Carole´s Monday: Cupcakes, Trinkets and Other Deadly Magic

Author: Meghan Ciana Doidge
Title: Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic
Series: The Dowser #1
Genre: Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 266
Published: June 18, 2013
Where I got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Review:
Picked this up because I loved the cover and the title....and it just sounded like pure fun. Oh and free is always nice ;)

Here we follow Jade who owns her very own bakery. She loves baking and that is all she wants to do in life. However, she is dragged into the magical world....a world she has tried to avoid....and into a murder mystery.

Jade was a nice girl. I liked her a lot. She is sassy, but she has a deep avoidance issue so it was nice to see her dragged into things.

Sadly, I only liked Jade. Everyone else was kinda crappy. Sienna is selfish and manipulative. Her Gran is overly protective. Her mom is not even there. Rusty was eh. The wolves....eh. The vampires? Super eh. Maybe in book 2 I'll grow to like someone other than Jade.

This was campy, but fun. I did struggle because I didn't like anyone except Jade so it made it hard to appreciate more of the story lines.

Oh! I loved the Canadian setting! That was super different. With this genre, we are so often stuck in a big US city so it was nice to get a different local.

All-in-all, I did have some fun with this one. Jade was a delight and I loved the setting. Plus...cupcakes? Nommy. Not sure if I'll read forward though. Maybe...one day....we'll see.

I'll give this 3 stars. Bonus star for a fun local and an awesome cover.

Favorite Character(s): Jade
Least Favorite Character(s): Everyone else.

Audio: Laird of Misrule by Mary Wine

By: Mary Wine

Narrated by: Antony Ferguson

Series: The Enchanted Well, Book 1

Length: 6 hrs and 16 mins

Release date: 03-25-25

Publisher: Tantor Media

Categories: Historical romance

Recieved from tantor for a review

Wine sure does writing about bitchy women who tries to bully our heroine. It is not the first time.

I so disliked the lady of the manor. I wanted to slap her, sooo much. Ok backtrack.

Prudence is a puritan who ventures out to a Samhain fire. Her puritan dad would not like that. She meets a hot Scot and he helps her home. Because the party is getting wild and he is a gentleman.

In comes bitchy Lady of the Hay. Dugan is a bastard, and his father´s wife does not like that he is so respected. She fears for her own son. While Dugan does not really give an F about lairdship. So this horrid woman kidnaps Prudence and says it is for her own good because evil Dugan spoiled her and her family would have cast her out. Why you wonder, well the Scots hates the English and Prue is English so they will loose respect for Dugan when he has to marry her. Arghhh, it made me so mad! Prudence was so nice, Dugan was so nice. And many others were not.

But these two trust together will fall in love, and Prudence will show she is more than just a sweet girl.

I enjoyed it, and Anthony Ferguson is always a brilliant narrator. I like his Scottish accent and this is not my first Wine book by him. They are always fun to listen too.

Tonight, Dugan planned to make sure the little lass venturing out to peek at her future got what she was looking for.

One moonlit encounter. That was all it might ever be, and yet, Dugan discovered he craved more. Much more. At the end of the harvest, Samhain bonfires had been held under the moon for as long as anyone remembered. Were they sinful? Perhaps. But they were fun, and Dugan intended to give himself another chance to see the lass he’d encountered at the well.

Tonight though, he’d go so far as becoming the Laird of Misrule. The position came with a very pretty queen consort while the bonfire blazed.

Her mother warned her against indulging in impulses. But that didn’t stop Braylin from sneaking out to dance around the bonfire on the first night of Samhain. It was a chance to be free, if only for one stolen moment.

But fate has other ideas. Dugan is illegitimate, and his stepmother is determined to make sure he will never inherit the Hay lairdship. When the lady hears that Dugan has danced the night away with an English, a Puritan girl, it’s the perfect chance to ensure her own son inherits instead of Dugan. For if Lady Hay brings the English girl to Hay land, Dugan will have to wed her or see his honor tarnished.

Review:
This was on sale at Target and I had to have it. One, I've been meaning to read this and two, that cover? Ugh. Beautiful.

