Dnfs of 2024. Happy New Year and TMST

DNFS of the year. I was sure I did a mid year post, but nope so here they all are. Life is too short to read everything. I have too many books for me to spend time on books I do not connect with. Because trust me there are more that I give the reason, maybe I will like it better in a month. I never do

The theory of haunting by Sarah Monette. It was dull

The shuddering city by Sharon Shinn. I think I should have tried reading it instead. It was boring

A slow fire burning by Paula Hawkins. I did not give a reason, oh well

Rise of the demon by Diana Rowland. I did not give a reason. But it had been years between books, and I was not feeling it anymore

Rising Sun by Donna Grant. But come on, no reason again!?

Earls Trip by Jenny Holiday. As it stands now, dnf. The modern twist is not for me, I want HR to be HR

I was bored. I have NO idea what was going on. Historical romance? No, not a single feel of that. Could have been anywhere, anytime
Too much talking, thinking.
No idea who it was about

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton. Not working for me

Pecan Children by Quinn Connor. I have had the worst time with audiobooks lately. I just can not concentrate

Inanna by Emily H. Wilson. Not feeling it. I Think I should read it instead

My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. I gave it a good try, but I am not feeling it or care at all

The Long Game by Elena Armas. The library has bought lots of these, I guess of tiktok. Not caring at all.

The Feather and the Moon Well by Shean Pao. My Review says  bored and confused, and now. I do not remember even trying it!! I srsly think someone else tried it

This Will Be Fun by E.B. Asher.  Maybe if I had the time, but I do not have time. I have an audiobook service with only 20 hours and ending soon so choosing something else

The Xmas Factor by Annie Sanders, No reason

The House Witch by Delemhach. I really want to read this book, but OMG the text is tiny

A Long Way From Home by Peter Carey. Just because

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree. I tried Another one, but cozy is just not for me

The Christmas Promise by Sue Moorcroft. I do want to try this Another time in the future

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Yeah this does not seem for me. it feels very YA and very I have read this a hundred times before. No idea why people love this

And that brings an end to 2024. Better luck next year. And remember. It is never wrong to DNF. Life is too short to spend on books you do not love.

Out with the old, in with the new!

12/31/2024 How do you celebrate New Year's Eve/the new year?

When I lived with my parents we used to melt tin? and put it in water and then that would show the future. And well we do have a fireplace now so we could do that again...I want to do that again!

Drink some bubbly, say Happy New Year. Watch some fireworks. Very low key. We usually just do take out and chill.

  1. I actually didn't have any DNFs in 2024, and usually I have 2 or 3. I really fought it out. I loved Earl's Trip a lot. I also enjoyed Fourth Wing - yes it was very YA angsty feeling, but I still got into the audiobook. However, I should have DNF'd the second book. Not sure if I'll read the third when it comes out.

    1. I really wanted to like The Earl, but it was so modern, why was it not just set now.
As for 4th wings, everyone loves it, but it was nothing new for me

  2. Sorry to hear you DNF The Pecan Children...it was one of my favourite books of the year, go figure 😂. As for cozy...I don't fare well with it either. Like, I love sci-fi, but cozy sci-fi? I tried it once, and it's not my thing.

I didn't know about melting tin and putting it in water.

I'd like to spend New Year's Eve playing games with friends...except we have no friends 😬. I swear, I have more real friendships with internet people. Do takeout and chill doesn't sound bad at all, though...

    Have a great 2025 Linda!

    1. I do fear it was the audio. If I found a print I would def give it another go, I think that is it with most formats. You might click with another

I mean I think it is tin? Or maybe they changed cos it was some silly EU rule that you could not melt it yada yada

  3. I agree about life being too short to finish books you don't enjoy. The only one on your list I've heard of was Fourth Wing and I never had the desire to read it, even if it is very popular.

    1. It is so huge! And everyone loves it, but for me it was the same story as another dozen YA books I have read and it was not even YA

  4. Ha what a list, its great. Well I am a lover of Fourth Wing but no idea why. Just love the dragon bond with the rider and all the action. And I guess I haven't really read fantasy much like this so its all new. Keep on DNF'ing in 2025.

    1. You can love it :) The whole dragon thing was the only new thing, but I have read even those in the past

  5. I DNFd A Slow Fire Burning too. Yes, Fourth Wing is very YA. I liked it and listened to the 2nd one, but I don't care if I read the 3rd one or not. We're here in Montana with family and will be going to a party tonight. I usually never do anything on New Year's Eve and I'm in bed well before midnight, haha! Wishing you a happy 2025! :)

  6. I'm proud of you for DNFing. I struggle to do so.

    And what a fun tradition!!

    1. It is hard, sometimes the book just sits there and sometimes I forget I even started it

  7. I am definitely an advocate of DNFing books that aren't working for you.

My favorite New Year's celebrations these days tend to be the quiet ones at home. We have a tradition of having hot fudge sundaes and music jams when its just the three of use. Sometimes we've gotten together with friends for informal celebrations. Growing up, we used to bang pots and pans outside at midnight. I miss the days when my daughter was younger and we could get away with celebrating at 9 p.m. LOL
