After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.
Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents--until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae--and their notorious dark desires--ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings. Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?
My thoughts:
I actually started with book 10 or so, fell deeply in love and knew that this was the paranormal romance series for me. So I read book 1, which is a novella (you can get it for free on her website), and then this book. And what I felt then I felt again, she is so good!
At first I was a bit taken aback. Lachlain was crazy, too demanding, a brute, a barbarian, I called him so many names. And with any other book I would have frowned, but somehow Cole made me fall for that dog (as some of Emma's family happily calls the Lycae). I have no idea how she manages it, but he just creeps under your skin and stays there.
Poor Lachlain, tortured, dying, and brought back to life for 150 years. No wonder he was a bit crazed. He was all alpha, so very alpha. He was also later very protective and sometimes the whole mine thing just makes a girl weak in the knees. Then we have Emma, she is no kickass female, she is actually weak and timid. But all women do not need to be kickass. She just does not want conflicts, but little by little this little weakling gains more strength. They are suited for each other.
This is what I want paranormal romance to be like. I am smitten and I like it. The book has plenty of passion, and two people that are so unlikely to fall in love, they are enemies, but they are destined to be together and the road there is not easy.
The whole universe is interesting with many different "creatures" running around, making alliances and waging war against each other.
Conclusion:
Would I recommend this book, yes! Will I read more, I sure will :D

Made me love Paranormal romance again
Cover
Not a fan, but the more I see that other cover, the more I like this one

Hey Blodeuedd! The cover is ugh for me but it's the inside that counts isn't it ;) I so recognize your reaction to Laclain. The first time I read his story it was inbetween Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders books and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter books. I wasn't impressed with Lachlain attitude. A year later I bought the next couple of books in this series and thought; "Why not red book one"...it was instant love the second time around. What was different? Probably me ;) But from that moment each book just added to the addictive feeling. You've got greatness ahead of you...enjoy it *smile*
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I definitely want to start this series.
ReplyDeleteI didn't LOVE this book, but I liked it..and the more I started to read of this series, the more I really, really like it! :)
ReplyDeleteYES, IAD is one great series, one of my all time favorites. I'm kind of jealous that you have so many great books to read for the very first time...
ReplyDeleteAnd the Lykae... *sigh* My favorite males from Kresley's crazy bunch...
I *loved* this book. I can't resist those beastly alpha males. This was the first paranormal romance I read, and it got me hooked on the genre.
ReplyDeleteParanormal romances? Vampires and werewolves? Urgh! Sorry, I left a burner or two unattended in my kitchen, I really must gooooooooooo! ;)
ReplyDeleteSpeaking seriously...
If I go mad I might try this one. I go mad pretty often.
My friend just started reading this and she seems a bit lost. She hasn't read the novella yet so that could be part of the reason why. I haven't read it yet, although I do have a copy.
ReplyDeleteI have the original cover, but I'm liking this one more!
♥Isalys
B,
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my all time favorite series. I am so glad you are reading it. :)
There is only one out of the whole bunch that was a little *ehh* for me and I can't remember the name of it - just that it had a ghost in it.
But the series as a whole is fabulous. I have them on my keeper shelf and look forward to each new installment. :)
M
When you say you fell in love that sold me!
ReplyDeleteawww, i'm glad this one made you like pnr again :)
ReplyDeleteLeontine
ReplyDeleteNot the best cover, but the US one is totally ugh, and he looks like a vamp o_O
I don't know why I fell, cos honestly at one time I though "yo! Hands off asshole!" And then I melted, something just made me swoon. Perhaps it was book 10 that helped on they way :)
Irena
I do recommend it :D
Mandi
I did like book 10 better but then this was the first book in the series, and for that it was good :=)
Dani
ReplyDeleteThey sure are, hihi, oh my ;) Then again I did like, the venom guy. Great I forgot his name, Demon from the Dark. And I sure have a lot to look forward to

Ana
Lol, cool down. You do not need to read it ;( Though it's the 2nd best paranormal I have ever read. Right after book 10 in this series
Isalys
ReplyDeleteSome things were explained there, and since it is only 100 pages or so then it would be good to have a look :)
Michelle
That is actually the only book that I am meh about too. I have read all the other blurbs and are all for it, but then the ghost one sounds...I just do not like ghosts
Staci