Sadly, I just could not get through this. I wish I could since I spent money on it. The characters are meh. The story just didn't grab me. The dialogue? Well....it was.....interesting.

All the parties!? I get it you're in college and you are young and hot and play sports. OKAY.

I want to try this again someday because I loooooooooooooooooove the cover so much. Sadly....at this point.....DNF.

...And a gorgeous park ranger is telling her that she’s his destiny (and also, camping illegally on royal land).

Before she knows it, she’s whisked off to a palace on the arm of a dragon shifter (!) prince and fitted for a crown...because she’s been chosen by an ancient magic spell to be the mate of the next king of Alaska.

As the youngest (and arguably most unsuitable) prince, Toren never thought that he would be tapped to rule, but he knows that Carina is worth the weight of his new duties. Now he’s just got to figure out how to be a king, and even more importantly, how to protect his queen-to-be from old enemies...and new foes who will stop at nothing to see Alaska fall.

Review:
A nice freebie on Amazon that sounded good. Plus...another pretty cover! Cute guy and I love what they did with the aurora borealis! Soooo coooooool!

Another one bites the dust. The story seemed fun enough, but I couldn't get past the writing style. It was so quick. So choppy. So......forced. Maybe if it was a short story I could be more forgiving.

Maybe I'll put this up for the DNF 2nd chance one day. I do have book 2!

Sadly....I am shutting this one down for now.

Carole´s Wednesday: Twin Passions

Author: Miriam Minger
Title: Twin Passions
Series: Captive Brides Book #1
Genre: Historical Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 406
Published: November 1, 1988
Where I got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
Anora finds her wedding plans suddenly shattered when she and her identical twin, tomboyish Gwendolyn, are kidnapped and taken aboard a Viking ship. While the handsome captain mistakes Gwendolyn for a boy and appoints her his servant, Anora captures his heart and he vows to have her. To preserve her sister's virtue, Gwendolyn initiates a dangerous game. Will the twins be rescued before Gwendolyn surrenders to her own passion?

Review:
This was a freebie on Amazon so why not?

Anora and Gwendolyn are kidnapped and taken aboard a Viking ship. While there the captain mistakes Gwendolyn for a boy and appoints her as his servant while he tries to capture the heart of Anora. Anora's heart belongs to another, so Gwendolyn will initiate a dangerous game. However, she can't help but be attracted to the dangerous Viking. Will rescue come before Gwendolyn loses her heart and surrenders to her own passion?

Bleh. Gah. I just could not get into this one. I doubt that Gwendolyn could keep the secret of her womanhood as long as she did. It's a small ship and the servants and soldiers would have noticed her. It's not a camp where she can skaddle off. Tight quarters and all.

Also, our captain was a bit too blood thirsty and too alpha-y for my liking. Don't get me twisted. I love a good man's man, blood-thirsty male (*fans self*) but it rubbed me the wrong way. This is an 80s HR so the vibe is different I think.

But yeah. Not for me, but I finished this because I wanted to see how it ended. Morbid curiosity? I'll admit I skimmed QUITE a bit during the middle bits to just get to the ending.

2 stars from me.

Sort of. I can´t remember where, maybe a forum about JR Ward? Anyway, I talked to someone, and she was Finnish too, and then we realised we studied at the same Uni, so we met up and became friends. But that is the only person I have ever met that was a Bookish or blogging buddy.

Nice and short

Audio: One things leads to a lover by Susanna Craig

By: Susanna Craig

Narrated by: Esther Wane

Series: Love and Let Spy Series, Book 2

Length: 9 hrs and 10 mins

Release date: 06-03-21

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

A random find, I wanted to listen to a historical romance. And this one looked so fun.

Amanda is a widow with 2 boys. Then she gets a hold of something and is pulled into a game of espionage.

Major Langley Stanhope is a spy and he needs to solve a certain problem. And then he meets the lovely Amanda and everything gets difficult.

They fall in lust, they fall in love. There is a hunt for something and danger.

