol, ok no schools for you! I can take those in audio, then it works for me
DeleteI actually skip blurbs almost always. I find that they can either misleading or give away spoilers. I read them only if I don't know the author/book. But even then, I look more at genre than blurb.
ReplyDeleteSOme blurbs do tell a LOT