Carrie
Pnr is good, especially Cole :D
Wow, that's definitely not the cover on my copy of the book! O.O
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful series, i'm partial to vampires and alpha males.
ReplyDeleteI like the UK cover better than the US cover. This was not my favorite book in the series but it was enough to make me want to read more an wow does it get GOOD. :)
ReplyDeletenot a fan of the cover either but you got me excited to start reading this series.
ReplyDeleteSuuurrreeee! Make me all happy about not being the only one who reads series in the middle and you go and read it from book 1! *crosses arms* I'm appalled! I'm also interested in this series. Yep... they are all going on my wishlist. I may even read them in order! O.o
ReplyDeleteSounds good! I'm going to check out the novella and start with that one.
ReplyDeleteSee this happens when you start late in a series, and not because your lost but because you love it and have to have more.lol. Great review! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnother paranormal romance series that I need to read!
ReplyDeleteI kind of like the cover too.
Glad to see you are discovering Kresley Cole's IAD series! I'm not a big PNR fan myself, but this series is an exception! ANd I loved A Hunger Like No Other, Lachlain and Emma were a great pair :-D Now you just made me want to re-read it! lol :-)
ReplyDeleteNo Rest for the Wicked is another one I love in the series, can't wait to hear your thoughts about it!
It sounds like a fun book. It's been ages since I've read a PNR book that I liked but I haven't read anything by Cole yet. Maybe I'll give this series a try.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! I think the cover is kinda neat.
ReplyDeleteBrandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog
I was really put off with this book at first too! I wasn't sure I would ever grow to like Lachlain, he was just so pushy, but he definitely grew on me and then of course I got addicted and had to read the other books:)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great when a book makes you love a certain genre again?! I've felt the same with certain PNR books after getting tried of the same old same old.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the cover either, but the romance sounds good!
Chris
ReplyDeleteNope it sure is not
Naida
It has totally won me over
FV
I had book 10 at the back of my head throughout the book and just kept thinking she is good now, and just think how much better she will get :D
And such a better cover than the US one
VV
It's better than this other cover, have a look ;)
Melissa
LOL! But you know, to make you happy again ;) I have book 11 waiting, but not book 2, so who knows, maybe I will go crazy and read out of order again
Yvonne
Do that, and I hope you like it
I like the series a lot too, nice you are starting it/getting on with it again. Hope you enjoy the rest as well. Have to love those crazy Valkyries, especially Nixx.
ReplyDeleteMelissa
ReplyDeleteI am happy for the late start, so much to look forward too, yay :D
Misha
I recommend it, highly and all that jazz :D
Stella
Most pnr books are just ok for me, I mean good to read, but do they make me read like crazy to finish it while loving it..nah, not so much. And then this series came along.
Then I certainly want wicked
Simcha
If you asked me what pnr books to try then I would certainly say Cole's :)
Brandi
It kind of grows on you
Jenny
I just can't explain it, and I am so glad I wasn't the only one. Cos he was horrid, and then, smack, i love him
Missie
It's all vamps and blah blah, ok so yes this book has vamps ;) But it all just feels like my kind of world
Aurian
ReplyDeleteLol, oh those valkyries. They are so fun. I just loved how Cassandra described how they had acted while driving through the Scottish village
This does sound like a fab series to get hooked on!
ReplyDeleteAmused
ReplyDeleteThe best series to get hooked on :D
I've seen some good reviews for books in this series and sounds like a great paranormal romance.
ReplyDeleteYou know the pairing of the alpha male with the weaker woman is not my cup of tea; however, it is closer to a realistic relationship than pairing an alpha male with a strong woman. In real life the latter doesn't ever work - but makes for good fireworks in a novel!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear that you really love this series! I've heard a lot of great things about Kresley Cole and I have officially added book one to my TBR list! It's good to know I can read it for free at the authors webside. :-) Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteJenny
ReplyDeleteIt sure sucked me in, I honestly can't say what makes them so much better than other pnr books
Stephanie
They both struggle to get on top ;) Lol, but yes I know what you mean, I do like a strong woman, but it is impossible not to like Emmaline. She is wonderful, and truthful too. I am not kickass, honestly I would be crying in a corner somewhere if something like this happened
Deanna
I think the novella was there. Mine says giveaway, so I must have gotten it as a freebie or won it. But someone said you can read it on her site :)
Sounds like a good series and I actually like the cover or maybe it's the coloring I like.
ReplyDeletewow! Its that good, huh? I gotta get cracking and read this series =D
ReplyDeleteDarlene
ReplyDeleteIt grows on you :)
Larissa
Yes you should :D
OOo This looks awesome. New one for me!
ReplyDeleteLiz
ReplyDeleteIt was so very awesome :D Loved it and I knew it will get even better
