Review: Linger - Maggie Stiefvater

Grace and Sam must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping dangerous secrets. For Sam, it means grappling with his werewolf past ...and figuring out a way to survive the future.

But just when they manage to find happiness, Grace finds herself changing in ways she could never have expected...

An old review that has been left hanging.

My thoughts:
I have no idea what happened. I could never get into the book. The first 1 was so good, I loved the style. Here, well here the style failed for me. I got annoyed at the feeling that I stood at the outside looking in. I never got warm, I never felt like I was there. I did not like the constant POV changes, 4 were too many in a book like this.

I was never invested in the story, I never cared about these two, or Isabel and Cole. But most of all nothing at all happened. It was a long fever dream where most of the time was spent "oh I love you, I miss you" etc etc. If someone would ask me what happened I would say that Grace and Sam thought about each other, Cole was dealing with his change and Grace's parents got mad, cos that was it (edit: and if you would ask me now, months later I would say that I can't remember anything..except for a rockstar.)

Conclusion:
It was still ok, it was just not.. interesting.

  1. I remember liking this even more than the first novel in the series - I am happy that there are only 3 books in this series because I feel like some series just go on and on and the story starts to lack.

    1. So true, some series I just want to stop, cos I get so sad when they start to suck :/ Which is why trilogies are so good

  2. I was actually halfway into this book when I stopped... that was last year...

  3. I've read different reviews, good and bad, of Maggie Stiefvater books. I would like to try one but now I am even more sure I won't like it.

  4. Oh noes! I have to admit I like Maggie's style. It's melancholic and poetic, but yes, you're right it's slow plot wise, not much happens. :)

  5. I hope it's just a case of sophomore slump and the series picks back up for you.

    1. It does make me put book 3 further down the pile :/

  6. This was not the series for me either. I just couldn't quite get involved with Sam or Grace, and I never made it past book 1 despite how much everyone else seemed to love it. *sigh* I did adore THE SCORPIO RACES though, I thought that one was brilliant, and I can't wait to read THE RAVEN BOYS:)

    1. Hm..maybe I would go for those books more. Cos let's face it, most of the time YA pnr/UF falls flat for me. I always have the same old issues

  7. I have been wanting to start this series for a long time. I'm sorry the second book didn't live up to expectations for you.

  10. I've not read any Stiefvater, but I admit that the beauty of the covers alone makes me want to buy all her boks! Sad it wasn't that great.

    1. It was just sadly boring and sometimes there are too many POVS

  11. Just one of those books that didn't work, alas...

  12. I think that an author has to be careful with POV changes. Sometimes it works to add insight, but it can go wrong very quickly. I also have to agree, sometimes these series just go on too damn long. It is almost like they keep going until they have nothing else to deliver and no one is paying attention any longer. I say quit while your ahead and keep readers buzzing. Thank you for your review.

    1. Oh yes do quit while you are ahead. When they go on and on, well I just start to worry cos I know it will all go south in the end.

In fantasy I can handle POV changes. But here I think (since it was too long ago) I felt like why do we have to read about those other two? Who cares

  13. I loved the first book, liked the second and hated the third. It's really sad how wrong this series went.

  15. LOL thanks for the laugh and the honesty. Most of the YA books i pick seem the way this one is.

    1. Sad but true. Way too few YA books wow me, most just annoy me

  16. Book 1 lost me after just a few chapters. I thought the writing and the story were ridiculous. What kind of kid goes outside in the snow and lies down with a bunch of wolves? Considering my feelings about this book I was shocked by how much I enjoyed The Scorpio Races.

    1. Lol, tell me about it! I did get over it, but it was mostly cos I liked her writing, but then it went south.

      Hm..Maybe I should try it

  17. I've heard that a lot of people didn't love the last book Forever but I haven't heard much about Linger.
I still need to read Shiver. I've kind of avoided it because of all the hype. I usually don't love things as much as everyone else. Especially in YA

    1. Hype can be evil, I always fear hype cos it's always a letdown..well mostly. But I do fear the last one now as this one was just so very very meh

  19. I just finished the audio of Linger and I ended up enjoying it. At first I did not like Cole but by the end he was my favorite. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this as much if I hadn't done the audio. I will post my review soon.

  21. "Outside looking in" - that's not a good sign for a book which is supposed to bring you in and put you in the middle of everything.

  22. Sorry this sequel didn't work for you :( I personally loved Cole's narration so his addition was great for me!

  25. Gah. I'm sorry this was a flop. I was hoping it was good because of the whole werewolf thing. I have a thing for those shapeshifters. lol
