Audio: How Rory Thorne destroyed the multiverse

By: K. Eason

Unabridged Audiobook

In exchange for an honest review

Space, ruled by different people, isn't that how it always is. Rory is a princess, 13 fairies show up to give her gifts (why hadn't fairies been seen for 500 years? And that means fairies where from earth?)

Anyway, her dad is assassinated, her brother is a little d*ck. She is sent to marry a prince, cos alliances are always needed.

I would have liked to learn more about the universe, the aliens? I know nothing about them. And more about these different worlds and where they were. But it was still an interesting concept.

I liked Rory, she was not tough or kick-ass, she was just normal and can see through BS thanks to gifts/curses.

And then she wrecks the multiverse, just as the title says. It ends and it feels like an ending, but it seems more is to come, which is weird, cos it really felt like an ending.

Good book, YA, but never felt YA (which that I mean no triangle, no angst, no bs ;) Wait, is it even YA? Cos it sure did not feel adult either so I will call it YA.

Narration
Good narrator. I have listened to her before. Though at times she did loose who was talking, but for most of the time there were distinct voices

Rory Thorne is a princess with 13 fairy blessings, the most important of which is to see through flattery and platitudes. As the eldest daughter, she always imagined she'd inherit her father's throne and govern the interplanetary Thorne Consortium.

Then, her father is assassinated, her mother gives birth to a son, and Rory is betrothed to the prince of a distant world.

When Rory arrives in her new home, she uncovers a treacherous plot to unseat her newly betrothed and usurp his throne. An unscrupulous minister has conspired to name himself Regent to the minor (and somewhat foolish) prince. With only her wits and a small team of allies, Rory must outmaneuver the Regent and rescue the prince.

Ravencry by Ed McDonald

Paperback, 384 pages
Published June 28th 2018 by Orion
Series: Raven's Mark #2
Fantasy
own

I have been having a bit of reader's block. I have wanted to read, but at the same time not. Not even with this good book. But tonight I buckled down and got it done!

Better make it short and start a new book while I have my groove back.

Ryhalt is a captain at the edge of a crappy place. He lost someone he cared for in the last book, and that person seems to be a ghost around town.

The city is going to hell.

His boss is on his case.

This is a grey, shitty place. I like it. Things happen here and well, I do fear for him in the next book. Nice series.

Four years have passed since Nall’s Engine drove the Deep Kings back across the Misery, but as they hurl fire from the sky, darker forces plots against the republic.

A new power is rising: a ghost in the light known only as the Bright Lady manifests in visions across the city, and the cult that worship her grasp for power even as the city burns around them.

When Crowfoot’s arcane vault is breached, an object of terrible power is stolen, and Galharrow and his Blackwings must once find out which of Valengrad’s enemies is responsible before they have a chance to use it.

To save Valengrad, Galharrow, Nenn and Tnota must venture to a darker, more twisted and more dangerous place than any they’ve walked before: the very heart of the Misery.

Joint Discussion: Marked in Flesh

Hello all! Carole and I will be discussing "Marked in Flesh" by Anne Bishop. I am in red and Carole in blue.

Author: Anne Bishop
Marked in Flesh (The Others, #4)
Narrator: Alexandra Harris

Title: Marked in Flesh
(The Others #4)
Genre: Paranormal, UF, Fantasy, & romance
Published: March 8th 2016
Pages: Audiobook

Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…

Omg, this was INTENSE! And I have read it before!

I do think this was the MOST intense of them all so far!

I liked this one the best, and knowing book 5 (which is still good), but this one is the best one. So intense. So OMG
I am curious about the next one. I just want everyone to be happy...except for the poopy humans. There are SOME good humans...but the rest are poopy and frankly...deserve all the bad things.

Humans are so poopy, damn those poopy meat sticks! Even that guy that was saved that said  make that animal shut up. I was all, throw him out!
Me too!!! I was hoping more would happen...I wanted more chaos. But that is the blood lust in me! Haha

The bloodlust sure hit a high in me this time. Even when they went too far I was all, well “we learned from you”. Damn, that is bonechilling.
I don’t think they went too far. I wanted more! After everything the humans did...smh...but yes. That was epic and bonechilling. If humans don’t learn from THIS then I don’t know what else to do for them

Humans are stupid as rocks. They never learn. Mass extinction is a must, you need to cull that herd more.

