Review: Undead and Unwed - MaryJanice Davidson

Series: Undead #1
Genre: Paranormal romance (humour)
Pages: 288 (PB)
Published: 2004
Publisher: Berkley
Source: My own

Waking up in a tacky coffin, and wearing off-brand shoes, Betsy Taylor can't believe the horrible turn her life has taken–then she discovers she's a vampire. Soon, Betsy becomes a participant in a power struggle between the forces of darkness. With only her friend Jessica and the hunky vampire Sinclair to help her, this new "Queen of Vampires" will have a tough time getting her afterlife straight.

My thoughts:
Now this was light humorous paranormal romance and I do like that. Betsy did not take herself seriously and I enjoyed that. But then the cover does give it all away, light and fun.

Betsy is not normal kind of heroine, she loves shoes, loves loves them! And of course is should be designer shoes. She is funny, snarky, sweet and nice. Of course I had to like Betsy, especially when she brings out the snark. She also got sidekicks who are just perfect for her. The hero, well we know it from the first time she sets her eyes on him. Sink Lair, and I got Ethan vibes. Especially from one of the first times she sees him around. Nah, I did not care for him. He is full of himself and even if he changes his ways...ok I can't make a prophecy, I might actually like him then. But the first impression is just the same that she got, jerk.

The story is all about her waking up from the dead, coming to terms with that, meeting vamps, wondering why they call her queen and all in a lighthearted fashion.

Did I fall for it as much as my friend who read it first did? No, but I enjoyed it none the less. And since she liked it so much that she bought more,...yes I will read more then too.

Conclusion:
Fluffy and fun.

Cover
Cute

  1. It has been years since I read this series, and I agree, the first 6 or so are fun. So, keep on reading, and Sink Lair, will he change? not telling ;)

  2. Somehow I feel like passing this one. I do like shoes insanely and I appreciate a sense of humour but I am not persuaded by a posh wanna-be vampire queen and her arrogant partner, nuh-huh.

  3. Interesting that my post today is also about the undead. Yours sounds like it wouldn't give me the nightmares mine did.

  4. I thought it was fun too :) I have only read 3 of them but they were all funny!

  6. I listened to one book in this series and thought it was cute, but I didn't love it enough to seek out more.

  7. I did like the first few in this series, but then I got tired of them and stopped - they started to feel awfully repetitive. I can't remember which one CursingMama called "Undead and Unreadable"...

  8. I read this series, I liked it. Specially the first books, they were fun. But I admit the last book left me unhappy, so I'm not sure I'll continue reading it.

  15. I read this series a while back and really enjoyed them. They're just want you said, fun books:) The series deteriorated a bit for me after I think book 5 or 6, I can't remember, and I haven't picked up the later books. The first ones I had fun with though:)

You are not the first to say it so it does not bode well...I will read the next two since my friend got them. And perhaps more if I enjoy them, but yes, does not look well

  17. I started with this series and found fun at first. It does get a little weighed down by it's own mythology after a few books though...the first few were enjoyable though!

  21. I tried listening to this first book on audio once but it couldn't capture my interest. Perhaps it was the narrator and I should give the paperback copy a try instead?

  22. I thought this one was cute too!!

Narrators can be tricky, that it why i tend to avoid audio cos some are just bad. But what to say, it was light and fun, not perfect though

    Staci
    It sure was :)

  25. My mother-in-law had passed her copy of this book to me a while ago and I had read it and enjoyed it, but for some reason I haven't followed up with any of the other books in the series. Perhaps if you review them I'll be inspired to give them a try as well.

  28. I like fluff, fun and snark. I had never heard of this series before. I'll grab it if I see it. I really hate it when I don't like the hero but snarky heroines are too fun to pass up.

  29. Oh, this one sounds like fun! I'm definitely adding it to my TBR list. I'm glad you did enjoy it and I'm happy that you'll try out more from this series. I like light and fluffy reads every once in a while. :-D
