My thoughts:

This is why I do not like writing review of novellas. They are so short, what can I say?

So Fawna (yes I do feel you have to read the trilogy first) and Simon meet at a fair. Yes they know each other from before of course. She is weird and wounded and he is reckless (ha, well duh ;) There is no love between them but there is something.

She needs to let go, and he needs to live.

Conclusion:

A short story, I do prefer the longer books as we see the world more clearly then. Still, I love this series.

Discussion Point

I have been wondering, ok I wondered yesterday, should I mention DNFs? They do not happen that often. Even the most boring books can still have something compelling in them. But yesterday I started and finished a book, because honestly, I was bored by the end of page 1. I could not soldier on. The sentences were also way too long, I had no time to breathe, and yes page 1 still! I have no time to force myself to read books anymore, my TBR pile is killing me as it is.

So mention or not?

Review: Head Rush - Carolyn Crane

My thoughts:

I am so weird, I wanted patiently for the print to come out. Even though book 2 was this biggest OMG! No you didn't!!!!! of last year. And what do I do when the print is out...much much later. Yes I buy an ebook *groans, I am an idiot*. But to my defense I could not read ebooks before and now the library has an e-reader. Still idiot here.

But at last I read it and I was on the edge of my seat all way through. Justine thinks Packard killed Avery. She does not know Otto had Sophia change her memories and now Justine and Otto are getting married! Noooooo!

Still I do not hate Otto because in the end everyone is out of their mind in this series. Justine thinks she could die any moment. Otto is..well insane and powerhungry but but, he loves her! I just can't hate him. 

And Justine, she has doubts but she loves him..or? I kept wanting her to remember what she shared with Packard. Still it is weird that I still like Otto more but still want her to be with Packard? Yes that is how loopy you get from this crazy book.

Conclusion:

What a ride! Thrilling! Filled with crazies and just a great ending to this series.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men—one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

My thoughts:

Crane does have quite the imagination. Justine the hypochondriac is fighting crime by putting fear into people. She is not alone in this but have others like her around her. And then there are the high caps who have real powers, not like Justine who got them from someone else. The high caps have all sorts of powers like telepathy to forming stone. The world is fascinating and the general populace does not know the high caps exist, some believe, some don't.

I would love to go on and talk about the end now but I will hold it in. Justin is, I do not know how to describe her really because she is not your ordinary heroine. The power of zinging out her fear keeps her from going under. And she still battles her fear of dying by the disease that killed her mother, and just worrying about everything. She is not a kick-ass heroine in that sense, she is more the  shadow behind the corner that might be out to get you.

The men then. Justine is dating Otto, a hypochondriac like her but he is also a high cap and mayor of the town. He is, I do not know, I was pretty much all over him in book 2 but in this book I slowly switched team. To Packard, oh yes the former crime boss who was imprisoned in his deli and then helped his merry band of Disillusionists to fight crime. Here was just so nice and just let her be her. Team kebab it is.

But now I really need to address the end, omg omg omg omg omg omg! I knew what people were saying, that there was some huge cliffie and therefore I waited a bit with reading the book. Now I have finally read it and yes the end just hit me over the head, and then it kept hitting me until I went into shock. It was..epic, what a genius ending.

Still I do not want to scare you, it was not one of those cliffhangers that make you pull your hair out and hate the world for not having the next book. It was a different sort of cliffhanger that left me in shock, but I can wait since the end was just that, an ending you could live with (while screaming inside of course).

I do realise that I have said nothing about the story. Ok, there are doubts of what they are doing is right. There are people killing high caps. Justine getting into her relationship with Otto and all that jazz.

Conclusion.
I am still pretty much dazed from reading the book. It was truly one of the better endings out there. This is such a different sort of UF so give it a go.

It went from good to mind-blowing those last few pages. You better just read it

The Blushing Bounder by Meljean Brook - An Iron Seas novella of 15,000 words: The search for a killer puts Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth's life in danger and her assistant, Constable Newberry, in the line of fire. But Newberry faces a danger of another kind: to his heart, by the woman forced to marry him. What will it take for this prudish bounder to convince his wife to stay? 

My thoughts:

Yay, I love this world. It was just such a good short story, it truly worked. It takes place before the Iron Duke and we learn a bit more about Newberry and how incredibly silly and prudish those New Worlders are. There is a bit of danger and tension since this is not a happy marriage (but it could be, I shall not say anything more). Oh those silly people who just can't say what they feel.

Anyway great story. You will not be disappointed. You do not need to have read the book either since it takes place before it, but it sure will make you want it.

Vixen by Jill Myles - A shifter novella of 15,000 words: Miko's denied her were-fox nature for far too long and turned her back on her vixen heritage. But when she meets two very sexy cat-shifters, she has to decide if she truly wants to give up on her frisky side, or embrace it. Because the were-fox in her doesn't want to choose between both men...it wants them both. 

My thoughts:

This was the steamy story and Myles sure knows how to write a good steamy story. Miko meets two sexy shifters and she sure wants to play with them. Even in this one there is a bit of danger (I will not say more). Miko was fun and I liked her vixen nature and of course the guys were just yummy.

A short sexy story that made me want to read more from this world. I do hope Myles writes more.

Kitten-tiger & the Monk by Carolyn Crane - A Disillusionists novella of 20,000 words: Sophia Sidway, Midcity's most dangerous memory revisionist, seeks out the mysterious Monk in the wasteland beneath the Tangle turnpike, hoping for redemption...but it turns out that the Monk is not all that pious, and the turnpike is no turnpike at all.

My thoughts:

I have not read book 2 yet (I am afraid of the cliffhanger) but I could still read this short story. So even if you have read neither of the books you can read this one easily.

I felt that Sophia was such a bitch at first, but I guess I forgave her at the end. But it was hard, still I learnt more when I read on. But poor Robert, he was just so sad and screwed up. Though it made it a good story.

Conclusion:

A great anthology. Great stories :D Please write more ;)

Plot:

My thoughts:

I can say one thing, and that is original. What a great use of powers and magic. So strange, so freaky.

Justine, oh she is nice, a crazy hypochondriac, but that is not her fault. Though of course in real life I am sure we would not make it as friend, at least not before her zing. When she got zinged she no longer have to constantly worry that she is gonna die from something. But then pre-Justine is fun to read about too.

The crew, nice crew, but who cares about the crew when there is a boss, and oh what a boss. I liked Packard from the start, then I had my doubts and then I went all rawr! There is also police chief Otto, who I kind of admired from a distance and had theories about.

Oh the magic, Justine gives the bad guys they are after all her own dark thoughts about illness. She is free and they are doomed. There are no big action scenes instead they infiltrate the lives of these people, try to be friends with them and then go into attack mode time after time. How to describe in the end, it is not kick-ass UF, it is mental warfare UF. And I like it.

Hard book to put down, and it even made me giggle.

My final thoughts and recommendation.

I hear book 2 has a big cliffhanger, scary! This one ended good with things to come, but nothing that I went crazy over. I of course really want to know what happens, but I I am kind of scared of that cliffhanger now, perhaps I should wait until book 3 is out...if I can make it, cos come on, the thing Packard said at the end, damn, I want to read more!

Ok where was I, yes I do recommend this series. It is certainly original, and so far there are only people with magical abilities around.