I agree. Save only the good ones. Any who did not obviously stand up and support the others need to go.

The rest just do not deserve it. Too many bad ones survived. Humans never learn. Sigh. Ok so yes humans bad. And the others, I love them, and I kept hoping for a miracle at one point, sobs

Love the others. I am liking Meg and Simon more and more. I wish we got to see more of them. I feel like the side characters took over the POV a little bit.

There is a point to it, book 7 will be about Bennett. But it was weird, cos book 6 is about some place else,

Weird. BUT I am curious.

They are good, they were the first one I did in audio with this series and LOVE. But there are bad humans there too. Stupid humans.
Mhmmm. We shall see! I do for sure wanna listen to the next one. What can possibly go wrong next? LOL. Don’t get me wrong I adore our side characters, but I feel like I’ve really hooked to Meg. I don’t 100% like her. She annoys me with a lot of her decisions, but I like her and understand her. Especially more in this one.

I did not like her when I read them either, but this time around when I listened I seemed to catch more things and I understand her. I can forgive her choices now, but I guess it takes two times, lol. And I freaking Love love Simon. And the rest!

I think I really got to understand her more when we seen more of her kind like Hope. I feel for her. It is an addiction.

Yes, Hope did a lot. I am lost for words once again, this was just so intense, I could not put it down even though I have read it before. I listened to 1 am once and I was all, MUST STOP, but I did not want to.

SO hard to review good books sometimes hahaha. This was an addicting listen. The narrator is amazing as per normal. This one was the boiling point and all chaos is about to hit the fan. Not sure when...so I was so anxious the whole time. I just wanted everyone I love to be okay. I felt SOOOO bad for that one character (no spoilers). I wanted to cry!

Same, I was so sad. So much happened, and I could not remember the exact times so I was on the edge of my seat. Alexadra Harris is amazing. I really want to listen to her in something else (even though she had only one other?) I want more by her.

Me too! Me too! She is good especially with ALL those characters running around. Each one had their own voice. Rough and tough for sure. Kuddos to her!

I can not say much about this one, other than INTENSE. Shit hits the fan like you said. Best one so far. It got a 5 out of me and Harris did that last push to 5 for sure.
Dang! A 5 from you! That is rare ;) I agree though. 5 on both accounts. Everything has lead to this. So intense. So emotional. You will sit on the edge of your seat.
You have to listen to this! If you have not, then what are you waiting for?! The end of the world? Just do it. The series it done. 5 books. Do it! And 2 more sequels just for fun

I do regret waiting so long. So good. I encourage the audio versions. But the book version will do fine.

Psawh, the books got nothing on this ;) I checked and it seems I have given 5 5s this year and Bishop has 3 of those, lol.

WOAH! I can’t remember but I think I gave the last one a 5 too. I know the first one I gave it low because I didn’t care for the book version. LOL audio is the way to go.

Onwards! One more to go to see what happens to Meg and the world

Can’t wait! Onwards march!

In exchange for an honest review

I liked this one even better than book 1! I do enjoy when that happens.

The world is great. I am not going to explain it. Space, rich houses, a war going on. Just a really interesting world building that you need to read about.

Biance is a member of a High House. She was married to an asshat (that is kind, he was an evil inventor). She is a great hacker and uses her talents for good. I liked everything about her, and what a shitty time she had had!

She must find her brother. The sexy chief of security is on her tail to bring her back. Her House is at war.

Action, lots and lots of it. The romance is slow building and has been for years. I did like that they took it easy, I mean she is on the run, he is running too, there are baddies left and right. Who has time to stop for that then.

Narration
Emily Woo Zeller is great and does an amazing job with Bianca and the rest. I like her style and voice. She fits very well in a futuristic world.

The narration does well with non stop action and builds the tension.  A great listen

As the dutiful daughter of High House von Hasenberg, Bianca set aside her personal feelings and agreed to a political match arranged by her family, only to end up trapped in a loveless, miserable marriage. When her husband unexpectedly dies, Bianca vows never to wed again. Newly independent, she secretly uses her wealth and influence to save other women stuck in dire circumstances. Information is power and Bianca has a network of allies and spies that would be the envy of the 'verse-if anyone knew about it.