Yes I read book 2 first, it works well in HR. But I am curious what kind of spying is going on in the other books.

Great narration too. I like her voice for make and females

Amanda Bartlett, widowed Countess of Kingston, is a woman beyond reproach. Married at nineteen, she dutifully provided the Earl with an heir and a spare before his death three years ago. Since then, Amanda has lived a simple, quiet life. A life that, if she were honest, has become more than a trifle dull. So when an adventure literally drops into her lap, in the shape of a mysterious book, she intends to make the most of it—especially if it brings her closer to a charismatic stranger...

Major Langley Stanhope, an intelligence officer and master mimic known as the Magpie, needs to retrieve the code book that has fallen into Amanda’s hands. The mistaken delivery has put them both in grave danger and in a desperate race to unearth a traitor. It’s also stirred an intense, reckless attraction. Langley believes the life he leads is not suitable for a delicate widow, but it seems he may have underestimated the lady’s daring...and the depths of their mutual desire.

Carole´s Review: In between spaces

Author: Rebecca Burke
Title: In Between Spaces
Genre: Anthology, Nonfiction, Short Stories, Poetry
Format: paperback
Pages: 264
Published: November 1, 2022
Where I got It: My shelf (Given as a gift)

Summary:
In Between Spaces, Stillhouse Press’s first ever anthology, centers the experiences of thirty-three disabled poets, short-story writers, and essayists as they navigate the physical and emotional complexities of disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence, and mental illness. Compiled by an editorial team of disabled writers, this timely collection of often-overlooked voices celebrates joy, freedom, and the power of agency, while at the same time confronting and challenging the stigmas and barriers, visible and invisible, that too often come to define life with a disability.

Review:
Someone gave this to me as a gift a while back and I'm finally diving in!

This is a collection of 33 pieces of work from people with disabilities. From poems to short stories to essays. These all navigate the physical and emotional complexities of disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence, and mental illness.

I took my time with this because I wanted to enjoy each and every story. I found myself re-reading some of the passages since they were just so good.

There was for sure a huge variety of style and messaging. I really enjoyed that! You never knew what story would be told next and in what format. Refreshing!

Not sure if I could really pick a favorite though since they were all good. Maybe the poems? I have a soft-spot for a well written poem! Especially if the format and style is different and unique....count me in!!! There wasn't any I didn't like which is RARE for an anthology. They were all good on some level.

All-in-all, this will make you think, make you smile, make you want to cry. The poems were especially good, but everything else was good too. I for sure recommend this. 5/5 stars!

Yours, eventually by Nura Maznavi

Format: 400 pages, Paperback

Published: February 18, 2025 by Dutton

From: Received from Dutton via Netgalley

Genre. Persuasion re-telling. Fiction.

I do like my Austen re-tellings, and this one is a Persuasion re-telling. It is set in a Pakistani American community, and it is not even my first Desi re-telling.

Asma is a young Doctor, and years ago her family pressured her to break up with Farooq. He was not from the right family, or rich enough. But he is back in her life and he is rich. So very rich. But that was years ago, and there can not be anything between them anymore, or can there?

I liked how the story went. We have the annoying younger sister who married first. Then the oldest sister who spends money and is all about image. And the clueless dad who does not want to admit they are in need of money.

The marriage mart is big here, and just as it was in the book.

Asma was nice, and she does want more. But there is a road there to be taken. Some courage to be had, and realisations acquired. And then everyone will live happily ever after.

A mesmerizing debut novel set in a tightly knit Pakistani American community where a young doctor gets an unexpected second chance with the first love she never got over when he becomes one of the most eligible bachelors in town.

The Ibrahim family is facing a crucial moment: Their patriarch just lost his fortune as the result of a Ponzi scheme, and the family is picking up the pieces. At the family’s core is Asma—successful doctor and the long-suffering middle daughter who stepped into the family center after the death of her beloved mother years ago. Despite what the prying aunties think, Asma is living the life she has always wanted, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a doctor . . . or so she thinks.

