I must say, I thought this would be set in Ancient India, sadly it was not. I get why, probably cos now we do not believe in magic and beings and that is why. But I really wanted ancient India because modern day problems are so modern.

Sheetal's mum left when she was little. And her mother was a Star, ok so I do confess that I do not get that, I did feel like we were supposed to know all about hindu mythology and religion. And I fear my knowledge ends with the Gods. It has been too long. But yes stars are people and live in the sky where they drink blue mango juice (this was mentioned so many times), and sometimes they come to earth to inspire people.

And then Sheetal goes to the sky too and here it got better, but at the same time it was not what I wanted. See, the whole story is about her preparing for a talent show and the drama that that entails. Because the Stars want to see a talent show with mortals. Why? Who knows. That part was weird.

And then there is drama with her boyfriend showing up, so lots of but he is so hot! But I can't.

Also there is this nightmarket on earth where suddenly there is magic everywhere, and how has no one seen this? And how could her bestie jump a few clouds and be with the stars?

Ok I nitpick. I did enjoy it, but, yeah I felt like there were a few problems, and without them it could have been great. Like no talent show. We are with stars, give us stars.

I still enjoyed it thanks to the narrator. She did a good job with everything.

The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be “normal.” But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star’s help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago.

Sheetal’s quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family’s champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens — and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all.

  2. I have a copy of this book. I am confused about how her mom is a star. It sounds like a decent read overall though.

  3. Well, I was curious about this one, but it sounds kinda like it ended up being typical/mediocre? I'm super picky with YA these days, I don't want okay, I want great :)
