Audio: A golden grave by Erin Lindsey

This is book 2, and even if it does work as a stand alone in a away, then you really should read book 1 first to see how it all happened.

Rose used to work as a maid, now she is a Pinkerton agent. And her new partner is the man she used to work for, and the man she has a crush on. Rose is clever, she can feel ghosts, and she will not have other agents hold her background against her.

I do enjoy how some of the Rich have something called "Luck", which of course is how they became rich. There are different sorts, like remembering everything you see, feeling where something has been and so forth. It brings in something extra in this world that also has shades and other dimensions, and that is why there are Pinkerton, special branch so the rest of the population does not find out.

Oh and yes her partner Thomas, I do like him (and they should totally get it on). A rich Englishman who is ell very English.

A hunt for a murderer who has Roosevelt as his next target. Rose trying to juggle her new life. New friends and old friends showing up. A good mystery, a good hunt.

Narration
I like Barrie's voice. She does a good voice for men and women, different accents and so on. She brings something extra to it all

Narrated by: Barrie Kreinik,____Series: Rose Gallagher Mystery, Book 2____Length: 11 hrs and 17 mins Unabridged Audiobook --------Release date: 09-17-19-------Publisher: Macmillan Audio------Historical fiction Mystery ------In exchange for an honest review

Rose Gallagher always dreamed of finding adventure, so her new life as a freshly-minted Pinkerton agent ought to be everything she ever wanted. Only a few months ago, she was just another poor Irish housemaid from Five Points; now, she’s learning to shoot a gun and dance the waltz and throw a grown man over her shoulder. Better still, she’s been recruited to the special branch, an elite unit dedicated to cases of a paranormal nature, and that means spending her days alongside the dashing Thomas Wiltshire.

But being a Pinkerton isn’t quite what Rose imagined, and not everyone welcomes her into the fold. Meanwhile, her old friends aren’t sure what to make of the new Rose, and even Thomas seems to be having second thoughts about his junior partner. So when a chilling new case arrives on Rose’s doorstep, she jumps at the chance to prove herself – only to realize that the stakes are higher than she could have imagined. Six delegates have been murdered at a local political convention, and the police have no idea who–or what–is responsible. One thing seems clear: The killer’s next target is a candidate for New York City mayor, one Theodore Roosevelt.

Convinced that something supernatural is afoot, Rose and Thomas must track down the murderer before Roosevelt is taken out of the race–permanently. But this killer is unlike any they’ve faced before, and hunting him down will take them from brownstones to ballrooms to Bowery saloons. Not quite comfortable anywhere, Rose must come to terms with her own changed place in society–and the fact that some would do anything to see her gone from it entirely.

My Thoughts
I did not expect it to take the turn it did. Which just shows that if you do not read the blurb then you do go in blind. Which can be a good thing.

Character thoughts:
Rose is a housemaid. Through her eyes we get the New York of the day. She is Irish, she is from 5 points (well nothing new there, I know how the Irish were treated.) Then one day her employer vanishes. Oh and wait, she has like the HUGEST crush on him. That poor girl, she is really smitten. And me being a hopeless romantic I hope that one day then can have a happily ever after. I mean if he too wants it.

Rose was resourceful, she had courage and she wanted more. I loved how she said it, a simple More. She wanted more from life then to work work work and then die. Never leaving New York.

And yes there are more people too, but I shall not spoil it all.

Story:
A historical mystery is always more fun. There is a lot of legwork, a lot of guessing and a lot of watching for clues. And to figure things out on my own is way too hard. Not that I am good at it anyway.

Then there was the ghostly aspect. I did not expect that and suddenly the story took a different turn. Suddenly there was more to the world and the whole universe expanded. I guess I felt like Rose did, all whaat? And then wanting to know more.

Conclusion.
An interesting start to a new series. It works as a stand alone too, but the end promises more. Or at least I hope so. If not then I am happy with this ending, but I do still want more since it is by no means over.

Narrator: Barrie Kreinik
She did a good job. Going from accent to accent to upper class to lower class. Yes there was a lot of jumping between classes and nationalities when you are investigation something.
She held a good pace and kept it light.

Blurb
Rose Gallagher might dream of bigger things, but she’s content enough with her life as a housemaid. After all, it’s not every girl from Five Points who gets to spend her days in a posh Fifth Avenue brownstone, even if only to sweep its floors. But all that changes on the day her boss, Mr. Thomas Wiltshire, disappears. Rose is certain Mr. Wiltshire is in trouble, but the police treat his disappearance as nothing more than the whims of a rich young man behaving badly. Meanwhile, the friend who reported him missing is suspiciously unhelpful. With nowhere left to turn, Rose takes it upon herself to find her handsome young employer.

