I liked this. It was a what happens after the big battle, what happens to heroes when their work is done?

Well they disband their group. And the leader becomes a hermit and resurrects her dead husband time and time again. Even though it really is against the law. That was a bit of a dilemma, I mean yes she steals bones from dead people so he can live, but I mean they are dead! They do not need them. But then every time she uses that magic she looses time of her own life. Soon she will be dead because she has given him too much.

25 years later and Kreya is the hermit, her husband lives from time to time. And she sets out to seek her former companions because she needs help. I'd like to say what her friends are up too, but isn't that spoiling it? They have all gone on with their lives...

I liked the magic. Using animal bones for bursts of speed, for making a wagon run, for so much! They can read the future in bones, and Kreya for example can make contraptions from bones, and the things sort of live then.

And there will be a new adventure, and new fights. Our heroes must be 45-55 by now. I do wish it was felt more. Like they, they got a lot older. Like this is a fantasy world, shouldn't they be senior citizens by now. But yes, yay older heroes.

I enjoyed the book. She writes good fantasy. Always new interesting worlds and magic systems.

Soneela is a great narrator! If I have to say something bad then it is that her voice is almost too soothing, lol. But I always like her narrations, she is great with voices and she does fantasy so well

'

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived.

Since then, Kreya, the group’s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.

She’d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.

But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don’t rest in peace after all.

Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn’t stop just because someone once said, “the end.”

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog. Have you ever thought of quitting blogging? What made you reconsider the idea?

No! Though sure, maybe a thought here and there, but then I remember at once why I do not. For the community, to talk about books, to share books I like. No, I would not want to stop blogging. I keep going even though it got a lot harder with a little kid, with building a house, with going back to work after maternity leave (which I was on for 2,5 years ;)

I NEED TO TALK ABOUT BOOKS!

Carole's Monday: Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Author: Patricia Briggs
Title: Blood Bound
(Mercy Thompson #2)
Genre: UF, Fantasy, Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 335
Published: January 30th 2007
Where I Got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
Mechanic Mercy Thompson has friends in low places - and in dark ones. And now she owes one of them a favor. Since she can shapeshift at will, she agrees to act as some extra muscle when her vampire friend Stefan goes to deliver a message to another of his kind.

But this new vampire is hardly ordinary - and neither is the demon inside of him.

Review:
This had been on super sale near Xmas time so I couldn't resist buying it. I liked book 1 a lot and I like Mercy so I wanted to try book 2.

The story follows Mercy Thompson who is a mechanic and a shifter. One night, one of her friends is cashing in a favor. He wants some extra muscle when he goes to see a fellow vamp. However, this vamp is hardly ordinary....and neither is the demon inside of him.

Poor Mercy. Girl just wants to run her shop and go to bed at a decent time. Love Stefan but I would've hung up on him. LOLL. A vamp with a demon inside of him? NOOO thanks.

I was hooked from page 1. I really couldn't put this down. I was curious about what was going to happen next. I had no idea what they were going to.

There is a love triangle going on, BUT it doesn't overwhelm the plot and take it over. It works and who wouldn't love Mercy? She is kick-ass! She is flawed and has her issues which all makes you love her even more. I do worry this love triangle may take over later on? We'll have to see. Still not a fan of Samuel. He needs to go take a walk. LOL.

Now...I will say that I didn't like this one as much as book 1. It was good and I was hooked, but I wasn't AS hooked. I was still dying to know what was going to happen next, but I wasn't as involved as I was with the other one. Maybe it was because I did the ebook this time around? Book 1 I did audio and that narrator was fantastic. So maybe I am now spoiled.

Overall, I can't wait for book 3. Maybe I'll do the narrator next time. Hahaha but ya....I liked it. Not AS much as book 1, but I did like it. A crazy twist and fun characters (minus Samuel) and now demons. Scary. Curious to see what happens in book 3. Love this world and I love Mercy!

Discussion: Carrie Pilby

This month Carole and I are reviewing, Carrie Pilby.

I am in pink and Carole in red.

Title:  Carrie Pilby

Genre: Comedy, Drama
Running Time: 1h 38 min
Rating: Not Rated
Released:  4 April 2017

A person of high intelligence struggles to make sense of the world as it relates to morality, relationships, sex, and leaving her apartment.

