But all that changed when Geoffrey's business went under. Now penniless and homeless, Geoffrey is living with his recently widowed mother, whilst Olivia has been forced to take a job as housemistress at her son's elite boarding school.
Soon the cracks in the relationship start to show. And, increasingly desperate, Geoffrey makes a mistake. One that could have consequences for the whole family . . .
My thoughts:
This is about a marriage that is falling apart, and with that their world.
Geoffrey lost his business. The people in the village does not exactly say hi to him anymore, and he has to live with his mother. Olivia moved in at her son's boarding school for free room and pay. She is the one that seems to be doing better. She is trying to move on, to make something of their new life. While he is stuck in the rut of living at home doing nothing.
So yes of course their marriage took a hit from that, and from them living apart. But honestly, were they even good for each other? Sure they loved each other, but did they marry for the right reason? No. That does make it harder to keep up when things get tough.
The story is also about her new life at the school, trying to keep up with everything, and the drama that teenage boys can make.
And they make mistakes. Olivia, Geoffrey, their son. But then everyone makes mistakes, but some mistakes are not really mistakes.
Oh and the grandma, ugh, I can totally understand why Olivia chose to live at the school instead. Trust me.
Conclusion;
A good book that shows the cracks in real life. I liked how it all ended.
