Audio: Done for the best

By: Amy D'Orazio

Narrated by: Simon Alison

Series: The Engaged to Mr Darcy Series

Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins

Release date: 06-27-25

Publisher: Quills & Quartos Publishing

Categories: Pride and Prejudice variation/audible

Someone asked me after I had the last book about the series name so I went back to book 1 to investigate ;) It seems Lizzy and Darcy gets engaged by circumstances and not by want, at least in the two I have read.

Here we open after the dreaded proposal scene. It is the day after and Lizzy is missing! Oh no! She has been bitten by an adder and is at death's door! But it gets even more eventful as Lizzy has memory loss and believes herself to be engaged to Darcy. Oh no, how will this end?

Obviously she will find out the truth and therein lies the drama of the book.

Love will prevail. And Wickham will show up to be an ass. And Lady Catherine is not a total nuisance.

I enjoyed it, I always do. Good narration too

Perhaps this concealment, this disguise, was beneath me… It is done, however, and it was done for the best. Elizabeth Bennet, walking in Kent the day after Mr Darcy’s proposal meets with an unfortunate mishap. A meeting with an adder has disastrous consequences for her and when she wakes from a period of unconsciousness, she has no memory at all of the last ten months of her life. To her complete shock she learns that she is engaged to a man called Darcy, a man she has no recollection of meeting before.

Darcy is shocked himself to realize that Elizabeth thinks she is engaged to him but his efforts to correct her misapprehension are thwarted by those around her who believe that to learn the truth will be detrimental to her recovery. As the days go by, Darcy and Elizabeth spend time together, reading and driving out around Kent, behaving as the lovers Darcy always dreamt they would be. To continue in the disguise, to forget the contentions and misunderstandings of their past proves an unbearable temptation.

When the worst happens and Elizabeth learns that not only did she refuse Darcy’s proposal, she hated him. What she learns seems completely incongruous with the man she has fallen in love with…and yet she simply does not know if she can forgive him for deceiving her.

Lula Dean´s Little Library of Banned Books

Format: 304 pages, Paperback

Published: July 7, 2024 by HQ Fiction GB

Fiction/borrowed

This felt heavier than I had expected.

Small southern town which seems to be filled with neonazis, racists, biggots, well you name it. And then Lula Dean gets the notion that books makes you gay, trans, everything that that is not Christian and right. So she bans most books from the library and opens her own little booklibrary thing on her front lawn.

The book is told in in many povs that gets their own chapter. Bad ones that think this is right, good ones that want to fight it, and then the middle people who I found interesting. The ones who went to see what crappy books she had and found other books inside. And those books changed their lives. They learned about rape, racism, antisemitism and wanted to change something in their lives.

An interesting book, and there is hope. Also for I really liked the epilogue for once. That one was cool

Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

But Beverly’s daughter Lindsay sneaks in by night and secretly fills Lula Dean’s little free library with banned books wrapped in “wholesome” dust jackets. The Girl’s Guide to the Revolution is wrapped in the cover of The Southern Belle’s Guide to Etiquette. A jacket that belongs to Our Confederate Heroes ends up on Beloved. One by one, neighbors who borrow books from Lula Dean’s library find their lives changed in unexpected ways. Finally, one of Lula Dean’s enemies discovers the library and decides to turn the tables on her, just as Lula and Beverly are running against each other to replace the town’s disgraced mayor.

That’s when all the townspeople who’ve been borrowing from Lula’s library begin to reveal themselves. It’s a diverse and surprising bunch—including the local postman, the prom queen, housewives, a farmer, and the former DA—all of whom have been changed by what they’ve read. When Lindsay is forced to own up to what she’s done, the showdown that’s been brewing between Beverly and Lula will roil the whole town...and change it forever.

Carole´s Monday: Garters, ghosts and wedding toasts

Author: Angie Fox
Narrator: Hollie Jackson
Title: Garters, Ghosts and Wedding Toasts
Series: Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries #15
Genre: Paranormal, Mystery, Cozy mystery
Format: Audiobook
Published:  February 27, 2026
Where I Got It: My shelf (Audible)

Summary:
When Verity Long agrees to be her sister’s maid of honor, she expects wedding cake and champagne—not a dead hostess, a cursed honeymoon suite, and a ghostly bride reliving her tragic final moments. With a killer on the loose, a ballroom full of restless spirits, and Frankie stirring up trouble with a rogue ghost hunter, Verity must race to uncover the truth before Melody’s dream wedding becomes her worst nightmare.

Review:
Yayy book 15! Been waiting so long for this one (*cough* not that long *cough*)

Note......read the other books before this one. Lots of references, etc.

