TMST

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

May 5th: Goodreads reviews: do your round your ratings up or down? Do you think it matters? (Courtesy of Roberta@ Offbeat YA)

Like if a book is good I round it up to great? Nope.

To be honest I hate rating cos everyone looks at them differently. And sometimes it is so hard to put a rating on it. But I do not make it better, though at times when I feel the narration is better than the actual book...ok that is a tough one.

I will just say no, also ratings are evil

  1. it's true that we don't all mean the same with the ratings

  2. I will round up or down if I think a book deserves a 3.5 or 4.5.

  3. I hate ratings too it's why I don't rate the books i review on my blog and only do so on sites that require it. Thanks for sharing xo stay safe

  4. I wish Goodreads did halves!

  5. I do the same, round up if it was good and down if not.

  6. I think the way my rating skews really depends on the book. I do think the rating system in general is very objective, so it is hard to say that it is a true representation of a book's worth.

    1. It really is objective, some think a 3 is good, some thinks a 3 sucks. How can we then rate the same way

    2. I default to stating my own opinions of the book and letting the reader decide for themselves.

I've seen other bloggers describe what each star ratings mean.

  7. "ratings are evil" ha. I don't really do ratings per se either, although for myself I give it a number of stars just so I remember two years later or whenever I look back if i liked it or not. I probably rounded down in a pinch.

    1. I do give them on GR and sometimes when I look back I am still all what? So sometimes I might give a 4 to a 2 by mistake, ooops

  8. I sometimes round up and sometimes round down. I just go with my feelings. I agree that not everyone looks at ratings the same.

  9. It I think a book is 3 1/2 stars, sometimes I'll round up, and other times I'll round down. It depends on how the story made me feel as a whole.

  10. I agree when narrators raise a story it is difficult to rate it, and yes ratings are subjective but I guess that's okay really.

    1. I can't remember which book but the narrator was amazing! And the book so meh. So weird

  11. I think it definitely matters, because of the lack of half-stars like Goodreads' crappy system, lol. If it was a solidly enjoyable 3.5 I round up, but if it had a lot of issues, I round down.

    1. I do count on other peoples ratings ;) I hate them myself, but when I want a book I look at them

  12. And, this is why I like half stars. I don't have to hurt my head over rounding up or rounding down. LOL

When I rate on Goodreads, it is for my own benefit anyway just like the review (b/c I can't remember what I thought of the book five years later if I don't).

    1. Who can! I can barely remember what I read this year cos I read so much!

  13. I agree. I think the ratings are a quick glimpse, but the reviews themselves are what matters. We all rate differently, but I think your thoughts on the books you read are really what lets everyone know where you stand. :)

    1. Well said,a nd I agree. Sometimes I read a review and the person clearly didn't like the book and still it has a high rating

  14. that is a weird question for you because you don't rate books on your blog. I never thought about how that translates on GR.

    1. Haha, yes it does not work for me, I refuse to rate on my blog because people see the number and go all, ok never mind. It just happened to me on GR, this guy said he would skim the book, it was GOOD god damn it
