August 8th: Do you feel pressure to read more in genres that other bloggers read?
Not really. I guess in the beginning I felt I should read more YA cos everyone was reading YA. It was just YA YA YA YA. I felt like I should read some too since everyone was so crazy about it. And sure I still read YA since I see some interesting books now and then, and I do like interesting books :D But I no longer see that YA hype everywhere. I never really followed only YA bloggers either, but still YA was everywhere and I have seen less of it now.
But that really is the only genre I felt a pressure to read. I read almost every other genre anyway. I love them all, I like them for different reasons. Fiction for some reality. Fantasy because I love it. UF for some kick-assness. Historical romance for escapism. And so it goes on, something for every mood, every season.
It was not pressure, but thanks to blogging I decided to try more sci-fi. I was a bit afraid of it because of all the tech stuff, not that interested in that. But you just have to find your niche. And I even read some of the techy stuff in the end and enjoyed that too! So not because of pressure, but because I wanted to try more.
The same goes with mystery/suspense/thrillers. I do not read a lot of that yet, but I have slowly tried some. I have not felt pressure there either, but I have been curious when others have been reading those genres.
That is why blogging is great. It has made me try more new genres.
I know exactly what you mean. I don't exactly feel pressure to read some genres that I don't read a lot, but I do see reviews for some books that aren't my normal genres and that makes me want to read it more. I don't think that is pressure though. That is just a good book with a good review. I'm like you, mostly PNR, UF, Fantasy and more Sci-Fi. I do read some mysteries/thrillers. I don't read much romance that doesn't have some sort of fantasy to it.

AT first the pressure was there cos omg everyone was reading YA, and only YA. But then I guess I found more blogs and could relax lol
DeleteI've definitely picked up books outside of my comfort zone because of other bloggers but, like you, I don't think it was because of pressure. It was more because of their enthusiasm for a book.

DeleteSame here! I read what I enjoy not what other people enjoy. Sure I'll give in to hype here and there, especially with YA, and 90% of the time, I'll dislike the books.

DeleteI felt the same way in the beginning as well but as time goes on, I realize I'm never gonna like what everybody else is reading so I've decided to go with what I like.

DeleteI agree with you and feel the same. I don't think I felt particularly pressured to read a specific genre, but then sometimes I got caught up with trying to read all the new releases as all the other bloggers at the same time. That made blogging less fun for me. So I just read whatever I feel like. Some old, some new, something completely random... Following other bloggers did help me find many new authors and be more open minded to other genres too.

DeleteI agree. I don't feel pressured to read other genres, but once in a while I'll see a book that really grabs my interest but isn't something I would usually pick up. I do sometimes use reading events like sci-fi summer to encourage me to read books that I've been wanting to read but just never seem to pick up.

DeleteYou learn to find that balance of relying on bloggers/reviews to branch out a bit but not so much that you're chasing trends.
ReplyDeleteYA was a big one for me too. If you weren't reviewing the latest and greatest no one read your blog so it made you read things that weren't your thing just to stay relevant lol

Oh yes the staying relevant. I am glad I got over that. Sure I still read new books, but I do feel I also read not what everyone else is reading

DeleteLoves your thoughts on this topic. I used to feel some pressure to read YA because it was and is still EVERYWHERE!! However I love romance and that is what I read so NO SHAME. Although thanks to blogging I am intrigued by other genres.

DeleteI don't feel pressured to read other genres but I sometimes find myself trying new to me authors because other bloggers are losing their stuff over such and such book. It piques my interest when I see a lot of people gravitating towards one book.

DeleteI don't feel that pressure at all, I love SFF and I'm pretty comfortable with sticking with it especially when most of the books I'm interested in are that genre as well. I will always pick up anything that captures my attention though, no matter the genre.

DeleteReally interesting discussion point. As I visit blogs there are books that sound so good but are not quite me, or are down the line from where I want to read. However sometimes I have tried books due to other bloggers and been very nicely surprised and found new to me authors I like.

ReplyDeleteGenerally I don't feel pressured to read anything (thankfully), but I get what you mean about YA. YA contemporary books especially, since I'm not usually as interested in those.

DeleteI don't really feel any pressure to read certain genres because I don't think I blog regularly and am not as involved in the community as I used to be.
ReplyDeleteBut I do often feel compelled to read books because of bloggers that I would not read otherwise - not whole genres, though. and I don't feel "pressured," just encouraged!
I am with you on science fiction - I went in on that genre this year and it is great!

DeleteI agree, bloging has opened me up to stuff I would never have read otherwise, and I've found some of my favorite books that way. Who knew? :)

DeleteHmmm... I don't feel that pressure at all, either. I guess if I wanted my blog to be bigger and reach more people, I may feel that pressure - to read what is on peoples "it" list, but I just blog for myself, to share what I love to read.

DeleteNo pressure here, however I have found a lot of wonderful books that I would never have heard of until I started reading blog posts. I've also started reading a lot more contemporary romance since I started reading blog posts, and more recently, I have added some historical romance to the mix due to other bloggers. It helps to have other genres to fall back on when you only blog about paranormal stuff like I do, and keeps me out of a rut or reading slump.