The time has come for Verity's sister to get married! Verity hopes it will be a calm and beautiful wedding weekend filled with cake and champagne. But alas, that will not be the case.....the honeymoon suite is cursed, there is a ghostly bride reliving her tragic moments, a killer is on the loose, Frankie is causing trouble, and secrets everywhere. It will be up to Verity and team to find the truth and stop Melody's man from being the next victim.

Always a blast. I simply love Verity and her crew.

Loved the mysteries. So many red herrings and so many people (and ghosts) with motives. Who knows! I had zero idea until close to the end.

I'm still a little on the fence about our new narrator. This is her second one, and I am still feeling pouty about it. I loved our old voice, but this one is doing okay. Maybe the next book I'll finally settle in with her voice. Sighs.

But yes, so much fun. Great characters. A fun local change. Wedding. Love. Ghosts. What more can you ask for?

Stamping this with 4 stars.

Narrated by: Kate Handford

Release date: 11-27-24

Length: 4 hrs and 31 mins

Publisher: K.L.A. Fricke Inc

Categories: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense/own

I am enjoying this series so much that I have to listen to the novellas.

It is Christmas time and Mallory has settled in Edinburgh 1869. She gets the chance to meet Dickens. They have a new case involving a widow and the intimate letters she sent that are missing.

And, well I really like Mallory and Grey together. I want them together!

Great narration, great story.

It’s Mallory Atkinson’s first Christmas in Scotland. Victorian Scotland, that is. Also, as the twenty-first-century detective learns, Christmas really isn’t a thing in Victorian Scotland. It’s all about Hogmanay. But her boss, Dr. Duncan Gray, treats her to an early gift of tickets to the event of the a Charles Dickens reading. There, they bump into Lady Inglis—the lovely widow who has sent Gray sexy letters trying to entice him back to her bed.

Lady Inglis introduces Mallory to Dickens—the meeting of a lifetime—but in return she wants their help. She’s being blackmailed. Someone stole letters she wrote to another lover and is threatening to publish them.

Mallory isn’t sure what to make of Lady Inglis, but no woman deserves that, so she insists on taking the case with or without Gray’s help. Growing tension between them soon tells Mallory that Gray is hiding a secret of his own. She has until Hogmanay to uncover the blackmailer…and, hopefully, to put things right with Gray so they can enjoy the holiday together.

Audio: Disturbing the dead by Kelley Armstrong

By: Kelley Armstrong

Narrated by: Kate Handford

Series: A Rip Through Time Novella Duo, Book 3

Length: 14 hrs and 23 mins

Release date: 05-07-24

Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Categories: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense /own

Mallory and Grey are invited to a mummy unwrapping. Mallory finds it quite distasteful, as does Grey, but they go. And soon they have a murder to solve.

A mummy, theft, the Edinburgh underworld. Mallory gets busy in this one. She also contemplates her life here and if she will ever get back. And if she does get back, well after time here she would sure miss it.

She has gone from housemaid to assistant. She has made friends, and she also keeps getting into trouble.

I enjoy this series a great deal. I am almost caught up with everything now...soon!

An interesting historical fiction mystery series that is worth a go.

Great narration too!

Victorian Scotland is becoming less strange to modern-day homicide detective Mallory Atkinson. Though inhabiting someone else’s body will always be unsettling, even if her employers know that she’s not actually housemaid Catriona Mitchell, ever since the night both of them were attacked in the same dark alley 150 years apart. Mallory likes her job as assistant to undertaker/medical examiner Dr. Duncan Gray, and is developing true friends―and feelings―in this century.

So, understanding the Victorian fascination with death, Mallory isn't that surprised when she and her friends are invited to a mummy unwrapping at the home of Sir Alastair Christie. When their host is missing when it comes time to unwrap the mummy, Gray and Mallory are asked to step in. And upon closer inspection, it’s not a mummy they’ve unwrapped, but a much more modern body.

Game Changer by Rachel Reid

Series: Game Changers (#1)

Format: 368 pages, Paperback

Published: November 26, 2024 by Carina Press

Romance/library

I have not watched the tv series, I would have to get HBO again, oh well one day. Anyway, the library had this one, and I guess more so I gave it a go.

Lots of time books show how spicy they are and I am all, srsly? They did it once after 300 pages,it does not deserve 4 chilis. BUT, this one, well that one needs all the chilis.

Scott is gay, but he is also a hockey player and he keeps his flings brief and out of country. Until he meets Kip who is cute and makes smoothies. They have this secret affair, but we all know secrets are not fun and Kip wants more.