TRAILER:

DISCUSSION:

I had my eye on this one for quite some time, and when it was time to find a movie I thought why not :D

I’m glad we picked this movie! I liked it a lot!

Me too, I liked the characters, and story itself. It truly worked, it was weird, it was good.

Yessss! I adore the characters. Esp Carrie and her therapist. Not the professor. Boo to him!

I know he would be bad news, but it just got worse. Ugh him!

I knoooow! I was like okay...ew he’s a creep…and then BAM. Who does that??????? Asshat indeed!

And the book! Ugh him. But yes, I liked Carrie a lot, she was great! And her therapist was just so calm, she totally needed that.

At first, I was annoyed with Carrie but when we got to know her more and understand her I grew to adore her. I want to be her friend!

Me too! Though she is way too smart for me, I’d feel a bit stupid. That girl was smart

I’d have to keep google up alllll the time to keep up with her lolllll. She is super smart but screw her dad for tossing her at college that young. Too young to be alone with her dad across the sea. Poor thing.

I did wonder about that, sure Harvard is good, but couldn’t she have gone to Oxford or Cambridge!

Right??? Strange that they picked Harvard...unless she was being a teen drama queen and was all “NO I HATE LONDON! I WANNA GO TO THE US!!!!!” LOL

Might be that, and if she was angry at her dad. So she went to Harvard and lived her own life. I had to check the book on GR to see if I could learn more. If they had changed anything but dunno

OH? This is based off a book? I had no idea!

Yes I remembered it from IMDB, but ugh, one of the covers is so not her. Check out out!

Maybe it can be a future book ;) We can compare/contrast!! LOLL I am curious for sure.

The grade is not that good, hmmm, I wonder if the movie is better!?

Who knows!!! We’ll have to see ;) hehehe. But I am curious. I think the only drawback was that there was some missing info and a couple plot-holes. Like...can a 14 year old go to Harvard and live alone? IDK. I just need more info. And I want to find out what happens now.

Well, I am sure they have someone to check in on her, genius needs to go to school to

See? That is the info I need! Like was there an agreement? Did she have to do extra testing? Did she have to get a VISA or something? How does the therapist know her dad? Are they friends? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

Lol, that is a lot of questions! I am not sure even the book covers that. It seems to be fluffier

Mmmm maybe. LOLLL. I guess that is what makes the story so good. You want more.

True, like what happens in a year!? I do want her settled

That scene when she prayed broke my heart and gave me a tear! Poor thing finally realized how much she wants to be happy and loved and she wants more than her lonely life. I want her to be happy and have everything!

Same. All the best for her :) And yes I would recommend it. It is not one of those blew you away, it is just a real movie, fun and just good! I can’t think today

It really makes you think. Life is not black and white. It’s all crazy shades of grey. It’s a good movie to just chill and watch with some wine. Like what I did. LOLL!!

I will throw in rainy day and wine, yes, good fit

It’s perfect for that! I want to watch it again. Haha. I highly recommend it.

Omg we picked something good! I have hope for this year

Me too! :D

The end?

The end!

Sure, I could watch it, but it was not that funny. Rebel was made to try too hard and Anne was too cool.

Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire

ebook, 208 pages

Published January 12th 2021 by Tordotcom

Series: Wayward Children #6

Fantasy

Own

It was good, like the rest of the series, but it felt like it missed some magic. Maybe cos we didn't visit the school at all?.

Regan goes through a door to a land of centaurs, kelpies, unicorns and more. A land that says a human is there to save or doom them.

But yes not a lot happens in a way, she meets some centaurs, she befriends them (I still wonder about male centaurs, like what do they do? Sit around and spend money?) And then she must save the land, and well, the door always comes back....

I liked it, but yes it did lack some magic and explanations.

Regan loves, and is loved, though her school-friend situation has become complicated, of late.

When she suddenly finds herself thrust through a doorway that asks her to "Be Sure" before swallowing her whole, Regan must learn to live in a world filled with centaurs, kelpies, and other magical equines―a world that expects its human visitors to step up and be heroes.

But after embracing her time with the herd, Regan discovers that not all forms of heroism are equal, and not all quests are as they seem…

Hollow Empire by Sam Hawke

Paperback, 560 pages

Published December 1st 2020 by Tor Books

Series: Poison War #2

Fantasy

Own

I liked the book, but I did not think it was as great as book 1. I do hope there will be more (it looks bad on that end, a shame really cos it book ends, not with a cliffhanger, more like a dagger over everyone. It might fall now, or in a few years.)

