Warrior-mage Indris grows weary in his failed attempts to thwart the political machinations of Corajidin, and faces the possibility of imprisonment upon his return to his homeland. Moreover, Indris’s desire for Corajidin’s daughter, Mari, is strong. Can he choose between his duty and his desire…and at what cost?

Left alienated from her House, Mari is torn between the opposing forces of her family and her country—especially now that she’s been offered the position of Knight-Colonel of the Feyassin, the elite royal guards whose legacy reaches back to the days of the Awakened Empire. As the tensions rise, she must decide if her future is with Indris, with her family, or in a direction not yet foreseen.

As he awaits trial for his crimes, Corajidin confronts the good and evil within himself. Does he seek redemption for his cruel deeds, or does he indebt himself further to the enigmatic forces that have promised him success, and granted him a reprieve from death? What is more important: his ambition, regaining the love stolen from him, or his soul?

My thoughts:
I am a bit torn when it comes to this review. I struggled with the book, it did not keep my attention. For that it was only ok. BUT the world building is just so rich. Mythology, politics, culture, fighting, everything is just so interesting. I do love the world. The story stagnated though.

Idris is still being good. Mari is still thinking her dad is bad, but not doing anything about it. Corajidin is still being bad and wanting to take over everything. The leaders are still being idiots and should have Corajidin executed, but money can buy anything and everyone.

Ok lots happened, and nothing happened. People talked, thought about things, went back and forth. Accused each other of things they had not done. Fought. And then witches came. The end.

Something was missing, something that made me enthralled with book 1 (even if if it took two turns to finish it). But here I never became that enthralled, frankly I felt disappointed.

Conclusion:
So the book was ok, the world was good. The world saves the rating, deserving? Maybe not. As it did not make me want to read more. A rating of the heart, not the mind.

Edit:
1 day later. I changed my mind. Yes the world was good, but the mindless reading I did, no. Have to rate it just ok.

The Winter Long - Seanan McGuire

Toby thought she understood her own past; she thought she knew the score.

She was wrong.
It's time to learn the truth.

My thoughts:
I do love Toby. That's all.

But must I say more?! This is book 8, I am sure I have said it all. Cried poor Toby! Talked about how hot Tybalt is. Talked about how cool the world is. Talked again about poor Toby, and just talked in general about how awesome it is.

Here again I thirst for answers! I need them, I need them now. Sure we learn who big bad was. But what I want to know is, let's see, her grandmother is. There is something strange there. First we learn about her mother, her grandfather, well now I want more. I guess it will come.

So, what can I say without spoiling things? Toby is in danger as always. She kicks ass as always. She learns new truths. The end. Awesome.

Conclusion:
Read it in an evening. For once you start you can't stop.

Author Interview and giveaway: Samantha Grace

Today I interview author Samantha Grace. Welcome!

1. Tell me about yourself.
My husband and I have been married for 18 years and recently had our anniversary. We have two children—a 16-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter—and two pets (dog & cat). I have a very funny family and we laugh and joke a lot. I decided to follow my dream of becoming a writer six years ago. It was the only thing on my bucket list that I would have truly regretted never accomplishing. Now I’m a multi-published author! It blows my mind sometimes, but in a good way.

2. Tell us what In Bed with a Rogue is about?
“In Bed with a Rogue” is about two people who wouldn’t normally associate but come together for the betterment of their families. Helena must maintain a sterling reputation if she has any hope of making a better life for her sisters once she finds them, and an association with the roguish Sebastian Thorne is the last thing she needs. Nevertheless, she can’t ignore his cries for help when he is attacked by footpads outside a tavern in Whitechapel—a dangerous part of London where she is searching for her sister Lavinia who is rumored to be working in a brothel. When her compassion wins out over good sense and she rescues Lord Thorne, her life becomes intertwined with his. She thinks Sebastian is going to blackmail her, but in reality, he sees an opportunity to help each other. He will search the brothels for her if she will sponsor his sister’s reentry into Society. Helena and Sebastian form an alliance that soon seems to be headed toward a more permanent partnership, as long as no one learns Helena’s secret.

3.  Sebastian got jilted in book 1, has this changed him?
That’s a good question. I think it makes him reevaluate life and creates a short-lived crisis in his confidence. Ever since Sebastian was 16-years-old, he’s had ladies propositioning him. He’s handsome and charming, and he saw an opportunity to use his strengths to help his sister improve her standing in Society in “One Rogue Too Many”. If he had been able to marry Lady Gabrielle, a duke’s daughter/sister, Eve’s reentry into Society would have been a sure thing. When his plan failed, he felt he let down his sister and mother, and he loves them a great deal. He doesn’t wallow for long, however. He has always been a fighter and resilient, so he continues forward with his head held high. He has two goals that are very important to him: make life better for his sister and mother, and continue his father’s work with homeless soldiers, which his father couldn’t complete due to him suffering from PTSD.

4. Is it more fun to write about a widow like Helena, or someone not married?
It depends on the heroine. Of course, I love every one of them, but some have a little sassier personalities, like Lady Gabrielle and Lady Vivian. I had fun writing about both ladies. Helena, however, I really admired. She has spunk, but it was a more mature version. She’s been through a lot in her lifetime, too. I do love the freedom widows have that debutantes don’t. It allows for different situations, because Helena doesn’t have anyone to answer to. Even though she was married and is not a virgin, she still has an innocence about her. I like that Sebastian helps her see sexual relations can be pleasurable and playful and bring a couple closer together, and he begins to see sex as a way of expressing love and devotion.

