Burn for me - Ilona Andrews

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

My thoughts:
As good as Kate Daniel? Eh, no. And seriously, this cover, I hate this cover! I saw an earlier version and that was amazing! But this screams PNR. Ok nothing wrong with PNR, but this is not PNR. I hope they get a better cover for book 2.

The world was cool. Magic, Houses that rule, all interesting. Nevada was pretty kick-ass (even if she was way too distracted by a sexy guy, come on girl!)

Mad Rogan was, omg yes fine, HOT! He was just so freaking insane, and I might have a weakness for sociopaths it seems.

I did have a problem with their relationship though. He kidnaps her. And this is not a nice kidnapping (like they could be nice). No, it's BAD. And still after it, she is all, well he is hot. Really? I do get why she works with him even after that, he is powerful and she needs his help. And she does stay away. This is not a romance. They kiss once or twice?, and that is it. But she thinks about him a lot. In the end I forgive it, cos he is...ahem, hot ;) But I do feel like the kidnapping could have been done differently. Now it's more Stockholm's syndrome.

Conclusion:
Was I hyped for more? Definitely. It gets like that when everyone tells you it is AMAZEBALLS. I would not say it was that. It was good. Nothing more nothing less.

  1. What is that disorder called when the kidnapped falls in love with the kidnapper? I still want to check out this author tho. I've heard lots of good things.

  2. I agree on the cover, it definitely suggests PNR and that is not at all what this book is. Glad you enjoyed it for the most part!

    1. I really wish the pub would have gone with that first cover. I read reviews on GR where romance lovers complained that the cover had cheated them

  3. I finally managed to squeeze in a listen of this before the end of 2014. Mad Rogan was such a great character, and yeah, that cover doesn't do him justice as all.

  10. Oh I hate that kind of premise... where the woman forgives all and loses her brain. I think he should at least grovel a bit for the kidnapping. It's only fair. LOL I have this book and I will read it since you still enjoyed it.

    2. I agree. The kidnapping is bad. I'm not one for that theme, either. But it's not so much about her forgiving him, it's that by being with her, he's changing - and seeing things in a whole new way. Yes, she's attracted to him - she was before she was kidnapped, but she doesn't forget what he did to her. This isn't a romance, but over the course of a few more books, it will be. And yes... he has a lot of groveling and growing to do!

  15. Not liking the cover either. the cover looks like they couldn't choose if the book is paranormal or just romance.

  17. I also hate the cover. I read this one originally back in October and felt it was good - slow at the beginning and confusing. However, I just did a re-read via audiobook and LOVED it (review coming Thursday). I think this is one that will get better as we learn more about the characters.
