Review: My Soul to Take - Rachel Vincent

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next.

My thoughts:

Was it as good as her other series? Eh, not really. Sure it was good, I read it fast, but there was not that frenzy to get the next book like with her Shifter books. Still a good light YA paranormal.

Kaylee screams and people dies. Why she does not know. Ok at first I thought it all good, but then it was like come on! Why not tell the poor child who can shatter eardrums. Stupid! Made no sense. Not gonna say why she screams, a possible spoiler even if easy to figure out.

She meets a boy, Nash, insta love (but I can buy it there cos of...things). 

What to say. People are dying, she thinks something fishy is going on and investigates all while figuring out who she is.

Conclusion:

YA PNR. Light. That's all.

My thoughts:

First I do have to say that it was not as good as book 1. Sure I still enjoyed the book, but it could just not top book 1. I'd have loved for them all to be kick-ass.

Maybe it was cos this one was darker, no, that was not it, I liked the darkness, it was gritty and real. Kori had gone through so much. I felt so sorry for her. And then we have Ian with his secrets. Could it be that the couple was not as good as in book 1? Don't ask me, truth be told I really do not remember much about book 1 o_O Which is never good either. So even if this was a good book, I fear that it might go into darkness too. In that corner in my mind where forgotten books go.

But hey, I liked the book. It was kick-ass, heartbreaking, any HEA seemed impossible, Tower is so freaking evil! The whole system with bindings makes me so mad too. What a good creation, such a cool world.

Therefore I just can't say why I did not think it was awesome. It was something, just something. Still it was good, it's Vincent after all.

....maybe it was Ian..yes maybe. I just did not fall for him...eh, just something. Whatever, the book was still good :)

Conclusion:
Dark, very dark, these peeps need to be happy.

My thoughts:

This is the start to a new series from Rachel Vincent and after having her Shifter series I knew I wanted this book, and what more can I say then I am sure glad I got it.

The paranormal elements in this series are that some skilled individuals have the power to find someone by a name, by blood, some have binding powers and make contracts you can't break, and some can move from shadow to shadow. There are also more and everyone knows about them, but no countries have done anything about this and pretend they are not there. Then there are those who profit from these skills others have and that bring us to the novel. There are two crime bosses in the city and you do not want to cross them. They hold on to their empires and skills are a trade to them.

Liv has the skill of tracking and these days she tries to stay on one side of the town since she works now and again for one of the crime bosses, Cavazo. She is strong, kickass (we all know I love that), and she has this love for freedom because in this world it's not easy being free. I did like her at once.

Cam is her exlover who shows up asking her to take a case. I can't go into details why they broke up but just say he wants her back and she is running. One thing he did I did not like, but again there were reasons back then. But damn this man loves her and wants her back. He would go to the end of the world for her and that is enough for me to melt into that little puddle. What else can I say then I promise you some romance and passion on the side.

It's not easy trying to move through this mafia world but they try their best. And I do love the world she created, it might just be this tiny obsession I used to have for mafia related things. There is action, danger and a whole lot of questions. Which is also a great part because there is always something there, just over that hill and I am reading like crazy to find the answers to everything that is happening. You just can't put it down, you will want more, you need to know more.

And that brings us to Cavazo, the awesome baddie. He is so evil, and not in that delicious way where you want to have your way with him. But no in the evil evil way. He will not think twice of putting a bullet in your brain, he rules with an iron fist, he is cruel, he hits women, but I like him. Yes I do have problems it seems. The thing is that even though he is totally bad, there is still this glimmer of something decent buried way way way back inside of him and he does have one redeeming quality, which the other boss Tower does not seem to have. What can I say, I love a good baddie, and fine I pictured him as hot. But would not go anywhere near him. He is crazy after all.

Conclusion:

This was a great start to this series and it made me want the next book. Sadly I have to wait almost a year for that one. It also did not end in a cliffhanger,  ok sort of not ended. There was an end, there was a maybe, but I could live with it. To wrap this up, great book.

I just do not like it at all. Are they in a forest? Why would they be in a  forest? I also think the cover might have been why I first thought it was a YA book when I saw it. And trust me, it is not.

Review: Alpha - Rachel Vincent

I have read all the previous ones and of course I had to read this last book since I like this series. And I had to know what happens to all of them.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

It was a good book, some ass-kicking, sexual tension between Faythe, Jace, and Mark, the birds showed up again. Faythe learns about responsibility and there are some major conflicts.

What I did not like was that the end felt rather abrupt. Everything was suddenly wrapped up, and for me it did not feel like I got any closure. Especially not about her personal life and that was something I wasn't happy about. And I was not happy about...arghh, I can't tell you, but I was not happy :(

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book

I still recommend this series because it is awesome! Just the kind of UF I like. And I am very sad to see it end.

