Carolyn Brown post and Giveaway

An Excerpt:

The Burnt Boot Bar and Grill was not exactly what Rhett expected. The parking lot was gravel, or at least it had been at one time. Now it was thinly distributed gravel on top of dirt with only one streetlamp to illuminate the whole place. The building was weathered wood that didn’t look as if it had ever seen a drop of paint applied. Hell, it might have even been petrified, as old as that sign swinging above the entrance. The roof was rusty sheet metal, and the only window in the place was the one in the door.
“Not what you thought it would be?” Sawyer asked when Rhett got out of his truck.
“Looks more like a barn than a bar,” he said.
“The inside is better—air-conditioning, jukebox, and even paint on the walls.” Jill laughed.
“I like the air-conditioned part best of all.” Rhett followed them inside.
The bar itself was only eight stools long and had a small area for grilling burgers and making fries behind it. There were no pool tables, which surprised Rhett. But not as much as the shelves holding loaves of bread, hot dog and hamburger buns, and a small assortment of prepackaged pastries, or the refrigerated section beside that, with milk, beer, wine, and soda pop behind sliding glass doors. The other end of the long, rectangular room sported a jukebox, a few mismatched tables with chairs around them, and a small area for dancing.
“After the store closes in the evening, folks can get milk and bread or beer in here,” Sawyer answered the unasked question.
“And I thought Comfort was a small town. I’m not sure this qualifies as a town.” Rhett chuckled.
Sawyer clamped a hand on his shoulder. “You’ll get used to it. Besides, you know what Grandpa says. To be a town, the place has to have a church and a place to buy beer or get a shot of whiskey. So by the O’Donnell qualifications, Burnt Boot passes the test.”
At nine o’clock, he’d filled a few pitchers of beer for folks who’d drifted in and out, and Sawyer had shown him the process of making burger baskets. Sparks danced around Jill and Sawyer every time they brushed against each other. It damn sure didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that their honeymoon wasn’t over.
Two lonesome, old cowboys sat in a back corner drinking beer and telling tall tales. The jukebox had gone quiet and Rhett had wiped down the bar so often that it was shiny clean. If every night was like that, he’d have to bring some rope to make a bridle or something to keep himself from dying of complete boredom.
“Why don’t y’all go on home? I can handle it for the next couple of hours,” Rhett said.
“If you’re sure, we won’t argue.” Jill removed her apron and hung it on a nail.
Sawyer didn’t waste a bit of time hanging his apron right beside hers. “We damn sure won’t. Can’t remember the last time we got to go home before midnight. Sweep up and put the chairs on the tables. We don’t do mopping unless there’s major spills. Here’s the keys. Be sure to turn off the grill and the lights.”
“Will do.” Rhett rolled the sleeves of his white T-shirt and wiped down the bar one more time.
Jill and Sawyer were gone less than five minutes when the door flew open and suddenly the bar was crowded to capacity. Someone plugged money into the jukebox, and in seconds it was going full blast, playing “Boys ’Round Here” by Blake Shelton. Folks wasted no time getting out onto the dance floor and making a long line to do a line dance. The noise level went from zero to one hundred so quick that it took a while for Rhett’s ears to adjust.
“Hey, Rhett, we need three pitchers of beer and about six red cups,” Kinsey yelled from the end of the bar.
He quickly filled the pitchers, set them on the bar, and stacked up six plastic cups. Kinsey handed him a bill and he made change.
“And when you finish that, I need two longneck bottles of Coors,” Betsy said from the other end of the bar.
It kept him hopping, keeping the beer orders filled, the money straight, and making a few pitchers of margaritas. Then there was a lull, and there she was, sitting on a bar stool, her light green eyes watching him. His heart threw in an extra beat and his chest tightened.
“Well, hello, did you just fall from heaven?” he asked.
“I’ll have a double shot of Jack on the rocks, so the answer is no. I don’t think angels drink whiskey, but it is a fine line,” she answered.
“So you are a Tennessee whiskey lady?” he asked.
“Tonight I am,” she said.

Magic shifts - Ilona Andrews

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her Mate, former Beast Lord Curran Lennart, have broken with Pack, but Curran misses challenges of leading, so he grabs when Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild. As a veteran merc, Kate can take over Guild’s unfinished jobs, not knowing they are connected. An old enemy has arisen.

My thoughts:
I wanted to read the PB, so I waited, all while everyone else read this one so much earlier. But I need my fix in print ;)

They are out of the Keep. I kind of miss the Keep now. But they are both happier and that is all that matters.
The Guild is going to hell.
Strange things eating cats.
A missing buffalo.
And something else hunting in the city.

Seriously when you get to 8 you go all eh, I have said it all. Though I must confess, I am crushing on evil EVIL Roland. He is just so evil you know. But then there was an even more evil thing, gods he is evil

So...everyone is kickass. Not a lot happened. It was a good book, but not as awesome as those in the early days. Or maybe that is just me wanting an ending, cos when it get to these many books I always fear that they will start to drag. I worry ok.

