My thoughts:

This one included the prequel novella The Strange Case of Finley Jayne -98 pages. I liked that one, it gave me a better look at Finley, and it stood well on its own. I actually liked it more than the actual book.

On the strengths and weaknesses of the actual book, I would say that read the prequel. Without I doubt I would have liked Finley like I did. And I do hate that. This novella could have been in the actual book, do not make us read it later or before. I hate that. Cos if you do not know about it you miss out. Not cool.

Finley is a strange girl, we find out why later on. She meets a strange bunch of youngsters and befriends them. They are hunting for someone, she does not join in. She is just around.

And then boom! Love triangle. WHy oh why! The first guy is such a boring loser. The other guy, oh whatever, yes he is a bad boy but he has so much character, while the first has no personality.

But love triangle aside, it was a good book. I did like the novella the most, so that was a shame. I would read more if the library had them, but to buy...one word, love triangle. Recommend...sure, why not. But be warned, love triangle! Really, why did there have to be a love triangle!? I liked it so much until then. I still recommend it to YA steampunk lovers though.

My thoughts:

I was thinking of giving this one an ok rating, but, did I think it as ok? Did I like a single thing about it?

Not really.

Every single character was an idiot. So freaking annoying. I would not want to be friends with any of them. I would not even want to be in the room with any of them. I did meet 3 previous characters, but even they had changed.

The book tried WAY too hard. WAAAAAAY! No, that is not funny. No, that is not cute. That is pushing it beyond. It was trying. It was exhausting to read.

There was no plot. Suddenly there was one. And I was all, this makes no sense. I do not like this. I would have DNFed if I had not loved Soulless, but even that series turned sour at the end. 

I do not recommend reading this series.

My thoughts:

I was disappointed. See I recently finished a trilogy by this author and that trilogy was awesome, I could not put it down and it made me want more by her. Sure this is another pen-name, but it did feel like a totally different author too.

It was steampunk, but a few gadgets does not steampunk make. I always want more.

Lucas was gone 7 years and suddenly lots had changed for women...yeah, more time needed there. Or at least tell us things that led to that. They had a female PM, well, then at least there had to be women in parliament when he went away..right?

Arden waited for him all that time and refused to believe he was dead. She never looked at another man. Of course Lucas had no memory so he was free to spread out. I did not like that. 7 years for a woman in her early 20s is a lot. And everyone said he was dead but whatever. She had an "intuition. "

He tries to kill her, she is a bit tstl.

But it was good. But not good enough to make me want to read more. No, I can say this was the end of this series for me. Sometimes those books that are good, are just not good enough to tempt me with more.

Third Daughter is the first book in the The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). This steampunk-goes-to-Bollywood (Bollypunk!) romance that takes place in an east-Indian-flavored alternate world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue. And, of course, kissing. 

My thoughts:

First, where are my saber duels? You promised me duels.

Moving on. Everyone was so ohhh bollypunk! While I was all there could be more. Just cos you show us Indian clothes on the cover. Have Indian names and mention a few things does not India make. This could have been any fake fantasy land. I never saw a lot of steampunk in this world. It was more a fantasy book with a skyship with a few Indian flavors. I think I would like to see what someone that actually is from India thinks. That would be interesting. I just wanted more. More India, and def more steampunk. A few gadgets does not steampunk make.

But it was a good story, even if it felt totally fantasy in a fantasy land. 

Aniri must marry a neighboring prince. They are barbarians and she is all euww. She goes there to spy cos they have an airship. And she is all I miss my lover! She is 17. But she matures and gets a brain...was this YA? Honestly it did not feel like YA. Dunno what makes a book feel YA. Just cos someone is young does not make it YA and this never felt YA. I only realised it when I read reviews.

Even if I wanted more meat on its bones I enjoyed it and would read more if I had more.

My thoughts:

"Some Unfortunate Future Day" by Cassandra Clare

I liked this one, in a way it felt kind of horror-ish cos the girl turns acreepy in the end.

"The Last Ride of the Glory Girls" by Libba Bray

This one was good too, but for me it did not really work as a short story, I had too many questions about the world. Where were they?

"Clockwork Fagin" by Cory Doctorow

Oliver Twist and steampunk..eh, no this was kind of boring.

"Seven Days Beset by Demons" by Shawn Cheng

A graphic short, it was not that fun either but it was over fast.

"Hand in Glove" by Ysabeau S. Wilce

I was not that into this story, it just did not pull me in .

"Ghost of Cwmlech Manor" by Delia Sherman

This one was kind of nice, Ghosts and steam was different.

"Gethsemane" by Elizabeth Knox

I got all confused by this one, it had potential but it just lost me along the way

"The Summer People" by Kelly Link

I liked this one but at the same time I was disappointed cos it certainly was not steampunk. But it was still good and...EVIL ;)

"Peace in Our Time" by Garth Nix

I was a bit what? It had promise...but needed more. It was more a book in progress.