Are you sitting comfortable? You sure? Yes? Well then it’s time for the third round in the Soul Screamers series. This time it’s even darker, more gruesome, grueling and heartbreaking than before. Get ready for My Soul to Keep!

Kaylee is back after she was grounded for a month by her overprotective father. Things are up to a rocky start when a jock and a good friend of Nash starts behaving weird at a party. It isn’t long before Kaylee and Nash finds out he is addicted to Demon’s Breath. Yes, that would be the actual breath of a hellion/demon. Highly addictive and hallucinating for humans and someone is selling it in balloons. If you read the second book your spidy sense should start tingling. Kaylee and a reluctant Nash start investigating and the digger Kaylee digs the more she starts digging her own grave…erh…the more she won’t like what she finds.

This third book continues along the dark path it started in the first book. Only this book has a surprising, but also heartbreaking twist. Even heroes fall. No, don’t get your panties in a twist, no one dies. Not yet anyway. But you get to read about how far people would go to keep what they have and what they would do for love.

There is a lot of character development in My Soul to Keep. We also see the first rays of change. There isn’t much more I can say without giving some big spoilers away. Let me just say: get your tissues ready and be ready to be surprised!

There is something that started itching me in this installment though. Rachel Vincent won’t let us forget what happened in the previous books. The more this series progresses, the more she’s about repetition of past events. In some points of the story it is even becoming circular narrative. Though in light of the whole story it didn’t bother me as much, but it is becoming more and more noticeable!

Out of all the books, I liked this one least. This because of out of the four it is the darkest. In a way this makes it also the best book. What Rachel Vincent does is show us that the world isn’t perfect and that there is no such thing as the perfect hero, everyone makes mistakes. However, this also puts the story on a slippery slope. Remember I mentioned Supernatural in the previous review? Well in the series there is the theme of the darker the better. The things Sam & Dean are put through the ringer with one evil dead after another. This is what is it starting to look like for the Soul Screamers series. Though there are more silver linings than in Supernatural!

Every time I reach the end of a Soul Screamers book, I want more. It wasn’t any different with this one. Here’s for hoping you enjoy the series as much as I did!

My Soul to Save is the second installment in the Soul Screams series and it is much much darker than the first book. In a way also much better, because now we know who the characters are the all the awkwardness is out of the way. When I started reading the book, I expected it to follow the set pattern of romance between two characters, but instead there is more of a focus on the mystery and the development of characters than there is on the romance. My Soul to Save is both a character-driven and an action-driven story.

After all the troubles in the first book, Kaylee and Nash expect some quiet time and go to rock at the concert of mega popstar Eden. The tickets were oh-so-thoughtfully provided by *grin* Tod. And he has no ulterior motives at.all!! Kaylee and Nash expect a quiet, nice night out. Instead they get a dead popstar and a not so typical Reaper. As it turns out, Eden sold her soul (sounds familiar, Supernatural fans?) to a hellion/demon for fame and fortune. Now that her time is up, her soul belongs to the hellion. The trouble only starts there. When the Reaper mentions to Kaylee, Nash and Tod that she will be back for the soul of the girl who sings the support program, a friend of Tod, the chase is on. What ensue is a dark story of soul selling, friendship, death and betrayal.

As I mentioned this installment is much darker and the end is a prelude to something that will play a big, huge, enormous role in the third installment. While much darker, I loved the second book better than the first. It continues with the theme “you can be the hero but you can’t save everyone.”

There is also much character development. Kaylee comes more into herself. Not more powerful, but she learns to stand on her own and deal. In a way, she becomes more independent, something that will niggle Nash and his hero complex. She is witty and caring to a fault. “Soulless popstar contemplating suicide. Focus Kaylee.”

Tod, did I mention I loved him, also plays an important role in this book and it’s a set up for the third book. Only you only find that out after you read the third installment. I very much liked that isn’t just a side character, but has a full role. He, like a few other characters aren’t just support cast that are there to play a role. Their characters are interwoven in the story.

What I didn’t like so much was the Supernatural soul-selling rip-off. While selling your soul for something big is a theme that goes back to the time of Shakespeare and Goethe, it was a bit too much like Supernatural. I mean people…are you just that stupid? What part of eternal torture don’t you get? Though unlike Supernatural there is an interesting out and something different when they sold their soul.

All in all this book was better than the first book and that was an already spectacular book. So don’t hesitate to get it!!

