Best of 2019

Best of List are SO hard. I feel bad for not talking about all my best ones when I rated them the same. I always want to do a best genre post too, but that is so hard! But I will try and some genres will just get more then

Best Book

The Brightest Fell by Seanan McGuire together with a 3 Anne Bishop were the best books of the year. No question asked about it.

Best UF Books
My first McGuire in Audio and I liked it! My first Briggs in audio and I liked it! I also really like Price's series in audio these days. And Part-time gods were better than book 2 so yay

Best Series/audiobook
I listened to all but Lake Silence this year and all were 5s or 4s. Alexandra Harris is AMAZING as a narrator. These are so much better in audio.

Best Fantasy
City of Lies was this great political one. Priest of Lies was a great follow-up, The Defiant Heir hit just the right spot and Chaos Mage was a great end to a saga.

Best World
All those things we take for granted in some books are turned on its head here and then it looks absurd. Which really says something about us. It's a world where women are men and men are women.

Best Re-read
All the feels

Best YA
AIDS, first love. Punch to the guts

Best Surprise
I was told I would not like this one cos I do not like grimdark, but hey this one was amazing. I guess it is just rapey main characters I do not like then.

Best PNR
Singh!

Best Fiction
Just as Fiction should be

Best Sci.fi
Sanderson is always great

Best WTF
Srsly, wtf

Best Short story
Mcguire sure is amazing

Best Horror
Very strange, the end could have been better though

Best Contemporary romance
Laughing out loud

Best Sci.fi fantasy
This genre is so hard to put a finger on. Great mix of things

Books that also should be here.
Other people's houses by Abbi Waxman
The bride test by Helen Hoang
Aurora Blazing by Jessie Mihalik

Best Historical romance
The Wallflower wager by Tessa Dare

Most memorable narrators of this year
Alexandra Harris
Justine Eyre

  1. I agree about best lists - my list starts out pretty long and then I scratch things off to make it manageable. I always feel bad about the ones I scratched off. I haven't read any books on your list, I'm sad to say. Happy New Year!

  2. Nice list! And THANK YOU for the late rec on Heidi - I listened to that and LOVED IT! It made my favorite list even though I'd already finished the post.

I never did listen to more of the Keri Arthur books even though I really liked the first one. I was put off that we didn't stay in the same people, but maybe I'll try more.

    Happy 2020!!

  8. Yes, it is agony to make these lists at times, but also fabulous to revisit in memory all the beloved books of the year. Love how you broke it down by genre and narrator. I still have several of these I want to read and there are a handful that were great reads/listens for me, too.

  9. Mercy Thompson is so good on audio, right? Love Alexandra Harris' narration of The Others. It really enhances the stories. As you know, I loved The Wallflower Wager, too! Wolf Rain as well. It is hard to narrow it down, right?
