Libriomancer - Jim C Hines

Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically reach into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that leaked from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.

With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic. . . .

My thoughts:
The premise was so good. This guy being part of a secret society that can use magic when it comes to books. You can just pull out something famous from a book, like....*thinking* What do I want from a book? Like a crown! Something you know ;)

But...sighs, yes cool premise.
But I never really liked Isaac. He was flaky. Nope, I never did like him.
Then there was Lena...no. I tried my best to make the best of that situation, but nothing about it was right.

So, bad guys are fighting, vampires are fighting, oh whatever. I tried my best, it had a few good parts. But sadly, it was only ok.

Conclusion:
Not really something I would recommend.

  6. This one got better after the first one for me. I wasn't in love with it, but I did like it enough to continue. The characters really rounded out I think (if I remember) more in the second book.

  7. I really enjoyed the concept, but I seem to recall the magic was a bit of a mess and it was like the character made it up as he went along. I'd still like to continue the series though, but it's been years.

  8. Oh, boo. This book looks exactly like the kind of thing you like to read, though! That sucks.

  9. I don't know that there is much worse (in the book world) than seeing a book with a great premise, but doesn't turn out well. Sorry this one didn't work out.

  10. Bummer! It did sound great when I read the blurb. But I get it. Sometimes characters just aren't appealing even if the plot is great.

  13. Oh that's bad when you don't like the characters. A good premise with bad characters is not one for me either! Sorry you didn't like it :)

  14. I can like a book if I don't like the characters, but it has to be a strong plot.