I enjoyed it, it was an easy read. Lots of spice, hockey and everything will work out.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic...and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, nevermind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

3/17/2026 Do you prefer single narrator, duet/dual narration, full cast, or "graphic audio" audiobooks?

This is sort of a tough one too. It all depends! Single narrator can be awesome, sometimes a dual is really fun, especially if the book is written in his and hers pov. I have also done full cast and suddenly there are people everywhere and that is fun too. Graphic might actually be my least fav, all those sounds!

In the end I am used to single narrators and a great narrator can shine through out an entire book :)

Carole´s Monday Movie: Dracula

Title: Dracula - A Love Tale
Length: 2h 9m
Released: 2025 (2026 US)
Genre: Fantasy, Horror, Romance
Rating: R
Where I Got It: Apple TV

SUMMARY:
When a 15th-century prince denounces God after the loss of his wife he inherits an eternal curse: he becomes Dracula. Condemned to wander the centuries, he defies fate and death, guided by a single hope - to be reunited with his lost love.

REVIEW:
I saw this trailer a while back, and I have been waiting and waiting for it to arrive in the US. When it finally did, I dragged Hubby to the couch to make him watch this with me. I looove a good Dracula film!

Here we have Dracula, who was a prince in the 15th-century. He killed and did many bad things in the name of God. The only thing he asked for was protection for his wife. Well...she was murdered and died in his arms, so he turned his back on God, which in turn God gave him an eternal curse. Condemned to never die and to drink blood for survival. He hopes his beloved will be reincarnated since she was of a pure soul. 400 years later...he has found her and no one will stop him from reclaiming his love.

What a lovely cast. What a lovely story. I really, really enjoyed it. The guy who played Dracula was amazing.

This rendition certainly played up the love story and made this more of a romance. Still some horror elements, but certainly more romantic.

That last scene literally broke me. SOO good. SOO perfect.

No issues for me. Hubby said he liked it, but he thought it had some weird elements. I disagree. I liked the change-ups.

We have the romance and the horror. We also were given splashes of comedy that made me smile.

I'll give this 5 stars. I want to watch it again!

The Accidental Dating Experiment by Lauren Blakely

By: Lauren Blakely

Narrated by: Andi Arndt, Jacob Morgan

Series: How to Date, Book 4

Length: 6 hrs and 55 mins

Release date: 04-11-24

Publisher: Audible Originals

Contemporary romance/from audible

Maybe I should have started something else, but I sort of just continued listened, but I was not really feeling it.

Monroe and Juliet has a podcast. She also goes on bad dates. Then they inherit a house and he becomes her dating coach. Oh and they had a fling years ago.

Things heat up, but he has some issues that I never really got. She really liked him and tiny bit of drama ensues.

It was good at times, and at times I felt like I would not miss much if I fell asleep for 30 minutes. Lol, ok that sounds bad.

Eight years ago I fell into a secret summer fling with the bright, big-hearted Juliet before our lives went in different directions.

Now, I’m the grumpy to her sunshine on a popular dating podcast we host, and when a wealthy fan gives us a charming coastal cottage as the biggest thank you ever, we head to the town where I grew up to give it a makeover.

And find the house has only one bed. Located under a mirrored ceiling.

To make matters even harder, the woman I’ve been pining for tells me she wants to try to find the one and would I please be her dating coach for the week?

Like hell I’ll let her date other men. I’ll coach her on three dates with me.  But the second I take her out, I don’t feel like her teacher. I feel like she’s mine, especially when the first night ends with us tangled up together in that bed.

Each night we grow closer, but this dating experiment forces me to face my greatest fear – whether a man like me is worthy of her love.

Even though I’m already head over heels for her.

What moves the dead by T.Kingfisher

Format: 175 pages, Paperback

Published: October 18, 2022 by Titan Books

Horror/Historical

Own

I saw that some said it was chilling horror and gory, while some said it was soft horror, and yeah I am more on that soft horror thing. Nothing gruesome happens. It is more a slow build up and sensing something is wrong. Nothing gory, but something that is creepy at the end.

Easton is called by an old friend who seems to be dying and living in a moldy mansion. Her brother looks pretty bad too. Something weird is going on with hares on the property and some old lady is looking at fungi in this made up European country in the 1890s.

But I enjoyed it. It was short, and I wanted to know what it was. I was also watching Stargate SG1 at the same time and they had this episode that was similar ;)

Soft horror.

When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruravia.

What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.

Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.

