Review: The Royal Scam - Gini Koch

Series; The Martian Alliance #1
Genre: Sci-fi
Pages: 15-ish, ebook
Published: October 1, 2011
Publisher: Musa Publishing
Source: For review

Join the crew of the Hummingbird as they take on the rich, famous and sleazy of the galaxy. They're also on a long-term secret mission, so it's a good thing they're the best con artists, spacers, and roughnecks in the Milky Way, because they need all their skills to pull off this particular Royal Scam.

My thoughts:
Honestly I can't say much since it was really short. But I will try my best.

I would not say it was much like her other series about Kitty. No, the tone was different and the laughter, fun and sexiness was not here. It was just more sci-fi, which is a good thing.

The crew are con artist, and what their big con is in the end we do not get to know. But we learn what the smaller con is and it surprises me. I did like that. As for the crew, there are humans, not so human like beings, shapeshifters,, just your regular sci.fi crew really.

Even if the writing was good, for me the novella was just too short. It was like I rushed in and then out again. Still for Koch fans it is a must.

I also found myself more interested in another storyline that will not be looked at. Too bad cos the Princess one could be interesting.

Rating:
Too short for me

Cover.
Nope

  3. Only 15 pages? That is really short and I never feel like I get time to settle in before I'm kicked out of the story again. It does have an intriguing premise though!

  4. 15 pages...that makes me sad. I was excited to see a sci-fi book up.

  5. I'm wondering what the big "Scam" is since its never mentioned but I guess that would ruin the story for us.

  10. Sometimes you just want to get stuck in and the journey is over too quickly! Still it might expand my science-fiction reading! :)

Thanks, it sure was not easy

I know, it is just over way too fast. I want to settle too.

    Charlie

I know, short is evil sometimes

    Dana
Well, you could read it in 10 minutes you know

    Aurian

    I hope so too :)

    Mel
I sure do not get to read a lot of sci-fi either so it was fun at least

  15. 15 pages? Really? What can you say in that amount of time? Then again, I've had to write within that many pages for my term papers and I know how hard it is to fill up white space with words. LOL

  16. That really is short. Hm... might be a good place to start for a longer story though.

  17. The cover is just blah...and scifi not being my thing I could handle only 15 pages!! LOL!

  18. Oh, I might try this one some time. I'm liking the short stories and have not read any of Gini's books. Thanks for the review on this short read.

  19. I've read a few really short books lately and they just don't do it for me. One book I downloaded to my Nook was only 7 pages. That hardly even qualifies as a book.

  20. You don't even get to know about the big scam? That's too short alright.

  21. Nick Cave (Craven is a nick I gave him) and his song:

I hope it clears things up ;)

I have 5 pages to write this weekend and even that will be hard to fill ;)

    Melissa
The thing is that I wanted a longer story of another story within there

    Staci
    Sadly so very very blah

    Melissa
Try it :) But I do prefer her Kitty katt books much more

    Yvonne
7 pages is...yes, not even a story in the end

    Steph
It is book 1 so it will come I guess

    Thanks Ana!

    Nina
That it is, I do need more to fall in love

    DC
Well then it would be perfect

    Jennifer

  26. I like short stories, as long as that's all they're trying to be. I'm a little confused though, since they have a Big Scam to pull off, but you don't get to know about it. Sounds like the start of a bigger story.

  27. I do enjoy sci fi. Too bad this was rushed.

  28. It being too short, do you think it will still be interesting to readers who hasn't read the series at all, like me...

  29. Carol
I guess that there will be more short ones...I guess

    Naida
It was not rushed exactly, I just need more

    Cherry
This is something entirely new. Nothing to do with the other series

    Roro, it is

  30. 15 pages. So this is like a short story. Wow, but it does sound intersting. I think I'm going to check it out...at least 15 pages isn't going to ruin my life if I don't like it much. Plus you have it as #1 maybe this is a teaser and the next book will be a novella or novel.