In walks Farooq Waheed, Asma’s college sweetheart whose proposal was cruelly rejected by Asma’s aunt and father. Now, eight years later, Farooq has made his fortune by selling his Silicon Valley startup and is widely considered one of the most eligible bachelors in California. As he enters Asma’s social orbit, she finds herself navigating a tricky landscape—her pushy sisters, gossiping aunties, and her father’s expectations—on her path to reconciling the past and winning Farooq back in the present. If there is still time.

Yours, Eventually is a story about a young woman finding the courage to follow her heart and coming to the realization that living your life according to what other people think is no life at all.

Carole´s Monday: King of Flesh and Bone

Author: Liv Zander
Narrator: Auri Alden, Gregory Salinas
Title: King of Flesh and Bone
Series: The Pale Court Duet #1
Genre: Fantasy, Dark Romance, Paranormal
Format: Audiobook
Published:  April 21, 2022
Where I got It: Borrowed from library

Summary:
Worse than a ruthless king... is a king obsessed.

Isolation, darkness, and rotting flesh,
Surrounds me, suffocates me,
But I am the vile ruler who controls it all.

I long for warmth,
Yet, all that I touch,
Is cold.

Then, she stumbles in to my domain,
Lost and frightened,
Alone and confused.

And I terrify her even more.

She calls me the devil,
So I show her pleasure,
Like only the devil can.

I am the heat that stirs her flesh,
The longing that trembles her bone.

She begs her body to refuse,
To escape my embrace,
But I am her master,
The puppeteer of passion.
I am the King of Flesh and Bone.

Welcome to my court, little one.

King of Flesh and Bone is a full-length dark fantasy novel, and book one in The Pale Court duet. The two-part story features a ruthless man, the woman who can't escape his love, and a HEA. This world contains dark themes, violence, loss, and elements of horror some may find disturbing. What this book doesn't contain is a hero - because villains do it better.

Review:
A friend of mine recommended this to me. She said it was messed up but something I should read. So why not?

The story follows the Enosh and Ada.  Ada is a mortal. She is nothing special by all accounts. She is a midwife who is now a widow and childless in a terrible world. People think she is cursed since she could never have a baby. Enosh is not just a King, but a god. His life was destroyed by the mortals he swore to protect. His job, as god, is to help the bodies of those who passed rot and become one with the Earth again. After what the mortals did to him, he won't do it anymore. Those dead are now still roaming the Earth as soulless beasts.

This was certainly dark. Lots of triggers for people so for sure be aware before reading this book.

I.....actually didn't mind this book. I'm not one for overly dark romances or Eroticas but.......I ended up liking it and put book 2 on my TBR list. Yes, some scenes bugged me a bit but...I kept on reading.

Enosh is an asshat for sure. Yes, what the mortals did to him and his family was terrible (grrr dumb humans), but man what a terrible punishment. The world is littered with (essentially) zombies. Super, duper dark for sure.

Poor, sweet Ada. I felt so bad for her especially at the end. Now I HAVE to read book two SIGHS. I need to know how things are going to get fixed. I won't spoil anything but I will say again....................................dumb humans.

The plot was limited but I feel the world was crazy detailed. I want to understand more about the other gods. We got to meet two others, I hope we learn more about the "balance" and the role of more gods in the next book.

One big issue I had was the use of modern phrases. A slip up or two doesn't bug me normally, but there were a LOT of modern phrases especially during the smex scenes. Mmm. It annoyed me. This is supposed to be a fantasy medieval world so it just didn't fit with the vibe.

The narrators did fine. I liked the girls voice. I felt like the male voice had little to do. Why even bother having him? I think he read only a few pages overall. I would've liked to hear the male voice do the male voices or something. Maybe a back and forth narration. Or more Enosh internal monologues would've been nice.

All-in-all, I'm shocked I liked this as much as I did. I couldn't stop reading! LOTS of triggers so be aware of that. Very dark, lots of smex, lots of zombies, lots of dumb humans, lots of trauma. I'll give this 3 stars.

- Favorite Character(s): Ada?
- Least Favorite Character(s): Too many to list. Humans are dumb.