Two years has passed. There was a siege. Now they have moved on. Jovan is still working in the shadows, I do like him, he is trying his best to save this damn city, and no one is listening! Because something is still going on, there is still an enemy coming for them.

Kalina, Jovan's sister, is, ok now when I think about it what did she do? She tried to snoop around. Maybe I do not like her? Why can't I remember what she was up to? Weird.

Terrorism is bringing to city to its knees. Who are the bad guys? Who is behind it? And then a bloody cliffhanger. All is well...for now, but they are still out there so, I do hope she writes more.

I liked it, but it did feel slower than book 1

Poison was only the beginning.... The deadly siege of Silasta woke the ancient spirits, and now the city-state must find its place in this new world of magic. But people and politics are always treacherous, and it will take all of Jovan and Kalina's skills as proofer and spy to save their country when witches and assassins turn their sights to domination.

How do you organize your bookshelves (real and virtual)?

My bookshelves at home, sigh! Well they are in that room that is still a mess after having lived here for 6 months. So a mess!

But I have tried organizing by color once, it was cool, but I could not find anything. So I do it by author, and I try to keep some genres close to each other.

My virtual bookshelves on goodreads are mostly genre tags, and different categories of books I want (in the right order), and library books.

I keep it simple

Summary:

THERE COMES A TIME IN A LADY'S LIFE

The Earl of Swartingham is in a quandary. Having frightened off two secretaries, Edward de Raaf needs someone who can withstand his bad temper and boorish behavior.

WHEN SHE MUST DO THE UNTHINKABLE . . .

When Anna becomes the earl's secretary, it would seem that both their problems are solved. But when she discovers he plans to visit the most notorious brothel in London, she sees red-and decides to assuage her desires . . .

Review:
Picked this up because 1) it matches a square on my challenge bingo sheet and 2) that dress is sooo pretty and 3) I was curious to see how she becomes his secretary

We follow Anna Wren who has been a widow for a few years and the Earl of Swarthingham. Anna is nearly crushed by an arrogant man on horseback and then she realizes her financials are crumbling. She decides she needs a job to help. The Earl is in a quandary. He has frightened off two secretaries and no one wants to take the job because no one can withstand his bad temper and boorish behavior. Walks in Anna. She takes the job and everything seems okay until she discovers he plans to visit the most notorious brothel in London.

Very unlikely that any Earl would ever, ever hire a woman during this town, but he is not an a-typical bro and he is a jerk-face soooo I will allow it and I liked it.

The beginning started fine and I enjoyed it. Anna was fun and even the jerk-face Earl was fun. However...I got really bored with their romance about halfway. I will admit that I started skimming. The sexual tension had me yawning. Which is weirrrrd because I did like the two of them and they seemed to work together well. But that is that. Work. I did not feel and believe their chemistry.

And then the brothel parts happened. Sighs. I get her getting jealous. For sure. But her going all the way to London, talks with a whore, and then puts on a mask and goes to the Earl's room to have smexy times with him. WHAT? How dangerous! How silly!

And of course he finds out. Duh. I really didn't understand why we needed the brothel scenes. It seemed unnecessary. They were already lusting over each other and working together.

I feel like there was too much shoved into this and the modern language used here and there really bugged me.

Sighs. Not for me in the end.

I loved our characters, but I didn't love them and their chemistry. Plus there were too many modern notions and languages that made it hard for me to like. I'll stamp this with 2 stars.

Audio: The Bachelor by Jessica Clare

Book 6 in the Wyoming Cowboy series

Narrated by Abby Craden

Publication date Mar 16, 2021

Running time 7 hrs 15 min

Contemporary romance

To review

Ugh, Layla had the worst mum! I really have to start with that, the worst mum!

Layla bids on a bachelor during a bachelor caution, because she knows her friends need the money for her charity. Oh and the bachelor is beyond dreamy. Even if she would want a second date that is real she knows she wont stand a chance. She is nerdy, a virgin, and has a horrible mum. Awww, poor Layla, she was so great! And I wanted others to see that too. Her horrible mother really brought her self esteem down.