Say you´ll remember me by Abby Jimenez

Series: Say You'll Remember Me (#1)

Format: 357 pages, Paperback

Published: April 1, 2025 by Piatkus

Romance/own

I have mixed feelings about this one. It feels like the kind of romance that some people that I have seen say is So much better than the other ones cos it is more real. Well the whole real thing is why I want to genre it as romantic fiction because it was so bloody depressing.

Sam meets Xavier. There is dislike at first, but then they go on a magical date. Big reveal. She is moving to California.

And then comes many months of heartache. He cant move. She cant move. Plan tickets costs money. He is working himself to death. Her mum has Alzheimers and the whole family must care for her. Her dad has an affair. Everyone is constantly unhappy.

And that is the book, everyone being constantly unhappy, except for moments when they can meet. But those moments are filled with hardship.

So yes I liked it for the story, but as a romance it feels so real and depressing. I want more sunshine you know. I do not read romance for the realness of it. I also do not like that some have come to say that the real romances are better than the others. Always the competition.

There's no such thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediate yes. That is until Xavier opens his mouth and proves that even sculpted gods can say the absolute wrong thing. Like, really wrong. Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong ... unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake.

But after one incredible and seemingly endless date, Samantha is forced to admit the truth, that her family is in crisis and any kind of relationship would be impossible. Samantha begs Xavier to forget her. To remember their night together as a perfect moment, as crushing as that may be. Only no amount of distance or time is enough to forget what's between them. And the only thing better than one single perfect memory is to make a life—and even a love—worth remembering.

That is hard! So many that seems normal then come out as aholes or something.

Ok random random, Elijah Wood seems like a fun guy doesn´t he? Bestie material and he was in LOTR.

Always when I see Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez they seem nice...if they are who knows? But they seem kind of normal.

Oh and can we throw in Paul Rudd in there cos he seems fun and all around nice.

But this was hard. Some people portray something that they might not be

Carole´s Monday: Murderer´s a witch

Author: Danielle Garrett
Title: Murder's a Witch
Series: Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery #1
Genre: Cozy mystery, Paranormal
Format: ebook
Pages: 332
Published: August 9, 2016
Where I got It: Kindle Unlimited

Summary:
I’m a witch with a problem. Okay, make that lots of problems.

Following a slight misunderstanding with magical law enforcement, I wind up expelled from the hidden supernatural community known as the Seattle Haven. My parole office dumps me in a tiny beach town with nothing but my collection of worldly possessions and a warning that this is my last shot.

I don’t think I’m cut out for the human world, but when stuck between a prison cell and a haunted halfway house, I suppose I’ll take option B.

Things start out better than expected, I even manage to make a few friends, but when my boss at the local coffee house is found dead in an alley, I get tangled up in the investigation, and might have to blow my cover to prove my friend’s innocence.

Add to that a fussy ghost landlady, warring vampire and shifter roommates, and my rapidly dwindling savings, and I’m beginning to wonder if I might have been better off serving that prison sentence after all.

It’s too late now. I’m in the thick of it and come hex or high water, I’ll get to the bottom of this murder, even if it means permanent banishment from the magical world.

Review:
Been meaning to read more by this author, especially since I finished a different series. I picked up this one. I believe the two are in the same world. I could be wrong. My poor brain can't remember anything lately.

Here we follow Holly, who has landed in this small town. This is her last chance to reform. She is determined to find happiness and be done. She likes this town and some of the people. Things seem to have found a lovely pace until her grumpy boss is found murdered and her bestie is accused. She will need to figure out the truth! On top of this murder mystery, she has to keep a snoopy PI away from her home and figure out if the flirty shifter is actually interested or playing games. Lots to do. Not a lot of time to do it.

Oh no.

Eeeek!

I'll just spit it out!

I wasn't a fan of this one. *hides*

Holly was meh.

The shifter was annoying.

I did like some of the side characters, like Cass. And some of the banter was cute.

There is a whiff of a love triangle, and I don't care for any of the angles of the triangle. Meh.

The mystery really wasn't a mystery. Either the cops in this town don't care, or they flat out suck. C'mon.

I did hold on and finished it because I had hope in my heart, but alas...the hope was let down.

Eeee. Maybe I'll try book 2 because I do like this author a lot. Sighs.

I'll give this 2 stars JUST because some of the side characters and the town. Some cute banter can be found in this tale.

Kendra is 40+ and suddenly finds herself in 1999 and being 19 again. Luckily for her someone spots her in Block Buster and realises that she is a fellow time traveller. See Jordan, also 40+, is 20 now and the thing is it is always -99, he has been there for quite some time and the year never changes, things never move forward. Life sort of just goes on in a longer time loop.

