I felt like the premise was good, but it felt confusing and boring at times.

An old woman tells her story to a clerk. She was the handmaiden to an empress in exile. And we get snippets of what happened, but it just felt like I was robbed of the interesting bits! Her getting kicked out from court, her getting back into court. Instead we get some boring bits about people visiting.

Too many snippets, too many slow snippets. But I felt a really good story underneath it all, but it did not get to come out.

The audio was good though

A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage. Alone and sometimes reviled, she has only her servants on her side. This evocative debut chronicles her rise to power through the eyes of her handmaiden, at once feminist high fantasy and a thrilling indictment of monarchy.

  1. It sounds like this one was a bit more "tell you" what happened rather than "show you".

  2. A pity if it had promise but didn't really deliver.

  3. I will get to this at some point, I have the audio too. But a story that is so short but still boring sometimes? Yikes.
