Tell me something Tuesday: May 30th: How do you handle the DNF books?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

This week's conversation starter:
May 30th: How do you handle the DNF books?

Before it was hard, I finished so many crappy books. Books that sucked, books that were badly written. Books that made me throw them at the wall. But I felt this need to finish them. After a while I started skimming, then I just read the end of the book. And then finally I reached that stage where I just said F it! I am not going to spend my time reading bad books, I am not going to spend time at those I do not care about when the library has a million books I want to read. And more coming all the time. Before I get to those old ones the library will have given them away to make room for new ones.

So yes, these days I start a book and if it does not impress me I dnf it. And I am fine with it. There is too little time in the world to spend reading books I do not care about (not to mention I have 2000 freebies or so from amazon =_=). I Dnf like there is no tomorrow. I do not have a limit of pages read, sometimes I know from page 1, sometimes it takes a bit longer.

But sometimes I fall back into those old habits and read a book that I give a 1. ugh, why did I even bother!? And sometimes I still read those just ok books and feel all why? This was not good. Why did not not read a good book instead? But it's hard to let go sometimes, especially if it's a book by an author you like.

Mostly though, I am all, too many books, too little time.

  1. I try to live by "Life is too short to read bad books" motto, so if a book is driving me crazy or is badly written, I dnf.

  2. I generally DNF too if it's not working, although like you sometimes I stick it out. And then wonder later why??? lol but yeah there's so many books. And isn't it funny how sometimes you just know on page one?

  3. I rarely DNF but it's happened a few times recently. I will sometimes revisit it on a later date to see if I was just in a mood or not.

  4. I struggle so much with this but am getting better. I have to really hate something to give up under 50 pgs - and then once I've read more I feel guilty stopping. I'm trying hard to make the most of my reading time by reading what I love only.

    1. I know, it's hard. If I read too much then I just continue and then I want to kick myself

  5. I bow to your DNF skills lol

I'm a skimmer when I don't like something. If there's even one character I'm interested in I suffer through. But I power skim and finish the book in under 20 minutes lol

  6. I can understand why you backed away there. Some books are just not right for the time

  7. I go into each book expecting to enjoy it. I don't dnf too often but I do allow myself to do it when I am not enjoying it. I usually only dnf a handful of books every years.

  8. I'm stuck at the point where I still can't bring myself to DNF. I don't know if I'll ever move past it, but I know I could be saving so much time if I did!

  9. It has been a slow evolution for me from three years ago when I never DNF'd a book until now when its gotten to three DNFs a month at times. I try a little harder for review commitments, but even then, I will not push to finish what isn't doing it for me. Lots of books on the shelf still waiting for me just like you. :)

    1. I do try harder with those but when it comes to library books or books I have gotten on my own like freebies, good riddance

  11. I don't hesitate to DNF a book, but there are some cases I finish and it's like a one or two star rating for me and I want to kick myself for continuing! Life is really too short to waste on a book that isn't working. Great post! :)

  12. Haha, I followed your path too but now I don't finish if I'm hating it. Even a review book, I just say to the publisher what put me off. Life is too short and so many books waiting as you point out.

  13. It was quite complicated before as well and I wanted to finish everything now I can accept to DNF a novel but I don't do it that much, sometimes I keep hope that it will improve lol

  14. You're my hero for DNFs. Usually if I'm a few pages into a book that I don't like I'll email the publisher and let them know. I just won't read it.

  15. When I first started the blog I forced myself to read all the books I got. Now, if it doesn't grab me within the first couple of chapters I call it quits. There's just too many books to waste my time on something I'm not enjoying.

  16. I've DNF several books, but only ever one that I requested for review. I'm like you, there are too many good books to waste time on bad ones. It is hard when it is an author you love, though.

    1. I am pickier with review books so that is a reason why there are fewer, I guess

  17. I love your DNF posts (especially when Luci coughs them up like hairballs!). I don't have a lot of DNFs mostly because I tend to only pick up books that I want to read. I don't get many Amazon Freebies, etc. I hardly ever enter contests anymore. But if I do pick up something for review and I don't want to finish it, I won't. And I'll write a review explaining why.

    1. Hehe. I have had fewer now I am afraid. Since I do not read as much

I really should stop with those amazon freebies

  18. You are good at DNFing. I don't mind DNFing but don't have them TOO often. Maybe every other month.