Jack is just doing it for charity. He is sweet, and what more do I need to say. He is sweet! He falls for her, they have more dates, and live happily ever after.

There is some drama concerning her mother (that horrible person!) I wanted Layla to cut her off, and will she? You have to listen and see.

I liked this one. Clare writes wonderful and sweet cowboy stories. Happiness, a tad bit of drama and great people.

I have listened to Abby before and I enjoy her narrations. She does them well, and she is great with cowboy stories.

Jack Watson doesn't want anything to do with the dating scene in Painted Barrel, Wyoming, but when his sister-in-law guilts him into joining a bachelor auction, Jack can't say no to a charity event. He's not totally heartless. And if all the winner wants is an extra ranch hand for a few days, he can do that. Of course, Jack changes his mind as soon as he meets the winner, shy Layla. As the local accountant, Layla isn't used to being noticed by men. She's sure not the type to bid on a bachelor. But when she tells her mom she's bidding on someone she has a crush on-and her mom shows up to check-she has no choice but to offer for the gruff cowboy. It's for a good cause after all . . . Neither one of them thought the auction would be a success. But Layla finds it hard to keep her hands off the cowboy, and Jack falls for her sweet smile and wild sense of humor. True love should run smoothly, right? Except Layla's got a secret, and Jack's right in the line of fire. Does she risk everything for her Valentine cowboy or does she betray those closest to her? Contains mature themes.

Kisses and scandal

Lady Philomena is the daughter of a Duke, and she is crushing on a footman, who is Irish too, I mention this cos it felt very Downton Abbey. She likes him, he likes her, but oh no he is a footman! And has secrets. Yeah, he should have come clean, I wanted to hit him over the head, not cool.

There is some romance, some danger and a happily ever after. Because she does not take no for an answer.

Counterfit scandal

Bridget was in debtor's prison, now she is out and want to see her son again. Oh and her missing lover shows up too. So there is the search for their son, and them falling in love, and some danger since he is a spy. I quite liked it.

How to brew a perfect kiss

Like with the previous novella, I can't see how these fit into the survivors. I am sure they do, but how? Hmm. Like bigger than just meeting someone.

Anyway, Raeni meets Sawyer, there is lust. She is on the run (since this is a novella it is dealt with quickly at the end, and I do wonder what happens afterwards, is she truly safe?) Short and sweet. Happy endings for everyone.

Victoria Aston narrates as always and she does it well. I always enjoy her narrations

Kisses and Scandal: Lady Philomena is the sister of the Duke of Mayne. She’s beautiful and sought-after, but she’s made the mistake of falling in love with… the footman. James Finnegan loves his lady but has a secret that won’t only break Philomena’s heart. It just might endanger her life.

Counterfeit Scandal : Now that Bridget Lavery is free from debtor’s prison, she wants to reunite with the son she had to give up. Caleb Harris is a man with a price on his head. Before he left for the war, he and Bridget had a passionate affair. Finding her again means everything to him, but loving her might just be too perilous for either of them.

How to Brew a Perfect Kiss: Raeni Sawyer is penniless and alone in a foreign country. When she finds a job at a coffee shop on Bond Street, she hopes it's the beginning of a new life. Thomas Gaines is intrigued by his new server—until she spills coffee all over him. Despite her clumsiness, he sees her potential to be more. But will Raeni's treacherous past ruin their bright future?

I had a slow start when I accidentally missed something, so a few weeks later I went back and perfect. Though, like some have mentioned, why is there a dog on the cover? He has a cat btw.

Mary is 37, loving life, she has her own shop, good friends (though she does have this really horrid judgmental mother who is all you are 37! You will die alone!).

John works and works, he is also seen as aloof, cold, judgy. But he really is none of those things.

They go on a blind date, things goes horrible, John blurts out the worst thing ever. But they run into each other, time after time, become friends. And omg, never gets that they totally both want each other. He thinks she is too posh for him, she thinks he believes she is too old for him.

It was fun, cute, even if I did want to shout at them to just do something! But after that first date, who could blame them.

Good narrator, I felt she got the voices done well and she had a good range.

Mary Trace is bright, bubbly and suddenly dunked back into the dating pool in her mid-thirties. She owns a successful boutique in a trendy Brooklyn neighborhood. But all of her closest friends are falling in love (with each other), and Mary refuses to feel like she's missing out on romance. So she starts saying yes to opportunities--and to dates.

