An old review that has been left hanging.
My thoughts:
I have no idea what happened. I could never get into the book. The first 1 was so good, I loved the style. Here, well here the style failed for me. I got annoyed at the feeling that I stood at the outside looking in. I never got warm, I never felt like I was there. I did not like the constant POV changes, 4 were too many in a book like this.
I was never invested in the story, I never cared about these two, or Isabel and Cole. But most of all nothing at all happened. It was a long fever dream where most of the time was spent "oh I love you, I miss you" etc etc. If someone would ask me what happened I would say that Grace and Sam thought about each other, Cole was dealing with his change and Grace's parents got mad, cos that was it (edit: and if you would ask me now, months later I would say that I can't remember anything..except for a rockstar.)
Conclusion:
It was still ok, it was just not.. interesting.

I remember liking this even more than the first novel in the series - I am happy that there are only 3 books in this series because I feel like some series just go on and on and the story starts to lack.

DeleteI've read different reviews, good and bad, of Maggie Stiefvater books. I would like to try one but now I am even more sure I won't like it.

DeleteOh noes! I have to admit I like Maggie's style. It's melancholic and poetic, but yes, you're right it's slow plot wise, not much happens. :)

DeleteThis was not the series for me either. I just couldn't quite get involved with Sam or Grace, and I never made it past book 1 despite how much everyone else seemed to love it. *sigh* I did adore THE SCORPIO RACES though, I thought that one was brilliant, and I can't wait to read THE RAVEN BOYS:)

DeleteI've not read any Stiefvater, but I admit that the beauty of the covers alone makes me want to buy all her boks! Sad it wasn't that great.

DeleteI think that an author has to be careful with POV changes. Sometimes it works to add insight, but it can go wrong very quickly. I also have to agree, sometimes these series just go on too damn long. It is almost like they keep going until they have nothing else to deliver and no one is paying attention any longer. I say quit while your ahead and keep readers buzzing. Thank you for your review.

I loved the first book, liked the second and hated the third. It's really sad how wrong this series went.

DeleteBook 1 lost me after just a few chapters. I thought the writing and the story were ridiculous. What kind of kid goes outside in the snow and lies down with a bunch of wolves? Considering my feelings about this book I was shocked by how much I enjoyed The Scorpio Races.

I've heard that a lot of people didn't love the last book Forever but I haven't heard much about Linger.
ReplyDeleteI still need to read Shiver. I've kind of avoided it because of all the hype. I usually don't love things as much as everyone else. Especially in YA
Hype can be evil, I always fear hype cos it's always a letdown..well mostly. But I do fear the last one now as this one was just so very very meh