But...good book :)

Last first kiss and Shopaholic to the rescue

Pinterest Perfect. Or so Annie Carson’s life appears on her popular blog. Reality is... messier. Especially when it lands her back in one-cow town, Brightwater, California, and back in the path of the gorgeous six-foot-four reason she left. Sawyer Kane may fill out those wranglers, but she won’t be distracted from her task. Annie just needs the summer to spruce up and sell her family’s farm so she and her young son can start a new life in the big city. Simple, easy, perfect.

Sawyer has always regretted letting the first girl he loved slip away. He won’t make the same mistake twice, but can he convince beautiful, wary Annie to trust her heart again when she’s been given every reason not to? And as a single kiss turns to so much more, can Annie give up her idea of perfect for a forever that’s blissfully real.

My thoughts:
I do like small town romances, but this small town showed its ugly face too. I would not have gone back, those people were idiots! Except for people who were new in town. The old ones judged her for her parents, on how she was home schooled, on how she was a weirdo then. Judging much!? Idiots who have never took a step outside of town *mutters*

Annie is a mummy blogger who comes back to sell the farm. With her is her kid. She is having a blogger burnout, a troll is after her and she wants more.

Sawyer is from the neighboring farm and they had a thing that went down in flames. Oh and his grandma is a cruel witch.

But Sawyer wants Annie, and does sweet things for her. He does the chasing, she does the hiding. I liked how he did not give up and told people to piss off. But I do hope the town changes cos asshats!

Cute.

Becky’s biggest ever challenge takes her to Las Vegas and beyond in a fast-paced, fun-filled, road-
trip adventure. Becky’s gone too far in the past - but now she's putting things right. She’s determined to track down her missing dad, help her best friend Suze, bond with her worst enemy Alicia Bitch Long-legs (maybe...) and work out how to play blackjack.

As she discovers quite how much her friends and family need help, she comes up with a brilliant plan. Becky is going to rescue everyone. But can she rescue herself?

My thoughts:
Yes I enjoyed it this time. Yes I went on and on in the last one that Becky's problems are not funny, but, damn, I missed it in this one!

See Becky had come to realise that shipping is bad. But that made Becky not Becky! And everyone else in the book started to see it too. Without shopping she was a grey blob, so I found myself wishing she would shop a bit...in moderation!!!!! Cos she is still likely to go overboard and that poor kid will grow up like her. BUT, she was dull. Sigh. Yes the shopaholic needs to be a shopaholic.

In this one the drama is SO unnecessary. If they all would just talk to each other then this whole Vegas thing would not have happened. Silly people.

Still it was fun, but I wish this series would end because the books are starting to be fillers.

Dragon Hunters - Marc Turner

The sequel to When the Heavens Fall features gritty characters, deadly magic, and meddlesome gods

Once a year on Dragon Day the fabled Dragon Gate is raised to let a sea dragon pass from the Southern Wastes into the Sabian Sea. There, it will be hunted by the Storm Lords, a fellowship of powerful water-mages who rule an empire called the Storm Isles. Alas, this year someone forgot to tell the dragon which is the hunter and which the hunted.

Emira Imerle Polivar is coming to the end of her tenure as leader of the Storm Lords. She has no intention of standing down graciously. She instructs an order of priests called the Chameleons to infiltrate a citadel housing the mechanism that controls the Dragon Gate to prevent the gate from being lowered after it has been raised on Dragon Day. Imerle hopes the dozens of dragons thus unleashed on the Sabian Sea will eliminate her rivals while she launches an attack on the Storm Lord capital, Olaire, to secure her grip on power.

But Imerle is not the only one intent on destroying the Storm Lord dynasty. As the Storm Lords assemble in Olaire in answer to a mysterious summons, they become the targets of assassins working for an unknown enemy. When Imerle initiates her coup, that enemy makes use of the chaos created to show its hand.

My thoughts:
When I first started this book I had totally forgot about the whole standalone thing I had heard, and I panicked. But later research showed me that this book yes takes place in the same world, but not in the same location, and not with the same characters. So it was indeed a standalone, and I started to read.

How to explain it then...it takes place during a short period of time. There are many players and conspiracies, all twisted around. I did feel I was thrown in too fast, it did work out, but you know the feeling of suddenly just being there, knowing no one, just following along.

There once was a league ruled by those with magic and the rest paying levies so that the ships could sail without being eaten by dragons. A gate was created and once a year they celebrate with letting a dragon in and killing it.

First we have the ruler, the one with magic, the one pulling strings.
Then there is the good soldier trying to track down whoever is killing folks with magic.
Then there is the priestess sent on a mission to sabotage the great hunt.
The guardian also trying to keep someone alive.
The merchant daughter whose father is loosing power.
All coming together on this Great Hunt. Trying to escape assassins, magic and dragons.

Then all hell breaks loose.

Oh and who are the weird ones? I can't not say more than that...spoilers, but that made me go all whaaat. I wanna know more that. Nothing is said about book 3, but I guess new location, new people, and the world will burn?

So yes some issues with the beginning since the players were just there. But at the end I already wondered about book 3. That is always a good sign.