When her family's House is mysteriously attacked, Bianca's oldest brother, the heir to House von Hasenberg, disappears. Fearful for her brother's life, the headstrong Bianca defies her father and leaves Earth to save him. Ian Bishop, the director of House von Hasenberg security-and Bianca's first love-is ordered to find and retrieve the rebellious woman.

Ian is the last man Bianca wants to see. To evade capture, she leads him on a merry chase across the universe. But when their paths finally collide, she knows she must persuade him to help her. Bianca will do anything to save her sibling, even if it means spending time alone on a small ship with the handsome, infuriating man who once broke her heart.

As the search takes them deep into rival House Rockhurst territory, Bianca must decide if she can trust Ian with the one piece of information that could destroy her completely . . .

A ghostly gift and Accidental Leigh

ebook, 56 pages
Published February 15th 2015 by Angie Fox
Series: Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries #1.5
Cozy paranormal mystery
Own

No problem jumping right into this with this novella. It worked great. I wanted something short and that I got.

Verity can see ghosts thanks to the ghost that stays with her.  They have a case to solve, and so they do.

Good little novella, and it made me curious about her ex and why she is seeing his brother. That sounds like quite the story.

Verity Long doesn't want to see ghosts, and she'd rather not let anyone know her little secret, either. But when a restless spirit stirs up trouble in her friend's resale shop, Verity and her very new, very dead gangster friend team up to learn what is really happening. They discover an age-old secret and must learn the truth behind a mysterious disappearance... before it's too late.

How does a girl become a witch? By accident, of course!

Leigh Epstein is a grief stricken and lonely elementary school teacher that is devastated by the brutal and unexpected death of her true love at the hands of a careless writer. She overcomes her grief by taking matters in her own hands and takes up a little romance writing to resurrect her vampire-werewolf book-boyfriend. Leigh gets more than she bargained for when she discovers that every steamy erotic scene she creates is magically reenacted by her family, friends and coworkers.

In her hilarious first diary, Leigh unwittingly sets her parents up for a weekend dinner party that they will never forget. She has two weeks to find out what her new found magic is capable of. Can she prevent a wild erotic encounter that could devastate her sweet parent’s marriage? What and who else will get caught up in her magic spells?

A bit of brainless fun. Ha, I enjoyed it.

Leigh gets a magical desk and writes hot sex scenes, but then they come true! And everything turns out wrong. Ha, yes it was pretty amusing.

It was a novella, I can roll with that and that is why I chose it. Short is good. I'd read more

PS. This is as close I will get to horror this October

Carole's Monday Review: The Christmas Eve Secret by Elyse Douglas

The Christmas Eve Secret - A Time Travel Novel: (Book 3) The Christmas Eve Series
Author:  Elyse Douglas
Title: The Christmas Eve Secret (Book 3)
Genre: SciFi, Romance, Historical, Mystery
Pages: ebook
Published: September 16th, 2019
Where I Got It: My shelf (given to me by the author/publisher for my honest and unbiased opinion)

Despite their happiness, Eve is having premonitions that something dreadful is about to occur. Concerned about the future and the safety of their child, she insists that they destroy the time travel lantern. Patrick is more cautious.

One afternoon when Patrick is out, a sinister man breaks into the apartment and forces Eve to give him the lantern. In many ways, Eve is relieved the lantern is gone. She hopes they can now live a more normal life.

A day later, Patrick shadows a woman who has been staking out the Gantly’s brownstone apartment, and he confronts her. To his and Eve’s utter shock, they learn that Lucy Rose is from 1924 and that she time-traveled with the man who took the lantern. He returned to 1924, but she chose to stay behind. She offers to sell the lantern back to Eve and Patrick, and they reluctantly agree, hoping to keep it out of unscrupulous hands.

Convinced that the lantern is a threat to their future happiness, Eve and Patrick decide to destroy it.

But the lantern has more power than they could have ever imagined. Once the lantern is destroyed, Eve’s life is completely changed. She must set off on an adventure, in a struggle that will return her to the past, where she will learn the secret of the lantern’s origin and delve into the farthest reaches of her heart.

Book 3! So exciting! I really enjoyed the last one quite a bit!

