Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post here on Rainy Day Ramblings where Rainy discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.
This week's conversation starter:
May 9th: Blog commenting: do you comment altruistically or are there strings attached?
An interesting question. Sure when I comment on my favorite blogs I want them to visit me back. When I head out and try new blogs I do not expect this because you do not know how they roll.
It would be kind of boring if you spent ages commenting on a blog, but they never even once visited your blog. I get that people do not always have the time, but that also makes me wonder. Do they ever visit other blogs? That is the fun part with blogging! Reading other reviews, finding out which new books are out, drooling over books to come etc etc. Connecting with your fellow readers :D
I guess there are strings attached then. I mean, if you do not care what I say on my blog, then why would you care what I say on your blog?
I am a spaceball though. I was sure I was commenting on this one blog, and then suddenly my feed was flooded with posts, and I was all, whaaat? These are all new, but old! Uhoh. So I asked and she said I had not been there for months. Which shocked me, cos I was sure I had been! Too many blogs for my brain, lol.

Luci in February
I don't comment on that many blogs anymore - mostly mutual follows, but at this point, after so many years, it feels more like checking in with my extended circle of friends and acquaintances.
ReplyDeleteI get that :) I feel like that too
DeleteTo a point I am fishing for comments. But I am also looking for new friends and book ideas all the time. And I enjoy sharing the feels; I know new bloggers especially are always a bit shocked in a good way when that first comment comes their way and often times I have been that person.
ReplyDeleteWe are the same then, sure one is always fishing. And I want to find new friends :D
DeleteI think I'm kind of like you. I really don't expect anything back when I leave a comment but when I don't hear anything at all from someone for a long period of time I begin to wonder. . .
ReplyDeleteSame, I do begin to wonder
DeleteI guess it's a little of both for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll comment on a post/blog I like and not expect anything in return but if the blogger never interacts I might give up because that's the best part of blogging to me.
I'm not a fan of blogs that want you to read THEIR blog but don't bother with anyone else's. But I also understand that my blog might not be for them and I don't want them to comment just out of obligation.
For What It's Worth
Someone who never interacts at all, what is the fun in that? I love interacting.
DeleteTotally! Those who leave links and more and then check back even though you comment. They are just gathering blogs
I'm also in the both camp. It's nice if blogs visit back, but I do have a few favorites that have never commented on mine. If I really enjoy a blog, I'll go back no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya
DeleteI have strings. lol Not all the time but if I visit a blog a lot of times and they NEVER bother to even come say hi...then I'll probably stop visiting. There are so many social bloggers and I'd rather have that kind of relationship than one talking to a empty void.
ReplyDeleteAck on the visits. I had that happen with two who's feeds had gone bad and I thought they were just taking long blogging breaks but nope I just wasn't seeing new posts. Oops!
Oh yes I would never continue to visit for a year if they never came back. Then I have to freaking love that blog
DeleteI am glad it hasn't only happened to me then ;)
I tend to visit the ones that visit me and do go to some that don't :)
ReplyDelete:=)
DeleteI love visiting blogs, especially if they've taken the time to stop by mine. Although, in the last few months, I've had some things going on so I'm way behind in both blog visits and replying to blog comments. I think I'm starting to get back on track!
ReplyDeleteSimply Angela
I get that, sometimes life do get in the way
DeleteI look forward to the comments and I am happy to return the favour. I believe that this one of the best part about blogging.
ReplyDeleteSo true
DeleteI too enjoy commenting for the back and forth. That's why there are some blogs where I will comment all the time because we have a rapport.

Exactly :)
DeleteI do have strings because I do expect the occasional comment back. I understand folks are busy or have real life stuff, but an occasional visit back would be nice. But I also don't want people to feel obliged to visit, either.
ReplyDeleteI get that
DeleteIt's always a good feeling when you comment on a blog or find one you really like, and they reciprocate by visiting, but if I like the blog enough I'll keep visiting even if they never do. At least I think I will lol. Maybe not forever. But I think by and large we all want comments back. :)
ReplyDeleteThe community's the thing. :)
Totally :D If there was no community it would not be the same thing. And certainly not as fun
DeleteGreat post and I have to say I have similar thoughts to yourself. Yikes visiting though can do serious damage to my purse. I enjoy visiting and seeing what others read. And of course I enjoy people visiting me.
ReplyDeleteSuch damage, I want SO many books
DeleteI quite agree with you too
ReplyDeleteI don't expect much back but I do like to comment when I have something to say - even if its just to say a book sounds good.
ReplyDeleteThat is enough for me :)
DeleteI always try to comment back. If I notice I haven't seen a favorite blogger I will visit their blog. I also randomly visit blogs and don't expect a visit back..however it makes me happy when it happens.
ReplyDeleteI like when I make random hops, sadly they do not happen that often. Most of the time I just decide to visit bloggers who have commented on other blogs
DeleteWhat a good question! And a good answer.
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteNo strings attached but I comment on blogs that follow and comment on my blog. I don't know if those are strings but in this community, reciprocity is important. There needs to be an engagement between readers and bloggers at the minimum. But that's just me. :D
ReplyDeleteWell put, I guess I do the same then :)
DeleteI try to stop by and comment on blogs from time to time (no strings), especially when they are talking about books of interest to me. I do miss the connection as I mostly stopped blogging. I still love to gush about books. :) And I like getting comments on my reviews, just for the purpose of discussion.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting discussion. I think it is a mix. I mean, I only comment on blogs I genuinely want to read. There are some blogs I visit and comment on, and they never comment back on mine, but that's okay. I still enjoy reading their blog and giving my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI try to stop by blogs who comment on my blog. I agree with you 100%, that's part of the fun. I don't expect people to be a 1:1. I know that things happen in life (like you and your new baby, squeee!) Congrats. I visit you blog when I can and I assume you visit mine when you can. :-)
