Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.
My thoughts:
As good as Kate Daniel? Eh, no. And seriously, this cover, I hate this cover! I saw an earlier version and that was amazing! But this screams PNR. Ok nothing wrong with PNR, but this is not PNR. I hope they get a better cover for book 2.
The world was cool. Magic, Houses that rule, all interesting. Nevada was pretty kick-ass (even if she was way too distracted by a sexy guy, come on girl!)
Mad Rogan was, omg yes fine, HOT! He was just so freaking insane, and I might have a weakness for sociopaths it seems.
I did have a problem with their relationship though. He kidnaps her. And this is not a nice kidnapping (like they could be nice). No, it's BAD. And still after it, she is all, well he is hot. Really? I do get why she works with him even after that, he is powerful and she needs his help. And she does stay away. This is not a romance. They kiss once or twice?, and that is it. But she thinks about him a lot. In the end I forgive it, cos he is...ahem, hot ;) But I do feel like the kidnapping could have been done differently. Now it's more Stockholm's syndrome.
Conclusion:
Was I hyped for more? Definitely. It gets like that when everyone tells you it is AMAZEBALLS. I would not say it was that. It was good. Nothing more nothing less.

What is that disorder called when the kidnapped falls in love with the kidnapper? I still want to check out this author tho. I've heard lots of good things.
ReplyDeleteStockholm syndrome ;)
DeleteAnd I do like her other books
I agree on the cover, it definitely suggests PNR and that is not at all what this book is. Glad you enjoyed it for the most part!
ReplyDeleteI really wish the pub would have gone with that first cover. I read reviews on GR where romance lovers complained that the cover had cheated them
DeleteI finally managed to squeeze in a listen of this before the end of 2014. Mad Rogan was such a great character, and yeah, that cover doesn't do him justice as all.
ReplyDeleteCarmel @ Rabid Reads
He does not look mad at all, sad
DeleteHmm, well I have heard a lot about the author but sorry to hear it wasn't what you'd hope esp with issues with relationship
ReplyDeleteIt was just not as good
DeleteI will read this this month, I promise! And yes, the cover blows
ReplyDeleteLOL ;)
DeleteI can see the appeal. I might have a thing for Neanderthals. *shrugs*
ReplyDeletehaha, I hear ya
DeleteI really liked this one, but I'm with you, it's not Kate Daniels... but Mad Rogan.. *swoon*
ReplyDeleteI miss you Kate! :/
DeleteNot a fan of cover..but as my first Andrews book I adored this..it is what made me listen to all of the Kate Daniels books in two months..so it made my top ten. I loved the characters in this one.
ReplyDeleteWell at least you liked it so that is good :D
DeleteI have this as my first book to read or listen to I think. But I will try the Kate Daniels books too.
ReplyDeleteThe Kate books are awesome
DeleteOh I hate that kind of premise... where the woman forgives all and loses her brain. I think he should at least grovel a bit for the kidnapping. It's only fair. LOL I have this book and I will read it since you still enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was bad, I mean freaking torture and shit!
DeleteI agree. The kidnapping is bad. I'm not one for that theme, either. But it's not so much about her forgiving him, it's that by being with her, he's changing - and seeing things in a whole new way. Yes, she's attracted to him - she was before she was kidnapped, but she doesn't forget what he did to her. This isn't a romance, but over the course of a few more books, it will be. And yes... he has a lot of groveling and growing to do!
DeleteI did forgive him, I just did not want to ;)
DeleteSorry you didn't find this to be as amazing as earlier readers, though I do agree that the cover could use improving. =.=
ReplyDeleteIt's so arghhh, no that is not him and not her either and they certainly do not embrace a lot
DeleteHaaaaaaaaaate.
ReplyDeleteGood, not amazing, I am glad someone agrees :)
Not for me - the whole "falling for the kidnapper" thing bothers me.
ReplyDeleteI hear you
DeleteUgly cover - and I swear I've seen those two on another cover... a PNR cover, if I remember correctly. :D
ReplyDeleteCheesy PNR, le sigh
DeleteNot liking the cover either. the cover looks like they couldn't choose if the book is paranormal or just romance.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's neither, it's UF
Deleteawww, too bad it didn't live up :(
ReplyDeleteIt happens
DeleteI agree with you on the cover. I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next installment.
ReplyDeleteI just hope the next cover is better
DeleteI also hate the cover. I read this one originally back in October and felt it was good - slow at the beginning and confusing. However, I just did a re-read via audiobook and LOVED it (review coming Thursday). I think this is one that will get better as we learn more about the characters.
ReplyDeleteI kept hating the cover and thinking it was pnr even though it was not pnr, darn cover
Deletehot, powerful vs cruel, asshole kidnapper ... not sure it's for me lol
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to read it too. Sorry it wasn't as good for you as it did for me. I can't wait for book 2!
ReplyDeleteI hoped for me :/
DeleteI hate the cover too, but I thought the rest of it is pretty great and their sense of humor is just amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteI did like that part
DeleteSo not a fan of the Stockholm Syndrome thing in general, but I'm glad you still enjoyed it overall! I agree, that cover screams pnr to me.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder what they were thinking with this cover
DeleteHehehe. I maybe should have a go. That cover really disgust me however. Seems like total brain candy. Plus I always love the world they build, despite the problems I have with the stories. Cool review!
ReplyDeleteDo not look at the cover, the cover made me not wanna read it,
DeleteThe cover is awful. It's not even GOOD pnr. It's cheesy pnr cover. I have this one on my tbr pile. I do enjoy their books so hopefully it'll work for me.
ReplyDeleteTotally cheesy pnr!
DeleteOk, putting it on my library hold list now.
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteI need to read more Ilona Andrews. I have a feeling I'll be tackling this one first before I continue with the Kate Daniels series.
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
But the other series is so much better ;)
DeleteI've heard that the cover is really inaccurate. Stupid really then the wrong people buy thee book. Sounds good even if the girl was too guy distracted. Oh not a kidnapping love story!
ReplyDeleteYes! And after reading reviews on GR, romance lovers were upset of the lack of romance cos the cover had promised them, not to mention it says pnr on it
DeleteI need to get this one. I do enjoy their stories and would like to still read it. Maybe the next books will get better and better with age. ;) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWho knows :)
DeleteOh, yes. Hideous cover. If I was browsing, I might pass it up (oh, who am I kidding. It's Ilona Andrews. Auto-buy!)
ReplyDeleteIf not ILona then def pass by for me
DeleteYou and me both! I love hot sociopaths in books too! :))) Let's hope for a better cover for book #2!
ReplyDeletehaha, they are just so crazy