5.  What makes these two so perfect for each other?
Their values are the same. They love their families and will do anything to make their lives better. Their backgrounds aren’t that far apart either. Helena is a blacksmith’s daughter and Sebastian’s father was an officer in the military. Sebastian’s father only became nobility because the King granted him a barony for his service in the Irish Rebellions. Helena is also a challenge for Sebastian, and he is not one to give-up. I think another man probably would have become discouraged, but he is determined and patient, which helps him get the girl.

6.  What are you working on right now?
I recently turned in the third book in my Rival Rogues series, “A Good Rogue is Hard to Find.” I’m happy about completing a story for Eve Thorne, Sebastian’s sister, and excited about where the series is headed next. I’m expecting a chance to write a few more action scenes, which I love.

Thank you to Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell for inviting me to be here today. I’m looking forward to chatting with everyone. I’m curious about readers’ preferences. Would you rather read about a widow or a debutante in a historical romance?

To connect with Samantha…

Historical romance author Samantha Grace discovered the appeal of a great love story when she was just a young girl, thanks to Disney's Robin Hood. She didn't care that Robin Hood and Maid Marian were cartoon animals. It was her first happily-ever-after experience and she didn't want the warm fuzzies to end. Now Samantha enjoys creating her own happy-endings for characters that spring from her imagination. Publisher's Weekly describes her stories as "fresh and romantic" with subtle humor and charm. Samantha describes romance writing as the best job ever.

Author Interview And Giveaway: Rosanne Bittner

Today I interview Rosanne Bittner. Welcome!

Hello to everyone at Book Gurl of Mur-Y-Castell!  I appreciate being asked to visit your blog and hope you will visit mine at www.rosannebittner.blogspot.com

1. Tell me about yourself.
I have been writing since 1979 and sold my first book in 1982.  That book turned into a 7-book series called SAVAGE DESTINY.  Now my 59th book, DESPERATE HEARTS (from Sourcebooks) is being published this month, and many of my backlist titles are now available again in print and as e-books.  Just check my web site for a list of all my titles and a one-click option for ordering – or visit Amazon.com.  I am a member of many historical societies, an officer in our local Coloma Lioness Club (a charity organization), Women Writing the West, Western Writers of America, Romance Writers of American and our local chapter of RWA. Next July Sourcebooks will publish DO NOT FORSAKE ME, a sequel to OUTLAW HEARTS and my 60th book.  I love this story and I know you will, too.  And OUTLAW HEARTS will be reissued in print and as an e-book one month before its sequel.

2. Tell us in a few words what Desperate Hearts is about?
DESPERATE HEARTS is the story of a Montana vigilante who falls in love with a young woman who arrives in the little gold town of Alder, Montana alone, and with no good explanation for why she’s there.  It’s an action-packed western romance and a wonderful love story.  You will love the read!

3.  I am going to go silly now ;) If I met Mitch at a bar, how would he try to charm me?
If you met hero, Mitch Brady, at a bar, he would charm you with his very handsome smile and you would immediately sense that this man has a great respect for all women.  And just looking at his beautiful physique would turn you to soft butter.

4. And how would Elizabeth turn someone down?
You asked how Elizabeth would turn someone down … well, she does turn Mitch down, several times, not because she’s not attracted to him, but because she’s afraid to trust him.  For reasons you will learn, she doesn’t trust any man, and because she is secretly running from the law, she is doubly careful and wary around Mitch, who is a vigilante.

5.  What makes these two so perfect for each other?
Mitch and Elizabeth are perfect for each other because each has experienced the loss of a mother in a tragic way – and each is virtually alone against the world.

6.  What are you working on right now?
You asked what I am working on now:  Well, I just finished and turned in DO NOT FORSAKE ME, so I’m sure that soon I’ll be working with my editor on edits for that book.  In the meantime I am already busy on my next project, which will be my first contemporary romance.  This book breaks a lot of rules when it comes to what genre to place it in because it involves so many different areas of interest, from religion to hot sex to an old-fashioned Indian romance, to suspense, to violence.  It’s a love story beyond measure, but the characters are not ordinary, and the way they meet in the very first chapter is really exciting and tense.  I have a fantastic title for the book but for now it’s a secret!

Thank you for taking time to read my post.  I hope you will visit my web site at www.rosannebittner.com and find out about all my books and how you can order them from my site with one click.  I hope you enjoy DESPERATE HEARTS and will watch for OUTLAW HEARTS and its sequel DO NOT FORSAKE ME next summer!

The last thing she wants is attention, but when her stagecoach is attacked, she suddenly finds herself under the fierce protection of one of Montana’s famed vigilantes…whether she likes it or not.
Lawman Mitch Brady is sworn to uphold justice. He’s never met a man he’s feared, and he’s never met a woman more desperately in need of his help. Something’s shaken the secretive Elizabeth, but as he gets to know the beautiful city belle, he finds the only thing he wants more than her safety…is her trust. Elizabeth longs to give herself to Mitch, but when her past finally catches up with her, can she truly trust her life to the vigilante who’s stolen her heart?
