Carole's Saturday Review: Lady Susan

Author: Jane Austen
Title: Lady Susan
Genre: Classic, Historical, & Romance
Pages: 80
Published: 1871
Where I Got It: My Shelf (Used bookstore)

Beautiful, flirtatious, and recently widowed, Lady Susan Vernon seeks an advantageous second marriage for herself, while attempting to push her daughter into a dismal match.

I needed a little bit of Jane Austen in my life and I haven't read this one yet, so why not?

This is a short story compared to the other novels and told in a different format. The story is told in a series of letters from multiple different people. It was an interesting way to tell the story, because we get to see the characters from their own POV and from the POV of others. I did like this format a lot and I think the author did a good job. However, this is all I can really say I liked.

The characters were all horrible. Lady Susan was a viper under her beauty and charm. The Vernons are nice enough and care about Frederica, but weak and annoying. Reginald is nice too, but an idiot. Alicia was an enabler and just as bad as Lady Susan. Frederica is sweet and so abused, but my goodness I wanted to slap her all the time. Having characters like these make stories hard to care about.

I did not care about anyone and so I really didn't care. I began losing interest about halfway, but since that meant there was only 40 pages left, I kept on going. But I barely remember the outcome. I had to do a quick reminder course when I decided to write this review.

The writing style was a-typical Austen, but I feel she missed the mark on her characters in this one.

Big bummer for me, but not the worse thing I ever read....2 stars. I gave this a star for the format and writing style.

Friday Night Movie: Winter's Tale

A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her.

Director: Akiva Goldsman
Writers: Akiva Goldsman (screenplay), Mark Helprin (novel)
Stars: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe

1 h 58 min
Drama/Fantasy (2014)

Musings:
I heard this one was good so I had to give it a go. It took me a while thought. And as always, rather slow moving. The movie take its time.

I liked the historical beginning. I had only seen this other poster so I did not realise when it would take place. The thief falls in love with the dying woman. And look there is magic around, and dark powers. Yes I really had no idea what it was about. There was a whole world not known to others.

I liked Farrell, that accent was not bad either you know. Crowe was a nice baddie, even if I really did not get why he wanted him dead. Good characters.

And then it moved to the present era...no more about that.

A good movie. But yes for some reason I keep picking the slow ones. Not slow as in bad, just slow. Not a lot of action and so on.

The Dragon's Legacy - Deborah A. Wolf

The last Aturan King is dying, and as his strength fades so does his hold on sa and ka. Control of this power is a deadly lure; the Emperor stirs in his Forbidden City to the East, while deep in the Seared Lands, the whispering voices of Eth bring secret death. Eight men and women take their first steps along the paths to war, barely realizing that their world will soon face a much greater threat; at the heart of the world, the Dragon stirs in her sleep. A warrior would become Queen, a Queen would become a monster, and a young boy plays his bird-skull flute to keep the shadows of death at bay.

My thoughts:
I did wonder about the map when I started, cos it was so obviously our world, almost. But maybe they just wanted an easy map. You'd have to see it.

I liked how the "barbarians" had women warriors. The men stayed at home because their seed was precious. They could not do battle then. They could stay home and take care of everything. The women did the chasing after men too. then men were more gentle, but, there is always a but, the women weren't always. If the women rule, well like with every system there can be flaws too. As for this people, they are dying, the whole world is dying. Almost no babies are born. Soon women warriors will be a myth since they are the only ones.

Sulema is one of these warriors. Her mother is a powerful dreamer and there is a secret there. We learn of it after a while as the journey takes Sulema to another kingdom. One of magic. One with a mighty king. I must say when I did meet him he did not seem that might. Ok he was totally all powerful but he was also human. Myths about things do have a tendency to explode.

There are other pows too. The one of Jian who is taken from his home to become a prince. I guess their paths will intertwine at hone point. I'd love to learn more about his origin.