When Mary goes on a blind date set up by a friend, her heart drops when she meets the perfectly gorgeous, and extremely well-groomed John Modesto-Whitford. There's not a hair out of place, and he's got the judgmental expression to match. When he drops a less-than-flattering comment about Mary's age, she's out of there.

John, desperate not to be anything like his lying snake of a father, prides himself on being honest to a fault. Though he always tells the truth, he has learned that sometimes it's best just to keep his trap shut. So why oh why does he tell the most gorgeous woman he's ever had the honor of having dinner with that she's...old?

Does blogging cut into your other hobbies/chores?

'I am sorry? What does other hobbies mean? LOL. But seriously, I have never had any other hobbies than reading, so I would say that if anything cut in it is blogging itself. But how boring it would be to go back to just reading. I love to talk about them too!

I guess blogging cuts into staring at tv too, but as I have said before, I do it while I watch tv. Right now I am watching a show about building dream houses.

Blogging is awesome! That is all I have to say at the end

Carole's Monday. My Fair Lily

Author: Meara Platt
Title: My Fair Lily
(Farthingale #1)
Genre: Historical Romance
Format: ebook
Pages: 276
Published: October 13th 2014
Where I Got It: My shelf (Amazon)

Summary:
Ewan Cameron, estranged grandson of the Duke of Lotheil, is in London because of a deathbed promise made to his father and has no intention of staying beyond his three month obligation. Nothing can tempt him to remain, not even Lily, the beautiful bluestocking determined not only to restore relations between him and his grandfather, but to turn Ewan into a proper gentleman. Ewan, proud of his Scottish heritage, refuses to admit that Lily, a blue-eyed, English girl, has claimed his heart. It doesn’t matter that his big lump of a sheepdog is madly in love with her. Nor is it significant that Ewan can always tell Lily apart from her identical twin sister. Always.

Lily Farthingale, the scholarly twin, dreams of becoming the first female member of the Royal Society. She grabs at the chance when the elderly Duke of Lotheil approaches her with a proposition - he’ll admit her into the Royal Society, if she helps him to establish a relation with his estranged grandson, Ewan Cameron, a very rough-around-the-edges Scotsman who hates everything English. Between shootings, explosions, and Lily’s abduction, Ewan ends up falling in love with Lily in this Pygmalion-inspired story.

Review:
Look at that puppers! I had to pick it up especially knowing this lovable brute is a catalyst to our lovers meeting.

Ewan is the estranged grandson of the Duke. He is now in London because of a promise he made to his father before he passed. He needs to try and restore and fix the relationship with the Duke. He doesn't plan to stay past the 3 months until his sheepdog has love-at-first-sight with Lily Farthingale. When the big ol' puppy knocks Lily down into the mud, Ewan feels terrible that her book, gown, and glasses are destroyed. He replaces everything and from there they become friends and maybe something more.

This was very sweet and very cute. There are some darker undertones though. There is a deep hatred in Ewan's family. The Duke is a jerk. The cousins want Ewan gone. And Ewan has a stubborn resentment that ruins his chances of trying to fix these ties. It's sad all around. This whole family is too stubborn and prideful. That is the problem. The Duke is a jerk, sure, but I do not think any of his actions were full of menace. I just do not think his realizes he is being too controlling. They all just needed to sit down and get over themselves.

Bless Lily. I adored her. She was so sweet and such a bluestocking. She loves science and just wants to be part of the Royal Society and maybe travel the world to research!

And that dang dog. He was too sweet. He doesn't realize he is not a lapdog. Love him!

Oooooo that twist on who the baddie is was good. Didn't see that coming!!!

Callie needs to get her arse beat. She is such a B word!! How can you do that!!!!!!!????? UGH!

I will admit I was worried this was going to be insta-love and insta-lust. It wasn't and it made me happy. It took a while for these two. They became friends first. SURE there was some lust, because he's hot and she's a looker, but it took a while and I liked that for them. She is too logical and he has a lot of baggage.

Overall, this was a very fun novel. I loved how they really became friends first - sure there was some lust going on - but they got to know each other and then fall in love. It was a very sweet romance with some serious issues that I was excited to see work out or start to work out. I am curious about book 2. I'll give this 4 stars.
