Review: Bloodfever - Karen Marie Moning

Series: Fever #2
Genre: Urban Fantasy/paranormal romance
Published: Oct 13, 2011 (2007)

MacKayla Lane's ordinary life underwent a complete makeover when she landed on Ireland's shores and was plunged into a world of deadly sorcery and ancient secrets. In her fight to stay alive, Mac must find the Sinsar Dubh-a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over both the worlds of the Fae and of Man. Pursued by Fae assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she cannot trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and irresistible men: V'lane, the insatiable Fae who can turn sensual arousal into an obsession for any woman, and the ever-inscrutable Jericho Barrons, a man as alluring as he is mysterious. For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

My thoughts:
I can't say that a lot happened in this book, well ok things happened, but not in the aspect that we got to know any big secrets. Moning is holding on to those for sure, but then there are more books in this series.

I liked Mac more in this one, she was starting to hold her own. But then she did go from sunloving beach girl to trying to find her sister's killer. And I do like that she has not let go of it completely either. The love for sun and colors is still there.

Barrons then, I actually did not think he was that big an ass this time around. I do not know, he just has his own agenda and goes for that. He does try to protect her, sure the chemistry I can't see, but yes I kind of...like, no, approve of him.

The OOP being hunted here is an amulet. And she will also deal with the repercussions from the last book. There are people who are not happy, and the bad guy, yes a very gross bad guy. The Unseelie Fae are also shown a lot and there is this scary vibe over it all. You really feel how Dublin is falling deeper into darkness.

What did I think then, I do not trust those Fae seers, they have their goal and no I can'r trust them. V'Lane is his usual death by sex self (a little toned done though) and I sure do not trust him. That leaves Barrons and his secrets that I just want!

It is those secrets that make me want more. So it was a good thing that Moning leaves a tiny clue that is really nothing. She makes me want more.

And again I feel that this book is not straight up UF, sure there is really no romance around but I will still call it UPR. Because there is really not that much ass-kicking around either. It is an interesting mix all together.

Conclusion:
It is a Dublin I would not want to visit, but a Dublin that is great to read about. Dark, twisted, scary and no idea of whom to trust.

  1. I think the second book was an interesting go-between; real action starts in the third one but some things you wouldn't understand if you haven't read the second part. Mysteries and cliffies - yeah, be prepared for more.

  4. You don't really get many answers until the last book.

  5. Karen is definitely a master at making you want more isn't she? I don't think I've ever had a list of questions for a book series as long as the one I had for these books. When you get one tiny question answered, 20 new huge ones pop up:) Glad Barrons worked a little better for you in this one!

  6. You really don't get any answers till the last book as Amanda said. It was an overall pretty decent series.....the end will make you either like it or hate it. Seriously I have seen both POVs at the end :)

  7. I have the first one of these and I can't wait to read it.

  8. This series definitely frustrated me with all the secrets and mystery, but I guess it was a way to keep me reading, eh.

Barrons alternates in each books from kind of an ass to full blown asshat! LOL

  9. So, will you read the rest? I have only read the first book so far, and am not really in a hurry to read it all.
I did absolutely love her Highlander series though. Give me a McKeltar anyday!

  13. "but yes I kind of...like, no, approve of him" - Safe to say you're having no strong feelings for Barrons, right? I like the idea of the million-year-old book of black magic.

  14. Amanda
She sure keeps her answers a secret long then

    Jenny
Lol, so true. For every tiny answer she just pours more questions over us. SHe is truly evil, but then she is a good author. Because she knows how she will get us to read more.

    Felicia
Oh NO! Hate or like....I do fear it will be hate with me if some hate it

    Vivienne

  17. Each book builds on the previous one and gets better! I was glad to have all the books on hand with her cliffhangers!

  18. Hmm, not sure this is a series I need to immediately get my hands on but it sounds interesting.

  19. Don't worry, Barrons will piss you off again quite soon. And yet... you still want more of him. *sigh*

    Oh yes, keep reading!!

  20. I think the next book was the one that annoyed me so much with its cliffhanger.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not sure about this one. I really hate cliffhangers. But I'm interested in this world.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh there will be cliffhangers galore, one really massive one among them; if you really hate them get the whole series at once (like zusammen - alles klar?). You might need every single book asap.

Barrons never gets past his assiness (if such a word exist) even when he really tries...but he has other assets.

  23. mmmm, maybe! I heard great things about her writing, but I'm not sure about this book. I do like kick-ass moments in a book.

  24. I need to start this series! I have Darkfever on my tbr pile so I will catch up with you soon! :)

    Amused
Maybe one of these days...perhaps I can tempt you further.

    Melissa
LOL. Oh that Barrons, so book 3 is the book where I want to rip his head of then? I must wait and see

    Chris
Eeeeeeeek. I do fear cliffies more than anything else

    ReplyDelete
  26. Alexis
No cliffie in this one at least

    AnA
Zusammen? Ich verstehe. Ich glaube das ist ist eine gut idee.
But you know me, I will not do it cos I am a rebel!

    Other assets...ok..

    Nina
Not so many kick-ass ones here, but they will come. She has to build up some momento first

    Mel
I hope you get to it soon :D

  27. Dark, twisted, scary Dublin does sound interesting. Sounds like a worthwhile series.

  28. I've read this book ages ago and stopped reading the series with this book... I got disappointed. But Moning's story telling quality is still superb!

    ReplyDelete
  29. You approve of Barrons. I think that is very well put. Can't wait until you read book 3. Then book 4. ZOMG! Then book 5!!!!!

  30. Naida
It was interesting, and scary too, I sure do not want to visit

    Carrie
    It sure it

    Cherry
Oh, too bad to hear :/ I would not say this one put me off the rest.

    Julie
OMG!!!! I hear so many omgs there so I get really really really worried

  31. I'm actually reading this series, though I'm not sure why b/c I'm not really enjoying them. I don't particularly like the characters, which is a large part of the problem. Barrons is a jerk and it annoys me that Mac allows him to push her around. She does have other options after all. But I do appreciate that she doesn't fall in love with Barrons (at least hasn't yet) and doesn't spend the whole time thinking lustful thoughts about him, which is what happens in every other UF book. Perhaps that's why I keep reading these books.

  32. Interesting. And another author I've not got the pleasure of reading, BUT would like to one day. Thanks for the great review.

  33. Simcha
He is a jerk, such a jerk! But at least he was a tiny bit better in this book. And yes at least she is not lusting that much after him

    Melissa
They tend to pile up :)

  34. I'm glad you're still reading these. The first book left me lacking and I wasn't sure about moving to the second book but this one was a bit better and they just got better from there. I really did enjoy this series and I hope you continue to enjoy them. :-D

I shall read book 3 in November and surely woe the fact that I do not have book 4 ready ;)