The story continues with Eve and Patrick. Despite everything seeming to be perfect, Even cannot brush off this fear and premonition something bad is on the horizon. In order to protect her and Patrick and their unborn baby, they decided to destroy the time travel lantern once and for all. And of course....this does not end well.

Even though I wanted book 3 and more of their stories, I also didn't. I want Eve and Patrick to be happy!! They really deserve it! Time travel is not all rainbows and kittens. Even though it brought them together, it keeps messing things up.

I adore Eve and Patrick. I like Joni too even though I wanted to shake her sometimes! No one forced you to go woman!

OooOOOooo what to say without spoilers?

Honestly, I was hooked from page one. I think I liked this book better even though it ripped my heart out! Ugh! SOBS! So good, so good.

The middle dragged a touch there, but after some events, the ball got rolling again. I was so anxious and I wanted Eve and Patrick to be happy.

Oh, that ending! Melted my cold heart! I love it.

And that big reveal of how the lantern(s) got created??????? WOAH! I did not see that coming. Such a good twist! A fun twist! But made me want to shake somebody!

All-in-all, this was really good. I liked it just a touch more than the last one I think. The story was good and I loved the reveal! Didn't see that coming. The ending was good too! I for sure recommend this series. I'll stamp this one with 5 stars.

Well, this was boring. So very very boring. I ended up skimming.

The premise was so interesting. Chinese Lore inspired. People on a mountain and all are deaf.

What I got was the only Chinese thing was the names.
Fei was dull, her lover was dull.
The lead up was long
The climb took a page. I mean come on, no one else tried this?
The resolution was put together really quickly and was just stupid. Oh please. All these people should be dead.

It felt like a series put together into one book. Also one very boring book.

Though considering I have not liked anything else by the author then srsly, what was I expecting? ;)

For as long as Fei can remember, no one in her village has been able to hear. Rocky terrain and frequent avalanches make it impossible to leave the village, so Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink. Many go hungry. Fei and all the people she loves are plunged into crisis, with nothing to look forward to but darkness and starvation.

One girl hears a call to action…

Until one night, Fei is awoken by a searing noise. Sound becomes her weapon.

She sets out to uncover what’s happened to her and to fight the dangers threatening her village. A handsome miner with a revolutionary spirit accompanies Fei on her quest, bringing with him new risks and the possibility of romance. They embark on a majestic journey from the peak of their jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiguo, where a startling truth will change their lives forever…

Night and Silence by Seanan McGuire

I love these, but I also want them to end, I fear the day they will drag. I did like this one but at the same time it did feel like  a filler for the next book. I fear fillers...

Toby's daughter is missing, they are on the case.
Tybalt is still suffering after the ordeals in the last books.

You know what, book 12. They save the day. There are consequences. There is a big secret coming out.

I liked it, I always do.

Blurb
In the aftermath of Amandine's latest betrayal, October "Toby" Daye's fragile self-made family is on the verge of coming apart at the seams. Jazz can't sleep, Sylvester doesn't want to see her, and worst of all, Tybalt has withdrawn from her entirely, retreating into the Court of Cats as he tries to recover from his abduction. Toby is floundering, unable to help the people she loves most heal. She needs a distraction. She needs a quest.

What she doesn't need is the abduction of her estranged human daughter, Gillian. What she doesn't need is to be accused of kidnapping her own child by her ex-boyfriend and his new wife, who seems to be harboring secrets of her own. There's no question of whether she'll take the case. The only question is whether she's emotionally prepared to survive it.

Signs of Faerie's involvement are everywhere, and it's going to take all Toby's nerve and all her allies to get her through this web of old secrets, older hatreds, and new deceits. If she can't find Gillian before time runs out, her own child will pay the price.

Two questions remain: Who in Faerie remembered Gillian existed? And what do they stand to gain?

No matter how this ends, Toby's life will never be the same.

Historical romance
In exchange for an honest review

I am going to start in the middle, what an asshat her brother was!  Usually siblings are good, or aloof, but this was quite the asshat, and trust me asshat is just me saying it kindly. He need several kicks in his...

And back to the beginning, Georgiana is a nice, fun young lady, who is staying with a friend, when the friend's world comes crushing down.

Rob is your usual kind of rake, drinking and playing cards, and then he wins a house and sets out to claim it. I liked Rob, cos he was more than he was showing.