Some of you may have heard me about my perpetual temp jobs that boring doesn’t even begin to describe in the least. Well if the jobs allows, that is to say I don’t have to talk to whiny people and I don’t have to answer a phone, I listen to audiobooks. It’s something that has kept me sane through many a temp job. Well, at my latest job, reading about whiny people and train delays, Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series came to my attention. Since Rachel Vincent is one of my favorite authors, I took a chance on the series and I haven’t been disappointed at all. Of course, to share the glee I asked B. for a review of the series. So get ready to be awed by the first installment: My Soul to Take.

To start, the series is a Young Adult book and it’s told from Kaylee Kavanagh’s point of view. She’s a High School student who doesn’t know about her heritage, about who she really is and what she can do. As a result she spent a week in the Psych Ward of the local hospital. Poor her. Now let me tell you, in the paranormal world there are some freaky cool abilities to have, but the ability to “scream” for the about-to-be-deceased isn’t one of them. Yup, that’s right. Kaylee is a Bean Sidhe. That would be a Banshee. Yes, the women who scream when someone is about to die.

Only she doesn’t know about it. She only knows that she sometimes sees “shadows” around someone and then gets a panic attack.

That is until one night, when you with her best friend Emma, she meets the uber cutey Nash. When she sees a shadow around a fellow dancer while dancing with the cutey, she starts to panic. Only Nash calms her down and it turns out he has a secret of her own.

The ball gets rolling fast and furious from there on out and you’re on a rollercoaster. The story is not all about Kaylee discovering who she really is. There is also something not quite right with female students dropping like flies.

Kaylee and Nash get help from Tod. Now Tod, he be mine. MINE I tell you! So stay away! He’s a Reaper. Yes, that would be a Grim Reaper, one who harvests souls. But like everyone in this story, Tod also has a secret.

The story is fascinating and well thought through. It’s not just your average teenage romance with a lot of angst. It has depth and a great cast of characters. The characters are not perfect, the have their flaws and they make their mistakes and I found that refreshing. While most stories have a tendency for a happy ending, this ending is happy with a flaw. It’s realistic in that the story shows that not everything always ends with the hero and heroine on top. No worries. No one dies, well no one who isn’t already dead or important!

The only real flaw I found in the story is the theme of predestine or pre-destiny. It’s actually a religious/Protestant term that says everything is preordained. When you’re born, when you die, what you do. It comes back in this story with the “list of the dead” Tod has. He gets a list with names of who dies and when. It’s probably there for the story and the existence of Reapers, but I’m a firm believer of making your own destiny. I don’t think all is ever so easy. Especially not a list of the dead.

Despite this My Soul to Take is a book that is most definitely recommended! It’s quirky, witty and has you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end! My Soul to Take sure made my job a whole lot less boring and caused some funny scenes! (If you ask, I might just tell you!)

I am going to try to make this short, since three reviews will be in this post.

My thoughts:

I did like it better than book 2, which was good too. But here there was just something, the fear about what those idiots would do to her. I did get a bit annoyed by her too, a tiny bit, cos she could just have said that yes I am gonna start having kittens soon and the whole trial could have been over. But that would have killed the plot, but still.

Politics truly play into this book. Malone, one alpha is such an ass, he wants the tabbies at home breeding, and no strays like Marc near the prides. I sure got upset by him and I hope he gets what is coming to him.

Here there is also some strays trying to build their own pride, and going a bit crazy, and the hunt for a young tabby that has come from nowhere.

Tension with Marc too. And we meet another sorts shifter, a bear shifter.

All in all, a really good book that made me wanna pick up the next.

Sometimes playing cat and mouse is no game…

Play? Right. My Pride is under fire from all sides, my father's authority is in question and my lover is in exile. Which means I haven't laid eyes on Marc's gorgeous face in months. And with a new mother and an I-know-everything teenager under my protection, I don't exactly have time to fantasize about ever seeing him again.

Then our long-awaited reunion is ruined by a vicious ambush by strays. Now our group is under attack, Marc is missing and I will need every bit of skill and smarts to keep my family from being torn apart. Forever.

My thoughts:

Here politics still run strong, and Malone is being an ass as always. I can't believe so many alphas are blind to his lust for power. He must be taken down and soon!

Not a lot of Marc since he is missing, and could be dead. But Jace is there and honestly, I like Jace better than Marc now, so want them to be together instead. Jace is just so Jace. I am hoping.

Faythe seems stronger and becomes even more kick-ass, she is maturing, and perhaps she is alpha material after all.

The tabby they rescued wont shift and is dying, but she is a good addition to the books and Faythe does get a softer side by being around her.

A lot of action going on, strays attacking, the hunt for Mark and discovering a big bad plot going on. When I finished I went straight to book 5 cos I just had to read more.

