Series: Chicagoland Vampires 1
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 341
Published: 2010
Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker—and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.
Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan "Lord o’ the Manor" Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude—and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.
My thoughts:
Yes I have finally tried this series. I have heard a lot of about it and how Team Ethan is the best and how something that happened in the last book was shocking (oh and I actually know what since I am a very bad girl and asked someone.)

Back to the beginning. Merit does not want to be a vampire but she was saved from a certain death and this was the only way to survive. Therefore she has certain attitude problems towards her new Master Ethan, oh yes I love how she stands up to him and refuses to serve him hand and foot. I liked her at once, the same goes for her housemate Mallory, her new sparring buddy Catcher who is so cool and Morgan (Team Morgan! Please do not become a creep or evil cos I like him). Ethan then, sorry all, but he was an ass. Yes I know some like jerks but he was not for me. I saw the attraction, I am not blind, but I did not fall for him. But he was not a I wanna kick your ass jerk, he was more rolling my eyes jerk. And if he turns around then I am going to fall as hard as the rest of you.
The world was good. Vampires came out 8 months or so, but the rest of the paranormals have not. Everything is pretty civilized on the surface, even if I am sure we will see the dirt at the bottom when the series continues. A simple world with much to offer. And a good story about Merit trying to find her new vampire self and the hunt for a serial killer, the same that attacked her.
Conclusion:
I liked it at once. I did not have to read far before I knew that I did not want to put this book down. I recommend it and I want to read book 2. Ok I need to read book 2. I want more.

ok I guess
Ok, the US cover wasn't great, but I think it's better than that.
ReplyDeleteOhhh I'm still very intrigued by this series. But my reluctance to buy much Uf/pnr right now is still not over.
ReplyDeleteEven tho' I'm sure it would be good.
I'm silly I know.
"...I want to read book 2. Okay I need to read book 2." Hehe... glad you liked the book, and can't wat to find out what you think of the next!
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Ethan does come off as quite a cad in this book. Certainly not completely worthy of Merit's attentions. A bit too sure of himself, that one. :o)
Glad you liked the book. I am definitely Team Ethan and Merit is one of my favorite heroines. Good review.
ReplyDeleteOoh, sounds fun! Added this one to my TBR!
ReplyDeleteWooohooo! You finally read it! I was both frustrated and intruiged by this relationship. i wanted to similtaneously kiss and kick Ethan!
ReplyDeleteI am so definitely NOT team Ethan as my review might tell you all but no, I haven't read the last part yet and I hold my horses. I am glad you liked it (well, I knew you would like it) as the series is not entirely without merits ;)
ReplyDelete@Chris
ReplyDeleteI agree with that. With the US cover, well it gave me the wrong idea, I thought she was 20 and entering a house with party vamps or something. Weird I know
@Susi
Oh, how come? Since UF kicks ass ;=) But I am that with PNR these days
@Alisha
I would sure have liked to slapped him. The nerve on that guy *shakes head*
I still haven't taken the plunge into this series. I think I will wait until i have several books at once so I can read them all very quickly.
ReplyDeleteYes, you are a very bad girl. ;)
@AsianCocoa
ReplyDeleteShe was great :D And we will see how things evolves for me
@Audra
I am glad that I finally got to read it
@Lis
Lol, I can understand that. Kick and kiss, oh yes ;) And yay for finally reading and falling for it too :D
@Ana
It did suit me ;) But then our taste in books sure seems to be different
@Melissa
ReplyDeleteI know, I mean reading out of order is one thing but getting spoilers from a book way ahead, shame on me ;)
I am one of those who has not tried this series --- haven't been "turned" so to speak. But it sounds like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked it! This is one of my fave vamp series. Love Ethan but sometimes he makes me nuts :)
ReplyDeleteyeah the cover's not that great
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing about this serie and been curious of it. Good to hear you liked it! There's hoping library has it...
