My thoughts:
The Darkest Midnight by Grace Draven
Oh it took me a while to realise where the story took place. It has been too long since I read that awesome book of hers! And this takes place in the same world, but another country.
I like Jahna, I felt sorry for her too, but she was great and knew what she wanted. To be a chronicler, you go girl.

And yes it is a romance, even if there is not a lot of romance. Just a dance between two people, but there will be  a happy ending even if I could not see it. But then, oh perfect for sure.

The Chosen by Thea Harrison
I never did see that other suitor, disappointed. But yes Lila meets the Wolf, they flirt. They will try to save her kingdom and live happily ever after. Nice story, nice setting and i would like more from this world.

Though her country sounds weak, sorry but true. No wonder someone wants to conquer it.

The storm by Elizabeth Hunter
Man meets woman, fall in love, and the story takes forever to end. 15 years! Damn he never gave up. I liked the story and the world, but at the same time it felt a bit too long. Maybe cos I had to charge the battery and it was uncomfortable, lol.

Jeffe Kennedy
I had not realise how much tension there was still between Ami and Ash. I mean I knew they were not married, I knew why, but poor Ash. I get it, half blood, ex convicts do not marry queens. And that is why this story was so needed, these two needed a conclusion. So what we have are two people, tired, and just wanting to be with each other but arguing instead. All while midwinter draws close. Oh and the kids are hilarious!

Conclusion:
I liked the xmas feel, even though there is no xmas since 3 of 4 takes place in fantasy world. But hey people celebrated before xmas and that is what they do here. Midwinter celebrations. I liked it.

Review: House of Night 3, 4 - PC Cast

The House of Night series by PC and Kristin Cast

 Book 3 Chosen

Genre: Paranormal romance, YA
Pages: 307
Published: 2008

Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity.  Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare position of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster.  Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-father in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres.  But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely reflects the truth…

My third House of Night books, and I find myself starting to enjoy them. They are just so so very YA. The keep on swearing, and talking about kissing boys.

In this one Zoey has problems with her 3 boyfriends. Eric all sweet, Loren who tempts her, and Heath, whose blood she sure likes. But then there is the problem with her weird Zombievampire friend, and the fact that Neferet is not all she says she is.

The twins, I have kind of grown tired of them, and always hearing the look alike. Zoey, must she always talk about what a nerd she is, and that she is a slut, when she isn't. Who I did like was Aphrodite. I get her now.

Oh and since I read a translation, did her grandmother really say shitmonkey?! Cos was it a new word, or did they just translate it to something that has never been used. "Edit: thanks to Msbookjunkie I know she said turdmonkey, lol"

Anyway, readers who like YA paranormal will enjoy this one. It has all the ingredients. And I find myself ..amused.

Untamed, book 4

Pages: 338
Published: 2008

Life sucks when your friends are pissed at you. Just ask Zoey Redbird – she’s become an expert on suckiness. In one week she has gone from having three boyfriends to having none, and from having a close group of friends who trusted and supported her, to being an outcast. Speaking of friends, the only two Zoey has left are undead and unMarked. And Neferet has declared war on humans, which Zoey knows in her heart is wrong. But will anyone listen to her?  Zoey's adventures at vampyre finishing school take a wild and dangerous turn as loyalties are tested, shocking true intentions come to light, and an ancient evil is awakened.

Ok ok, I am getting more amused. But still these books are just too YA for me. It's in the way the people act, so very YA, there is namedropping and they are just trying to be so hip, and know what kids are about. I didn't really care for that even when I was younger. There is a reason why I read harlequin when I was 10.

Anyway in this one she has lost her boyfriends, Neferet is evil and wants to start a war. Her friends hate her, and something evil is lurking around.

I would love to read an English version to see if they are the same, cos the translation, it feels like they try to much.

But I find myself more interested, and much more than with book 1. And the way this one ended, I need book 5. I will not stop reading. Some I only read cos I kind of want to know. But with this one, I am starting to like it. Especially Aphrodite, she has changed. And with the Cherokee myths in this one, what can I say I enjoyed it.

But, this is the big one, please stop explaining every freaking time that the twins are not twins and blah blah blah.

Blodeuedd's Cover Corner: I am not liking them
Reason for reading: Library
Final thoughts: They keep getting better.

Review: The Chosen - Ricardo Pinto

The Chosen by Ricardo Pinto
Book 1 of The Stone Dance of the Chameleon

Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 700 (paperback)
Published: 2000

Young Carnelian has spent his entire life alone with his father, who years ago rejected the savage cruelty of the Masters of Osrakum and was sent into exile. But now a ship has come flying through the winter gales to shatter his quiet world. Three Masters disembark, and as they remove their masks of gold, Carnelian is awed by the light that seems to radiate from their skin. In formal conclave they beg Carnelian's father to return with them to Osrakum to oversee the election of a new God Emperor.

And so Carnelian begins to fulfill his destiny. Along his perilous journey to the Osrakum, he is forced to learn bitter lessons in bloodshed, power, intrigue, love, and treachery--and sets in motion the concluding events in a story four thousand years old.

I sadly was not taken by this book, don't get me wrong. He is a great worldbuilder, and has created this rich and complicated race, and he is a good writer. But just because of that I do not have to fall for it.

First up is the main character whom I never connected with, a 15 year old boy who was so more humane than those other Masters that lives back in Osrakum. But I just never cared for him, or anyone in this book. I think this might be a character driven fantasy book and I have seen this year that those do not work for me. But great for those who love those kinds of books.

Also I need magic, wars and stuff in my fantasy, this could just have been in some far away and very creepy country.

The book also gave me a lot of questions and I need answers, there could have been more talk of how things where as they were. I mean the book had over 700 pages, but still I never got close to this rich world.

Also I do not want to read about a 15 year old boy having sex, especially since he always talked about the other one as a boy, did that mean he was younger? I hope not. So that did not work for me, and it felt strange since the road there was so much different than was what to come. Suddenly he was all whiny and lovestruck.

But yes do not listen to me, those were just things that did not work for me. But if you like character driven fantasy then this book is for you.

It is a story about a boy who grows up with his dad and all is fine, then the Masters come. He sees how cruel they are and when they leave for the mainland it gets worse. he might be one of them but he certainly not act like them. How anyone can live in that horrible society I do not know. There are also a lot of Eastern influences and he has built in it to make it a fantasy with those influences. Funny enough I love sic-fi like that but not fantasy. I can already imagine how cool this would have been in sci.fi.

So it is not the writing that did not work, it was just not the story for me. I can't like all fantasy which I have noticed.

Final thoughts: Did not work for me, but I leave it up to you to make up your own mind. He is a good writer. And the world is complex.