The investigation takes her from the marble palaces of Fifth Avenue to the sordid streets of Five Points. When a ghostly apparition accosts her on the street, Rose begins to realize that the world around her isn’t at all as it seems―and her place in it is about to change forever.

The Bloodsworn - Erin Lindsey

Unbeknownst to most of Alden, Kbloodbinder, is locked away in his own palace, plotting revenge. To save her king, Lady Alix must journey behind enemy lines to destroy the bloodbinder. But her quest will demand sacrifices that may be more than she can bear.
ing Erik, in thrall to a cruel

Meanwhile, as the Warlord of Oridia tightens his grip on Alden, the men Alix loves face equally deadly tasks: her husband, Liam, must run a country at war while her brother, Rig, fights a losing battle on the front lines. If any one of them fails, Alden could be lost—and, even if they succeed, their efforts may be too late to save everyone Alix holds dear...

My thoughts:
I do feel disappointed. Yes, the book was good, but neither this one or book 2 were as good as book 1. That one had promise, but it never got as good.

Alix in this one, well she did her thing.
Liam did not do a lot. I still do not see them together.
Eric, I still think Alix should have been with him, and yes that triangle kept popping up. It got tiresome. It should have been left in book 1 where it was resolved.

There is danger ahead. The army is approaching, and here we really see how this is light fantasy. Epic is was sure not. The final battle is in the very last pages and poof, 5 pages later the end, the battle was over in a few pages. Was there a battle. I do not know. They sure defeated them fast.

Ok so yes I only have negative things to say. But for a reeeeally light fantasy book it was good, a little adventure, some drama. Nothing serious. But it is hanging loose in that 3, that is does. It could have been so much more.

The Bloodforged - Erin Lindsey

When the war began, Lady Alix Black played a minor role, scouting at the edge of the king’s retinue in relative anonymity. Though she’s once again facing an attacking Oridian force determined to destroy all she holds dear, she is now bodyguard to the king and wife to the prince.

Still, she is unprepared for what the revival of the war will mean. Erik is willing to take drastic measures to defend his domain, even if it means sending Prince Liam into a deadly web of intrigue and traveling into the perilous wild lands of Harram himself.

Only the biggest threat to the kingdom might be one that neither Alix nor Erik could have imagined, or prepared for…

My thoughts:
This book suffered from second book syndrome. Still good, but lacking that which made book 1 so good. This book felt mostly like, well they walked around a lot, not much happened, and then they walked some more.

Alix was changed in this one. She who was a kick-ass scout was now lovesick and not so kick-ass.

I still think she and the king should have married. Liam, eh, I am not a fan, and in this one he was like a lost puppy trying to find his way.

Team Eric!

Right Liam, well he was sent to this kingdom for support. And Eric to another. Why it was not vice versa I do not know. You do not send the king to the dangerous one.

Conclusion:
I still liked it cos it was easy to read, but at the same time....barely a 3. So barely good then. Light fantasy.

The Bloodbound - Erin Lindsey

A cunning and impetuous scout, Alix only wishes to serve quietly on the edges of the action. But when the king is betrayed by his own brother and left to die at the hands of attacking Oridian forces, she winds up single-handedly saving her sovereign.

Suddenly, she is head of the king’s personal guard, an honor made all the more dubious by the king’s exile from his own court. Surrounded by enemies, Alix must help him reclaim his crown, all the while attempting to repel the relentless tide of invaders led by the Priest, most feared of Oridia’s lords.

But while Alix’s king commands her duty, both he and a fellow scout lay claim to her heart. And when the time comes, she may need to choose between the two men who need her most…

My thoughts:
A fantasy romance, with a bit more fighting than romance. So the romance could have been left out entirely, cos Alix sure spent a lot of time thinking of her men. Focus on the war woman!

So this society lets it's women fight too. Ok good for them. But it did raise some questions. If you are allowed to fool around during your two year service, what happens if the woman get pregnant? I doubt the lords would like when their daughters come home with a bastards. So all bastards are just put into orphanages? Accidents do happen. And is it just highborn ladies that must do military service? Or lowborn too? Cos I did not see any lowborn ones? And then there is the fact that men are stronger, sure many women became scouts, but still. I sure would not want to do military service for 2 years, that would suck.

Back to the book. Alix is very good at sneaking around, so she is a good scout. She is highborn and serving during war. But then she spends lots of time thinking about the love triangle she created. She suddenly falls for 2 men, but might like one more. She should have put an end to it at once, I did not like how she played it. And even if the book does have a happy ending, I did not like how it ended for one. All parties can never be happy in a triangle.

For those who love fantasy romance and lots of romance, then it might not be enough. For those who does not want romance in fantasy then there will be too much ;) But for those who just enjoy a good story then give it a go.

Conclusion:
Politics, war, even some sort of zombies. I enjoyed the book and I want to read more.

But! I so want a map, I want maps in fantasy, I want to take look where they live.
