My Thoughts
Sometimes you just know from the start, that this will be fantastic! He had me worried there for a second, it was all up to Thomas and what decision he made. And he so made the right one and I knew that this is a character I want to root for. Yes, he might be a gangster, but at least he is a gangster with some good qualities too and I love that. I am tired of all the dark and grey ones. Ok, so yes he kills people, but hey they deserve it, most of them.

The book was light, ok, no, I did not mean it was light in tone. People are killed, blown up, decapitated, I mean that the writing was light in spirit. It was one of those were the pages truly flew by. I would have finished it in a day, but I did want some sleep too when I know there is a monster that might wake me.

I am rambling. I always do when I really like a book.

I always liked mafia movies. And Thomas might call himself a businessman, but he knows it well that he is a gangster. He took care of his streets and his people. But then the war came and now the city tired and hungry. And he has to begin from the beginning again. Smash a few heads together, take over a few things and do right by his people. He knew that he could rule by respect and not hate. And the things he do, I knew I liked him from the get go.

What would I call it then? I mean the only fantasy is that there is talk of magic and then we see some, but that is it. It is more a city book you know, the streets, gangster stuff. Dark deeds. Spies and something is rotten in the City of Ellinberg.

Great side characters too! Bloody Anne. His brother Jochan who seems crazy. Billy the Boy.

It's great! Read it! What more can I say? This is what I love to read.  It is the best fantasy book I have read so far this year. It really got to me.

Conclusion:
Fantastic start to a new series. I am dying right now to read more, MORE I tell you.
Do yourself a favor and read it! Let yourself be entertained. Brilliant!

Blurb:
It's a dangerous thing, to choose the lesser of two evils.

The war is over, and army priest Tomas Piety finally heads home with Lieutenant Bloody Anne at his side. When he arrives in the Stink, Tomas finds that his empire of crime has been stolen from him while at war. With his gang of Pious Men, Tomas will do whatever it takes to reclaim his businesses. But when he finds himself dragged into a web of political intrigue once again, and is forced to work in secret for the sinister Queen's Men, everything gets more complicated.

When loyalties stretch to the breaking point and violence only leads to violence, when people have run out of food, and hope, and places to hide, do not be surprised if they have also run out of mercy. As the Pious Men fight shadowy foreign infiltrators in the backstreet taverns and gambling dens of Tomas's old life it becomes clear; the war is not over.

It is only just beginning.