"Nowhere Fast" by Christopher Rowe

Post-apocalyptic...what does that has to do with steampunk? Still good but eh?

"Finishing School" by Kathleen Jennings

Graphic short, did not like it

"Steam Girl" by Dylan Horrocks

Ok the only steamunk here was in a story a girl told,  that does not work for me either. Oh and it was meh.

"Everything Amiable and Obliging" by Holly Black

This one was the best one of the bunch!

"The Oracle Engine" by M.T. Anderson.

....I skimmed and skimmed. Boring

Yes some were meh, some bad and some good but all in all an ok anthology.

Review: Steampunk Darcy - Monika Fairview

My thoughts:

Mr Darcy and Lizzy were real, and long long after they have died another Mr Darcy is quite obsessed with them. Which brings is to our story, Mr Darcy is called the Boss and has quite the empire in Boston. The world went to hell and from the ashes a new world began. A world that is steampunk.

Darcy wants to ...well spy on his ancestors, and he wants Seraphene to help. But this is a PP variation so she does not like him. Though I must say he was much better than old Darcy. This Darcy was nerdy and lost in himself. I get that. But Seraphene was a good Lizzy. She liked where she came from, she was firm and stood up for herself.

There is also a really spoiled and teen Georgiana, a Wickham you must discover for yourself and a new brother for Darcy, Richard which I guess must be colonel Fitzwilliam. Very sad cos he is an idiot. There are other things too as he has named most things after places and people in PP.

It's quite the adventure, from swimming in icky rivers, flying a barouche and meeting pirates. I do like a strange world and I would really like to know more about the Uprising and the bad days. She should totally write about those days too, it would be a good dystopia.

Conclusion:

An interesting take on Pride and Prejudice.

Review: My Lady Quicksilver - Bec McMaster

My thoughts:

This had to be my favorite in the series so far. I really liked reading about Rosalind aka Mercury and Lynch.

I am so torn. Yes the vampires are bad, but they are good ones too. Yes the humanists have a worthy cause, but some have done bad things. I do wonder how it will all turn out in the end...

Rosalind then, who is also Mercury, is the leader of the Humanists. She was resourceful and strong. Lynch was also strong and well he did not have to do much, I just thought he was such a hottie. He is the leader of the Nighthawks and plan to hunt down Mercury. Ohhh drama, sexy drama.

The world is cool, vampires ruling, humans are low class and food. A paranormal London and people are unhappy. But steampunk, eh, just that you give someone a mechanical hand does not steampunk make. Still it works as it is.

Conclusion:

There will be romance, danger and cool things to come

Review: Skies of Steel - Zoe Archer

My thoughts:
I do hate writing a review 24 hours later, by then I am all meh, I felt what?

But it was a cool world. Where men could become Men O'War. Tied to their flying ship. A steampunk world that was at war. I liked this world and wanted to read more set here. Sometimes I complain that steampunk books do not have enough steam. Many puts in one mechanical clock and is all steampunk! While this blended romance and steampunk well. A steampunk should be filled with steampunk and this one was. But not too much that it got confusing. That is no fun either. So + on steampunk.

Romance then. Mikhail (did I mention that it's one of my fav Russian names?), and Daphne are very very different. But they worked together and brought in some drama that I will not spoil for you all.

Conclusion:

All in all making it a good novel. There is romance, steampunk, an interesting world and a bit of action.

My thoughts:

First, she was not as much a spy as the blurb let me to believe. But then who cares about that. This was Lena steering through the danger of the blood court, at a time when most vampires seems to forget about the old thrall contracts. And the Echelon debutantes do not have it easy.

Back to the start then. In book 1 Lena flirted with the beast, Will Carver, werwulfen and a dangerous man. In book 2 she is a debutante looking to be a thrall to some powerful vampire, while dodging some. Will does his best to try and forget her. His kind does not mix with humans, it's too dangerous.

Lena does do some spy work, a bit of telling about things she hears, but she is not happy about how some do things. And I feel conflicted. I do want the humans to be free. But at the same time there are good vampires too. So what should happen? I just do not know. This is a world that will go up in flames soon. And what will then happen to Blade and Will, well they will die. Conflicted yes, as some vamps are so evil too.

Conclusion:

Anyway, romance, Passion! Danger! That is what this book will bring you. Steampunk? Eh, not so much. But it was a good book.

Review: Kiss of Steel - Bec McMaster

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitecapel district. For Honoria Todd, it's the last safe haven. But at what price?

My thoughts:

The steampunk aspect, well there was not much mention of it, except for a mechanical spider or two. The paranormal aspect, oh yes, that was there, and because of the steampunk vibes it felt much darker than usual.