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those examples of books that everyone except me seems to love. I just don't understand the purpose of having vampires in your books if you're going to make them just like humans. Plus the characters annoyed me. But that's just me.
ReplyDeleteAnother author I've heard alot about but haven't had a chance to read. This one really sounds like a good book.
ReplyDeleteI hear Chloe Neill is awesome, so I'll take your word on this - I want to read it! Great review :)
ReplyDeleteThis series has been on my TBR list forever! Too many books, too little time! Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI have heard so much about this series that I am curious about it as well as afraid to be disappointed. Sounds like a fun series though!
ReplyDeleteI like this series as well but I'm still a couple books behind the latest release - Hard Bitten is on my TBR pile though (how bored are you of hearing me say that?!).
ReplyDeleteI have agree, I'm not a big fan of Ethan but he does kinda grow on me...
Really like her YA series and will read Chloe's adult series soon.
ReplyDelete@Steph
ReplyDeleteLol, then you sure need to be turned. It was so much fun to read
@Patti
Oh that Ethan, I sure hope he wont turn my head around
@Carrie
Still, I do like it better than the other one
@Elysium
I made the library get it :D Haha, love my library!
@Simcha
ReplyDeleteLol, I am sure you are not alone, and I liked that they were more human. And not too vamp like.
@Yvonne
You really should try this series and see what you think
@Melissa
Yes please do :D I really enjoyed this book
@Jenny
ReplyDeleteThat I do understand ;)
I am very glad I finally got to try this book
@Misha
That is sure a fear I always have. But you will never know unless you try it
@Mel
I feared as much ;) That pompous little ass. And I sure know about being a book, or several behind
@Jenny
I liked this series even more :D
This is another series I want to try out. Oh, so many of these. So glad to see you enjoyed it. :)
ReplyDeleteHmmmm...why am I not surprised that you were a bad girl and found out what happened?? LOL!!...this looks good!
ReplyDelete@Melissa
ReplyDeleteI just hope I will enjoy book 2 too, I have heard that it's a bit meh
@Staci
I blame everyone for being so o_O at the end of that book. I had to know ;)
Because I heard so much praise for this author I tried her work. Unfortunately for me, I think I picked her one book which was the worst in her entire writing career! I read Firespell. The author's voice is very compelling but the plot is annoying. Not to mention weak. Such that it put me off this author totally, no matter how good her story telling skills are. However, Firespell is a YA book. Reading from your review, I think it might just be the YA series that was not good? Maybe her adult books are not annoying like Firespell was... Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete@Cherry
ReplyDeleteHow to help you..well I have read Firespell, and even if I didn't think it was as horrid as you felt it was. It was ok and it was YA. But this book was so much better, so very much better :) That is all I can say in the end
I've read the first book too and loved it. No idea why I haven't picked up subsequent series installments... Will remedy that very soon!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you know the ending to book 3!! That being said, you'll still be shocked-I was and I knew something was going to happen-just didn't know what.
ReplyDeleteThis series is fun because all the books are fast reads, and the characters become your friends as well. Great review, and I'm glad you liked this one, even if you are Team Morgan. :)
@VFG
ReplyDeleteI do hear that the 2nd might not be as good. Well some feel that, but still gotta read it :D
@Bucky
I know right, I am horrid! Shame on me, but I was SO curious. I had to know, and will still be so shocked cos I refuse to believe it could happen
I've been meaning to start this series forever - must squeeze it in to my schedule!
ReplyDeleteShelleyrae @ Book'd Out
@Shelleyrae
ReplyDeleteI recommend it highly, do give it time :)
I'm not a big fan of the cover...there's just something wrong with it. :-( However, I have heard several people talking about this series and how I really need to try it out. So I'm happy that you enjoyed it so much. I really do have a lot of series that I need to start! :-(
ReplyDelete@Dea
ReplyDeleteTell em about it, so so many. But some are worth a try. Hopefully I will review book 2 this year and you will see what I think
