Gavin Guile is dying. He'd thought he had five years left--now he has less than one. With fifty thousand refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiancée who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin has problems on every side. All magic in the world is running wild and threatens to destroy the Seven Satrapies. Worst of all, the old gods are being reborn, and their army of color wights is unstoppable. The only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole sixteen years ago.
My thoughts:
I did not remember a single thing from book 1. It took me 3 years to go from book 1 to 2, but then it took that long for it to get published too.
The details I remembered were sketchy, and I was all, can I even do this? But I read on, and I could!
Gavin's story, eh, I am not a fan of Gavin. I can't remember everything, but from what I know here, he is just too focused.
There was also a tiny POV of Liv, I have no idea why she switched to the bad side. Is it the bad side? That guy had good ideas and BAD ideas. Liv was meh.
But Kip! Oh I am glad his was the important POV, I liked to see him struggle at school. He is a bastard, he is fat. But he has magic, and his father wants him to join this elite team of fighter. People despise him. He is a fighter.
At the end I wanted book 3. Because the end was all no! Really?! Luckily for me book 3 is actually out, and book 4 is coming next year, so no real wait. No 3 years. ;) Well a little wait but still...
Conclusion:
Since I do not remember book 1 I can't really compare. But compared to his other series I did enjoy those more. Still, it is a good series, and hey, no 3 year breaks between books! So I do look forward to reading more.

It's always good when an instalment can stand on its own. Shows how easily you're able to follow even though it'd taken you years to read it. :)
ReplyDeleteI kept waiting for the library to get it, cos they said they would. And then I was all, I can't buy this one anymore, I can't remember anything,
DeleteSeems like an amazing book!!

I do want book 3 now..noooow
Delete3 years in between books is a long time! I would have struggled to remember details too, but I'm glad you were able to get into it without too much trouble!
ReplyDeleteI know! 3 years between it getting published. But then 3 years for me to read it too, even though I read book 1 2 years after publication
DeleteI haven't read anything in this series and think I would prefer to start at the beginning. That said there is lots of series I don't read in sequence so if I came across this I would probably give it a go.

Ok def start with book 1. Cos I did remember more and more..not everything though ;) I still do not know why Liv left. Maybe that is why I was a bit so and so with her
DeleteI have mixed feelings about this series. It's all right but not amazing, but at the same time I'm enjoying myself enough that I've been reluctant to stop reading. Guess I'm in it to the end.

Yup, I did not like it as much as his night..? series. But still good enough for me to want more.
DeleteYikes, and I thought the standard 1 year in YA was too much where I started to forget
ReplyDelete1 year is a lot
DeleteWow. That is a long book. I am glad you don't have to wait too long for the next one.
ReplyDeleteI do not really want to forget it all again
DeleteThey can be that
ReplyDeleteI hate it when so much time passes and I have to struggle to remember details.
ReplyDelete3 years is WAY too long
DeleteA huge book! But I am glad you finally got to book 2.

ReplyDeleteThank the fantasy gods for that!
DeleteI hate when there is so long between books. Glad most of it came back to you and you enjoyed it - and don't have to wait for the next one.
ReplyDeleteKaren @For What It's Worth
Very happy that there is no wait...
DeleteYay for Kip! I like fighters, especially when they've got a whole lot on their plate. 3 years, though ... wow! Long wait, dude :)
ReplyDeleteSo freaking long *checking* There is another series I have waited 3 years on too. It's out now, finally 5 years after the last book
DeleteHeck, I can't remember the details from a series I read 6 months ago...
ReplyDeleteTime is evil
DeleteI've noticed my memory has gotten worse with series.... And I always take too much time between books in series.
ReplyDeleteIt's really bad and it makes me not appreciate the books at much
