The shadow of what was lost - James Islington

It has been twenty years since the god-like Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them - the Gifted - are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion's Four Tenets, vastly limiting their powers.

As a Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian's wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is...

And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir.

MY thoughts:
I enjoyed this story, but at the end I felt like I could take it or leave it. I felt that was strange when I thought it was good and when I would want to know what happened. I was left thinking that if someone gave it to me, then sure, yes I would read it. If the library had then yes I would read it. But buy..eh, I put it on my maybe list. And there is a lot to get before that.

So what was it?
Characters! I reached this conclusion after thinking long and hard about it. I did not love anyone, wanted to be friends with anyone and fall in love with anyone. I did not hate anyone either. At the end I then felt like sure I wanted to know what happened, but did I care?

Still a good book. Just, characters seem to be lacking for me.

I did get a WOT vibe and that sure fell into place when they went into a cursed city. Made me want to re-read WOT instead.

As for the story. There is an amnesiac guy who seemed sort of interesting. A girl who was boring. A guy who followed and the man character that was rather Bland. You see my point.

And a country that is on the brink of war and---wait, if they went north did that mean the country above this one just fell and no one talked about it?
Anyway baddies are coming.
People with magic are treated as dirt.

That was it. Good, but lacking.

  1. Sorry this one was just okay for you and it is not fun when a character is boring.

  2. You need to connect with characters in some way in order to fully get attached.

  8. That's a long book to end up being lackluster. I've been curious about it, but not likely to pick it up right now

  9. I know what you mean by take it or leave it. I had a good time with this book too, but so far I have not been motivated to pick up the sequel. I wouldn't mind continuing one day, but right now there's just a lot more I would rather read first.

  11. Sorry this one wasn't better. Sometimes I wonder if it is better to read a book that incites hatred for it than one that is just meh. At least hatred means it was interesting enough to make you passionate about it.