He is left for dead, she cares for him. To save him she pretends they are to be married. And he falls in love, awwww, I did like Rob. And Georgiana too, she was really  nice! And yes she was engaged to someone else, but fear not it works out! And in the end I even wanted that guy to find Miss Right too.

A nice romance that made me curious about the couples that came before.

Narration
A good narrator, and I think it might have been my first by her? But I would listen to her again. She did a good job with this romance and character realisation.

Georgiana Lucas despises the arrogant and cruel Marquess of Westmorland even before learning that he’s won the deed to her friend Kitty’s home in a card game. Still, Georgiana assures Kitty the marquess wouldn’t possibly come all the way to Derbyshire to throw them out - until he shows up, bloody and unconscious. Fearing that Kitty would rather see him die, Georgiana blurts out that he’s her fiancĂ©. She’ll nurse the hateful man back to health and make him vow to leave and never return. The man who wakes up, though, is nothing like the heartless rogue Georgiana thought she knew....

You have to risk it all

He wakes up with no memory of being assaulted - or of who he is. The bewitching beauty tending him so devotedly calls him Rob and claims she’s his fiancĂ©e even as she avoids his touch. Though he can’t remember how he won her hand, he’s now determined to win her heart. But as his memory returns and the truth is revealed, Rob must decide if the game is up - or if he’ll take a chance on a love that defies all odds.

Carole's Monday: Odell's Fall by Norman Bacal

Odell's FallAuthor:  Norman Bacal
Title: Odell's Fall
Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Romance
Pages: 352
Published: October 2nd 2019
Where I Got It: My shelf (given to me by the author/publisher for my honest and unbiased opinion)

Where do you go once you've clawed your way from obscurity to the pinnacle of success? When you've finally found the woman of your dreams. When the ethical rules guiding your life need to be broken in order to have her. When you've eloped to avoid the stigma of an inter-racial marriage among Alabama's elite. If you're Odell Moore, one of New York’s most successful lawyers, the entire world is watching your inevitable descent. And two New York detectives will be waiting to greet you in hell.

Love, jealousy, and deceit lead to murder in a penthouse apartment. But did Odell do it? Even he can’t be sure.

Othello has re-emerged in modern Manhattan. Will it end better for him and Desdemona this time?

Othello had been one of my favorite plays by William Shakespeare so when I read that this is pretty much a modern version, I could not help but give this a read.

The story follows Dee and Odell. The two fell in love right away and married quickly. Odell is extremely successful and rich and charming and Dee comes from a prestigious Alabama family. However, due to his race, they knew they wouldn't find acceptance so they eloped. They move to New York and things don't get better. Jealousy and deceit start plaguing them.

The beginning was a drag for me if I am to be frank here. Maybe we are supposed feel bored alongside Dee and Emily? They live lonely existences because their husbands, Odell and Jackson, are busy successful men and simply just want to work all day and all night. Booo! They are just the wives at home and we barely got to see Odell and Dee just be together and be in love. I think I was missing that bonding time with them to see the love.

However, after a certain event started unfolding at the store and then at the beach I was intrigued again and I knew it was beginning to happen. Iago...I mean Jackson...was beginning his insidious plan to ruin Odell's life. Ooooo that baddie. Always so bad!!!!

I was ABSOLUTELY hooked at this point. The intrigue and the drama. Ooooooo that father-in-law!!!!! I hated him. Horrible, horrible man.

I felt for Dee. She was just a dumb, rich girl who just wanted to be happy and in love.

Odell has a lot of issues and I felt for him. Poor guy! I also felt for his friend Michael.

Poor everyone! Except for our baddie and the father-in-law. Heck! I even felt for Emily. She was equally a victim.

The ending was awesome. TOTALLY didn't see that coming. I loved the detectives. The ending made me happy.

What else to say without giving away spoilers?? MMMmmmmmMMM

Yes, this was a good one. It was like the original play but with many different twists and turns and we got to see a lot more character development. The modern take was fun and done well. Kuddos to the author for not just copy-pasting this story. The author truly found a different way to tell this story and make it different. You don't at ALL have to read the original play. This was its own story.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was dragging there for a bit, but once the ball got rolling I was totally glued to the pages. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a good people story. I'll stamp this with 4 stars with a touch of romance and a bunch of mysteries.