Honoria is hiding with her siblings in a part of London that is ruled by the mysterious Blade. The rest of London belongs to the vampire council. And they are not good guys. But then they are the rules of England. Vampire beings who keep humans as thralls to feed upon. And humans pay taxes in blood. It's a darker world. It's a good world, and interesting world to read about.

Honoria is kind, too kind at times, she wants the best for her poor siblings. I liked her, I felt sorry for her, and I could respect her too. She could take back. Blade, our vampire renegade hero was, well let's just say he was alpha. Tough, and doing all to protect those within his realm. They are not a couple that should be, him bloodthirsty, and she not wanting anything to do with that world. But we all know the old story, passion is a sure thing when they meet. Even if they try to fight it. Some should just be together.

Conclusion:

An interesting world. A good couple and evil vampires that rot in the end.

My thoughts:

Iron Sharks, Airships and scary trolls. I do love steampunk and the world is just so fascinating, things that could have happened (even if not likely ;). I did miss the zombies though, I never thought I would say that but they do give a nice chase.

This book works fine on it's own, we do not see the previous characters around but if you want to know more about the Horde, the tower, zombies, then you really must start with book 1.

Annika is a mysterious woman who does not talk about her past. She hails from Iceland, the land of trolls and witches...or what is really going on? Annika was hard to get to know, but that was the idea, as she kept her secrets close. We knew them, but she would not let anyone else know. So it was not easy at times to get to know her, and therefore like her.

The hero, David is from the new world, and would by some not be called pretty exactly as he has legs of iron, fake eye and scars. But such a  nice and sweet guy. Love him.

There is adventure as bad things are coming. David are off to explore volcanoes, Annika has secrets to guard. Friendship is growing, passion is slowly emerging. And when it finally does come around, then it's hot and fast.

Conclusion:
I did feel a bit sad that there was no Mina or Rhys, but I can live with that. And I do hope that there will be more from this fascinating world.

Until, that is, she receives a summons from Alexandria that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her? Why is the God-Breaker Plague suddenly expanding? And how has Ivy Tunstell suddenly become the most popular actress in all the British Empire?

My thoughts:

This is the end then, it has been a fun ride, I loved the manners and the witty mind of our dear Alexia. But all good things must come to and end, and I am happy the series ended. Because too many go on and on, and then only get worse and worse. Stop when you are on top is my motto.

What to say that I haven't said before. Perfect manners, I mean how dreadful would it not be if your hair was out of order? Shameful. Witty speech, the cute nicknames that Lord Akeldama uses, Ivy and her hats, Lyall being his usual beta, Biffy working in the hat shop, sexy Conall taking off his clothes here and there to turn into a wolf. Lovely as always. The book is cute and funny, if you have read it then you know what I mean, if not then start at book 1. This is not a series to read out of order.

What else then, well Alexia goes to Egypt to get to the bottom of things. The usual people are around. There are parasol fights, fainting, and a werewolf cub on the loose. This is a family that creates havoc wherever they go.

Conclusion.

I made it short, I just feel that I have said everything better before. I will miss Alexia and Conall.

My thoughts:

I liked it, I just did not like it as much as book 1. In that aspect I felt rather disappointed.

I still liked the steampunk angle, the zombies and the adventure. But this time I felt the romance was lacking, I actually never felt that Yasmeen and Archimedes liked each other. I felt no sexual tension, it was more that he said how much he wanted her but I did not feel it. What I did feel was her heart of steel and how she did not want or need a man in her life. That I got. And when she did fall, yes I am saying it again, I did not see it.

The book was still good, do not get me wrong. Steampunk rocks, Yasmeen was cool in her tough shell, Archimedes is a true adventurer and hey it has zombies. One has to like that.

Conclusion:

But in the end I just wish I had liked it as much as I liked book 1. I hope book 3 will be better because I'd like to read more.

My thoughts:

The blurb did have me thinking that someone was after werewolves and that there would be danger and so on. But there was not anything like that in this book. No, this book is about Darcy and Lizzie being in love, but Darcy never proposes. Something is wrong and Lizzie is growing restless. He obviously likes her so what is the matter?!

This is where the drama comes in, he is a werewolf and of course she is shocked to learn the truth. Who would not be? She is not really prepared for anything like this so there is a shaky times when she tries to come term with it, and then there is another lady who wants Darcy too. Which brings some extra tension to the book. But we all know they will end up together, that is always promised.

Honestly, yes I can see Darcy as a werewolf. That explains somethings in a way and it just fits him. Especially when we get to see him as a wolf, there is just a playful side to him that does not always come out when he is human. He is just a great alpha.

It was another sweet book. They got to know each other, there were a few misunderstandings, and everyone lived happily ever after. 

Conclusion:

If you want something extra in your JA variation then go for this one, you will love Mr. Darcy as a werewolf.