But how are they in -99? Kendra wants back home, Jordan is settled. And romance blossoms between them.

They both have things to learn.

I liked it. I wanted to know how they got there and if they could get back home? Or was it limbo? Were they dead? Maybe not since it is a romance.

Good narration too

Kate Kendrick is having an epically bad day when a glowing Blockbuster catches her eye on the commute home. She could have sworn there was an abandoned building there just yesterday, and didn't Blockbuster go out of business years ago? Curiosity piqued, she steps inside the bustling store and whoosh! She's transported back to the year 1999 with no idea how to get back to her old life.

An offer of marriage by Amy D'Orazio

By: Amy D'Orazio

Narrated by: Elizabeth Grace

Series: The Engaged to Mr Darcy Series

Length: 8 hrs and 47 mins

Release date: 09-24-25

Publisher: Quills & Quartos Publishing

Pride and prejudice variation/audible

Another PP variation, yes please!

Darcy thinks Lizzy accepted him and he is over the moon. But at Rosings things happen, Anne is a monster in this one! Damn she is mad. So Darcy takes Lizzy to London to get away. And she has not told him yet. And there is not really time for it as more and more learn that they are engaged. Also, isnt he kind of nice! The more she learns the harder she falls.

But the drama! Ack the drama, well all know things can not last. So we are left with a mad Anne, a upset Darcy and Lizzy just trying.

Danger too. I wanted to scream at them. Wake up!!

I really like this one. They have to fight for it.

Great narration too

A finer punishment does not exist than if I were to accept him. Elizabeth Bennet—shocked, dismayed, and emotional following Mr Darcy’s offensive proposal in Hunsford parsonage—makes a flippant remark to her friend Charlotte Collins. She observes that, given Mr Darcy’s disdain for her family, accepting him would be the worst punishment imaginable for him, for then he would be forever connected to the very people he so despised. She speaks in jest…but Mrs Collins fears she might be serious.

Mr Darcy leaves Hunsford parsonage following his proposal feeling a measure of joy at his beloved’s acceptance of his proposal. Alas, his news is received less than joyously at Rosings Park and he fears Elizabeth might be in some danger. With the help of his cousin, he hurries her out of Kent and to the safety of her relations in London.

Caught in a grave misunderstanding, whereby Mr Darcy thinks she has accepted him, Elizabeth soon finds that Mr Darcy is a vastly different man than she had previously understood him to be. A man that she likes…a man that she might perhaps come to love.

As the days of happy courtship pass in London, the secret of how she really felt the night of his proposal lingers. When the truth comes out, Mr Darcy feels he has been made an object of ridicule, and Elizabeth fears she might have lost him for good.

I had to check out the novellas too. I also kind of felt it worked well on its own. Yes I have read the two previous books, but there was a nice explanation. But obviously you should start at book 1 because it is so good.

This one takes place under one night as Mallory spies on Alice, the young maid as she disappears into the night and Mallory is sure something is wrong. And then she has a whole adventure as something really sinister is going on.

Drama and danger promised.

But, you call Molotov cocktails Russian?!! Excuse me, we named them after a Russian to kill  Russians with them. Because he was an ass. The end.

A short listen too! I love those

For modern-day detective Mallory Atkinson, being trapped in the body of a Victorian housemaid means overcoming endless obstacles. Her current challenge is winning over the suspicious young parlormaid, Alice. Mallory’s plan starts with teaching the girl to make Molotov cocktails, which is a perfectly valid science experiment and not at all a desperate ploy to gain Alice’s attention. Before the lesson can begin, though, Alice receives a letter that has her slipping off in the night. Concerned for her safety—and naturally curious—Mallory follows.

Mallory finds Alice at what seems like a simple dance hall, watching young men and women flirting and whirling in pretty dresses and dapper suit-coats. But nothing here is what is seems, and what starts as a simple surveillance exercise turns into a full-scale spy mission with Mallory’s boss, Dr. Duncan Gray, at her side. Before the evening is done, those Molotov cocktails are probably going to come in handy.

3/3/2026 Which made-up thing do you badly wish was real?

I have been binging on Stargate Sg1 on netflix and that stargate, now that would be cool. To travel across the galaxy to distant planets. Well it is also scary and I would probably die. But in theory it is really cool.

And dragons would be fantastic, but also scary as they would eat people and set fire to things so we would hunt them down

Anything fantastic would be used for the wrong reason in the end...like magic! I want magic

3/10/2026 If you could have any celebrity be your best friend, who would you pick?

3/17/2026 Do you prefer single narrator, duet/dual narration, full cast, or "graphic audio" audiobooks?
