TMST: Book Tours

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

March 12th: To Tour or Not to Tour? Do you participate in book tours? Why or why not?

I took a little tsmt holiday, my mind was blank! But now I am back :)

It depends. I would happily, and is happily, apart of book tours if they give me something.

I do not do book tours that give me a cover release
An excerpt only
A spotlight.

You can see the picture. I will take part with a review, a guest post or something like that. I want real content, not just something that 10 other bloggers have.

  1. I rarely do book tours anymore but will sometimes do one for a publisher or an author. I don't do them for tour companies that make money for my work.

    1. Oh you are right there! I do give them a chance sometimes, but I often get burned

  3. I am with you on the spotlight, excerpt thing. I will only vouch for what I've read or will read. I only do tours for books I want to read anyway or an author I enjoy reading.

    1. Sometimes I can give one a go for the fun of it, but they need to give me something extra to publish

  4. I used to do a few of them but I don't anymore.

    1. I think it would be fine if they got things to me in time. And still, eh, I want original and not the same as 10 others

    1. I got burned out, you know, them sending it the day before, but it was too late since I am ahead and had gone to bed. So then I was supposed to fix that in the morning, no way

    2. Yeah I stopped dealing with a few tours who did that but if you like mystery/thrillers etc PIC tours is a good one-http://www.partnersincrimetours.net/

  8. I used to do a ton of book tours. Now, I will only do tours when I want to review the book. I feel the same way you do about wanting original content.

    1. Review is fine, if I can do it my way :)

  9. I don't mind book tours, but these days I'm so busy that the only feature I can't really commit to are interviews. I am also cool with writing a review as part of a tour, as long as my content won't be dictated by anyone else (I've heard horror stories where a blogger has been asked to edit their review from the tour company, which is just not cool).

    1. Ugh, no. My way or the highway! I still remember when the author got pissed cos I gave her a 3 and went after me. I never heard from the tour company again either

  10. Yes, I require original content as well when we agree to a tour even if the original part is my review. We do less of them as a result, but sometimes less is better. :)

  11. Yes, totally agree, I don’t do the blitz, spotlights whatever posts, those are nothing but ads to me. You did forget though the pressure to like the book and write a positive review, that makes it hard.

    1. Right! I did not think of that! Maybe cos I do so few ;) But yes it is one thing with a publisher but with those tours the pressure is on

  12. Agreed. I don't want to post the same thing as everyone else.

  13. I tend not to tour unless it's for an author I adore. Wait, I take that back... I have done a few tours with one publisher... oh well.