As for my personal life? It's complicated. Choices worth making always are. Ever since my brother's death and my father's impeachment, it's all I can do to prevent more blood from spilling. Now our Pride is under attack by a flight of vicious thunderbirds. And making peace with our new enemies may be the only way to get the best of our old foe.

With the body count rising and treachery everywhere, my instincts tell me to look before I leap. But sometimes a leap of faith is the only real option….

My thoughts:

Sad things has happened, Ethan died *sniff*, and the Pride is no after Malone's blood. I am urging them on. 

Still no attack, cos this book introduces thunderbirds, oh yes big bad-ass shifters that swoop down and attack Faythe's pride. Why, well that you'll see.

Tensions are on high alert between Faythe, Marc and Jace. And I fear I will be so sad by book 6, she is gonna pick Marc, oh please pick Jace, but then he will surely die or something, and I am gonna be so sad.

Politics, so much politics, evil Malone wants to take the tabbies and rule. What a creep, so they are on trouble from many directions in this one.

Faythe keeps getting stronger. I do like her, such a good heroine, even if she makes mistakes.

Finished this one in a day (ok it helped that I had to spend it in bed), but it was really good, and I truly want Alpha now. But sadly I do not have it, so dang.

Okay, so cats don t always land on their feet.

I know that better than most. Since rejoining the Pride, I ve made big decisions and even bigger mistakes: the kind paid for with innocent lives. As the first and only female enforcer, I have plenty to prove to my father, the Pride, and myself. And with murdered toms turning up in our territory, I m working harder than ever, though I always find the energy for a little after-hours recreation with Marc, my partner both on- and off-duty.

But not all of my mistakes are behind me. We re beginning to suspect that the dead are connected to a rash of missing human women and that they can all be laid at my feet--two or four, take your pick. And one horrible indiscretion may yet cost me more than I can bear.

I really liked book 1, I mean really liked it, great UF and I knew I had to read more. The choice was obvious and I got this book.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

I did not love it as much as I liked book 1 but it was still a great book.

* The tension between Marc and Faythe is great, even know when they are together. And then there is Jace, I do like tension

* Great UF has some nice action and this book has this. Someone is killing strippers, and toms. And then a big secret is revealed and that could mean the end of Faythe. The book had me reading fast so I would get to the end and see what happens.

*Love the world. Shifters, cats, yay, and the fact that tabbies are so rare.

*I had heard complaints that this book was not as good as the rest, cos of Faythe, but did not see that. She is still hotheaded, but I do wish she would let Marc into her life.

*It wasn't a full-blown cliffhanger but it was still a cliffhanger at the end and I am so gonna read book 3 soon.

If you are looking for a new urban fantasy series to read then go for this one. It's so good! There is drama, action, and love trouble. If you are a paranormal romance fan then go for this one too, sure not as much romance, but the tension makes up for that.

I'd been warned about Strays , werecats without a Pride, constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female, and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.

This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back , for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I'm no meek kitty. I'll take on whatever and whoever, I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays, 'cause I got claws, and I'm not afraid to use them.

Oh I truly enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, and kept my attention. The only reason it took so long to read it was that I was too busy and that it was really long.

Faythe is a kick-ass heroine, I am not just saying that. No, she has been taught to fight since she was little and has played with the boys on the family farm. That is the other werecat boys that lives with her family since her dad is the alpha for a big area. She has claws, and she can keep her own. What she mostly want is freedom. The ratio female-male cats is huge, and her family would like to see her settled with babies, she is to take over. Instead she ran off to college. But now she must return. Someone is hunting tabbies and she has been targeted.

I was not sure if I would like her because she is so aggressive and more at times, but the more I read the more I understood. So much was hanging over her shoulders. She has a right to some privacy, but still there were some things I did not like. When she laughed at a couple of places, she should have been more terrified, angry or something other than that. It continued, and I mean yes she is strong but that felt wrong.

What about romance then, oh yes I got some of that too. First some sexual tension and then so more sexual tension. Still she did forget about her boyfriend pretty fast when she went on flirting with Jace. And then there was Marc, the guy she left when she went to College. Oh he was all Alpha, and everyone knew it, she knew it too and that is part of the problem. I could not wait to see sparks fly again there. I do wonder how that will play out.

The latter part of the book was so intense, it kept me on the edge of my seat and I just wanted to turn the pages faster and faster. It gets pretty terrifying and there is a lot of violence and horror.

Sure this book was very long, but it was needed. You had to see it all before the end can come. And those very intense long pages went pretty fast since I had to know what happened, at that second.

This was a great start to a series, and I will read more. If the other books are as good then I am in for an awesome ride. And hey I have always like cats.