Hennai, another woman warrior who shows us life in the tribe after Sulema leaves.

There are things going on. Plots and conspiracies. It's hard to know how to like. Sulema does seem very innocent. Yes she is a tough warrior, but can see see all those plots brewing? Her mother was cool, hardened and ruthless. What is there not to like.

But there were a lot of made up words, sure I learned them after a while, but you know, a lot. It's better to ease into a series then rush in headfirst. And I do like plots, but there were a lot. And the sun dragon was mentioned a lot, I get it, he is the sun.

Conclusion:
It was an interesting world and when the book ends, well yes sort of cliffhanger cos things are starting to fall apart.

Author Interview and Giveaway: Margaret Brownley

Today I have an interview with Margaret Brownley.
Welcome!
And be sure to check out the giveaway at the end

Tell me about yourself
I was always a storyteller and was constantly in trouble as a child for making up stories. The writer part was hard to acknowledge, partly because English was my least favorite subject.

I might have spent the rest of my life scribbling in notebooks and writing long amusing notes to my kids’ teachers had I not “volunteered” to edit my church newsletter. After I made the church picnic read like a Grisham novel, my former preacher took me aside and said, “Maybe God’s calling you to write fiction.” Until that moment, I never had the courage to follow my dreams.

On the personal side: I like to travel, think up reasons not to cook and spend

time with my grandkiddies.

Tell me about your new book
The story takes place in Two-Time, Texas in 1882.  In the first book of the series, Left at the Altar, we learn about the feud that gave the town its name.  We also meet the three Lockwood sisters.  A Match Made in Texas is the middle sister, Amanda’s, story.

What makes westerns so interesting to write?
I love writing about the old west.  That was when men were men and women were women but, as the old song goes, a cowboy wasn’t a cowboy unless he was wild, woolly and full of fleas.  Of course, the heroes I write about are more likely to be tall, dark and handsome.  I’m also fascinated by how the westward movement affected women and forced them to reinvent themselves to survive and even flourish.

Tell us about Amanda. About her being sheriff and all
I do believe that Amanda is my favorite character. Her father said she came out of the womb demanding equal rights.  She truly believes that a woman can do anything she sets her mind to and is out to prove it. But then she becomes the sheriff, she is tested like never, before. How can a woman who’s never fired a gun and can’t even resist the charms of her handsome prisoner, clean up the crime-ridden town?

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a new series called Shotgun Brides.  The first book, Stop the Wedding will be out next year.

Welcome to Two-Time Texas:
Where tempers burn hot
Love runs deep
And a single woman can change the course of history:
There’s a new sheriff in town.

Amanda Lockwood gets more than she bargained for when she’s elected Two-Time Texas’s first female sheriff. Anxious to prove herself, she sets out to stop crime in its tracks—taking down wanted man Rick Barrett in the process. But there’s something special about the charming outlaw. Common sense says he must be guilty…but her heart keeps telling her otherwise.

So what’s a sheriff to do? Gather an all-female posse and ride to save the day.

Things sure don’t look good for Rick. If he doesn’t convince the pretty sheriff to let him go, he’ll soon be pushing up daisies. But his plan to woo her to his side backfires when he’s the one who falls head over heels. Now he must choose between freedom or saving the woman he loves…and the clock is ticking.

Who knew A Match Made in Texas could be such sweet, clean, madcap fun?

New York Times and CBA best-selling author MARGARET BROWNLEY has penned nearly forty novels and novellas. Her books have won numerous awards, including Readers' Choice and Award of Excellence. She's a former Romance Writers of American RITA® finalist and has written for a TV soap.  She is currently working on a new series.  Not bad for someone who flunked eighth grade English.  Just don't ask her to diagram a sentence.

Are you’re askin’ if your virtue is safe with me?”
She blushed, but refused to back down. The man didn’t mince words and neither would she. “Well, is it?”
Safe as you want it to be,” he said finally.
